MLB Daily Notes - September 26th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
I’m in the writing mood this morning, but I still am at a loss for what to write about. Producer Lee brought up in our Slack group that Jose Ramirez is flirting with a 40-40 season, and that’s a bit surprising to hear. In these days of Aaron Judge scraping 60 homers, Shohei Ohtani’s 50-50, and all of these shiny new toys like Bobby Witt Jr., Gunnar Henderson, and Corbin Carroll, J-Ram has been been taken for granted. I’m not saying he’s been underrated or overlooked, but nobody has been gassing him up in the same way as these other guys. That’s what consistency will get you. We just come to expect 30-30 for J-Ram.
Jose Ramirez by Year
2016: 11 HR, 22 SB, .312 AVG
2017: 29 HR, 17 SB, .318 AVG
2018: 39 HR, 34 SB, .270 AVG
2019: 23 HR, 24 SB, .255 AVG
2021: 36 HR, 27 SB, .266 AVG
2022: 29 HR, 20 SB, .280 AVG
2023: 24 HR, 28 SB, .282 AVG
2024: 38 HR, 40 SB, .275 AVG
What a career, and this guy is still only 32. He’s younger than me. That lost 2020 season is a real pain in the ass to us data guys, by the way. I never know if I should include the stats when I do things like that or write them down but put an asterisk or something. The year is the reason that my MLB & MiLB Stats Dashboard does not go further back than 2021. Think of all of the minor league guys that had their careers ruined by that canceled season. Someone entering their age-24 minor league season with one last chance to prove it and get to the Majors, and then they have to sit for a year - and they come out on the other end flirting with being 26 and are much less of a priority to their organizations.
It could also be interesting to study the 2018 & 2019 MLB draft and see if those two classes end up having below-average success or below-average promotion rates. To get drafted and then immediately miss an entire season must have been tough. Although, checking the 2019 top-20 makes you not feel so worried about that:
2019 Draft:
1. Adley Rutschman
2. Bobby Witt Jr.
3. Andrew Vaughn
4. JJ Bleday
5. Riley Greene
6. CJ Abrams
7. Nick Lodolo
8. Josh Jung
9. Shea Langeliers
10. Hunter Bishop
11. Alek Manoah
12. Brett Baty
13. Keoni Cavaco
14. Bryson Stott
15. Will Wilson
16. Corbin Carroll
17. Jackson Rutledge
18. Quinn Priester
19. Zach Thompson
20. George Kirby
That’s a solid handful of All Stars already, and only 6-8 guys that haven’t had real success in the Majors to this point. So that’s good.
Your streamer options today:
David Festa vs. MIA
Michael Wacha vs. WSH
Walker Buehler vs. SD
Kumar Rocker vs. OAK
Aaron Civale vs. PIT
Kyle Gibson vs. COL
I don’t see much to like tomorrow, so I’d jump in on Festa or Wacha today - both of those guys are pitching in very important games against bad lineups.
I saw yesterday that Festa has one of the best K/9 rates in the league.
K/9 Leaders
80 innings minimum
Crochet 12.87
Snell 12.55
Skenes 11.47
Sale 11.40
Glasnow 11.28
Herz 11.08
S Gray 10.98
Flaherty 10.83
Ragans 10.77
Pivetta 10.75
K/9 matters to me because my home league uses K/9. I set that league up in 2007, so a lot of the original rules and categories are still in place. I wouldn’t set it up the same way today, but it’s what we’ve all known for almost two decades now so we’re hesitant to change anything.
For awhile, we didn’t even have the categories even. We had 7 hitting categories and 5 pitching categories; very silly stuff. We also had pitching home runs allowed as a category and hitter strikeouts. We’ve cleaned up the egregious things over the years. BUT HEY WHILE I’M TALKING ABOUT IT, here’s the update on the finals:
My team hit 19 homers and stole 15 bases last week while hitting .288, so we’re in a bit of a hangover phase, it seems. The good news is that Stupid Ass Clint isn’t making me pay for it.
