Pitcher Review
I dated this girl named Brianna in seventh grade. I went to a private Christian school and I didn’t know what a penis was until at least 11th grade, so “dated” is a very loose term. I don’t think we ever even touched each other. But I liked her, she was hot, and things were going pretty well. After a couple of weeks, though, my friends started making fun of me about it - cooties or something, I don’t remember. But I sacrificed some stuff for her, you know? And then, at the end of the school year, we went on this field trip on the Gateway Clipper in Pittsburgh.
My mom was a chaperone. Brianna and the girls in my grade set this whole thing up where they’d wait until everyone was off the top deck, and then they’d put her up there and send me up there. And then she dumped me.
That’s pretty much what Spencer Arrighetti did to some of you last night. You ditched other SP options for him, you sacrificed, you had two great months, and then, just when it mattered the most - he broke your heart in front of your mom.
What a trap.
The good news is twofold.
I got over Brianna extremely fast. It took me about 90 minutes to pour all of my focus back onto my basketball career, and just one year later, I won MVP of the Pittsburgh East Christian School middle school boys basketball team. Just another example of my stunning resiliency and athleticism (there were three boys in my grade in 8th grade - three).
I don’t have Arrighetti in any leagues.
I did recommend the under 5.5 hits allowed prop on Arrighetti, and he allowed six hits in 0.2 innings - SO CLOSE!
Shota Imanaga has been marvelous lately, and he threw 78% of a no-hitter yesterday against the Pirates.
7 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 7 K, 2 BB, 21.1% SwStr%, 52.6% Strike%
He has a 16.0% SwStr% and a 29.9% Ball% in the second half with a 22% K-BB% and a 1.83 WHIP+.
MacKenzie Gore shined… (shown? was shining?) against the Marlins yesterday:
6 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 9 K, 1 BB, 18.3% SwStr%, 55.9% Strike%
Someone asked me on Twitter yesterday if we could trust Gore. Of course, we can’t, but I guess yesterday, you could. Yesterday, you couldn’t trust him, but if you go back in time to yesterday, then you can trust him.
So I wasn’t wrong. I still have several weeks left to not be wrong according to my proclamation yesterday.
The Bowden Francis run of dominance ended yesterday, but it wasn’t too violent of a crash. He didn’t Arrighetti your ass.
6 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 6 K, 0 BB, 18% SwStr%, 49.4% Strike%
Those are still pretty nice marks, and the start was a tough matchup with the Phillies - I’d continue to start him.
Yu Darvish got eased back in:
63 pitches, 2.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 4 K, 2 BB, 17.5% SwStr%
He’s someone you could consider starting next week. He has a very good 50% Strike% and 32% Ball% on the year.
We might be seeing Zac Gallen waking up, he had a very nice start.
100 pitches, 6 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 8 K, 4 BB, 13% SwStr%, 54% Strike%
He’s had two very good starts in his last three, although there was a bad start sandwiched between them.
He’s had a disappointing season overall.
2022: 31 GS, 26.9% K%, 6.6% BB%, 2.54 ERA, 0.91 WHIP
2023: 34 GS, 26.0% K%, 5.6% BB%, 3.47 ERA, 1.12 WHIP
2024: 24 GS, 23.6% K%, 8.8% BB%, 3.69 ERA, 1.28 WHIP
Command has always been king with him, and he has not had the elite command in 2024.