I got six more scoreless innings from Kikuchi as he put a bow on his regular season. He’s been incredible with Houston:
10 GS, 60 IP, 5 W, 2.70 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, 31.8% K%, 5.9% BB%, 1.2 HR/9
He will head into free agency as a 33 year old. He’s past the time where he’d be set up to grab a huge payday, but this second-half should be rewarded pretty handsomely, especially given his strong overall numbers over the last three seasons:
84 GS, 444 IP, 4.24 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 27.0% K%, 7.9% BB%, 19.1% K-BB%
I don’t know if teams value K-BB% in the same way as I do, but I imagine they do. If we go back to 2022 and look for pitchers who have made at least 75 starts (25 per season) with a K-BB% above 19%, we find this list:
Cole, Ryan, Wheeler, Snell, Nola, Rodon, Gausman, Kirby, Peralta, Lopez, Gilbert, S Gray, Castillo, Cease, Gallen, Burnes, Kikuchi
^ That list is ordered by K-BB%. Kikuchi has had a consistent home run issue, so the ERA has been higher than most of those guys, but he’s a good Major League pitcher, it will be interesting to see where he ends up.
Zac Gallen is getting ready for the playoffs, apparently. They still have some work to do to get in there, but if they do - Gallen is ready.
‘24 Season: 3.65 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 25.1% K%, 8.7% BB%
September: 2.67 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 35.2% K%, 10.2% BB%
The Mets and Braves saw their games last night and tonight postponed, and now they’re slated to play a double header on Monday. It’s highly likely that the playoff picture is determined by that double header. I suppose it depends on what website you’re using, but I think it’s safe to say that double header will not factor into your head-to-head matchup this week if you’re in one.
Thousands of people took to Twitter to criticize MLB for not moving the series earlier and doing more to get the games in. The armchair QBs always entertain me. There’s so much behind the scenes stuff in these situations that we’re unaware of, and I don’t imagine “just move the games to a neutral site” is as easy a thing to do as it sounds. The Braves apparently did not want to give up the home games, and why would they? They’ll take that 1% edge or whatever it is if they can have it, we shouldn’t expect them to politely give it up if they don’t want to.
It does set up a potential tough spot for whoever of those teams does make the playoffs. Neither is winning the division, so they’ll have to play Tuesday. So, they’ll play a double header Monday and then immediately fly to either San Diego or Milwaukee to pay on Tuesday. Their pitching staffs will likely be pretty spent playing five games in four days preceding. But that’s baseball, baby. Maybe they should have won the division instead - losers!
Those Wild Card series’ are awesome now. I liked the one-game thing, it was exciting, but I like a four-game playoff slate even more. We’ll get that next Tuesday and Wednesday, with an outside shot at getting another one Thursday if all four series split the first two games.
I BET YOU’RE THINKING
“Big JA, you are so handsome and smart, could you please tell me what the chances are of all four series splitting like that?”
And yes, yes I can. Or at least I can get you close to the answer. Not every game is 50/50, of course, but they’re all pretty close to 50/50, so we can just use that as an assumption to set the table with.
There are four possible combinations of two things (we’ll call the things A and B):
AA
BB
AB
BA
Two of those four result in a split, so there’s a ~50% chance of a three-game series splitting the first two.
The chances of a 50% chance hitting four times in a row is expressed as 50% times itself four times.
.5 * .5 * .5 * .5 = .5^4 = 0.062
So we have very close to a 6.2% chance of seeing all four series go to a game three.
You can apply this same thing to genders. If you’re going to have two children, you have a 50% chance of ending up with one boy and one girl. People might think that having two boys is the same odds as having one of each, but no - you’re twice as likely to end up with a split rather than two of the same.
That’s because, as soon as you have one kid - one of the possible combinations is erased. After you have a boy, you cannot possibly have two girls. But you can still have the split. If your first kid is a girl, you can still have the split. So no matter what, the split is still a 50/50 shot after the first kid is conceived, while one of the other two options goes to 0%.
You’re welcome for all of that, I’m sure it changed many lives.
I’ve gotta get some real work done and then polish up the NFL DFS Week 4 Preview! Have a killer Thursday.
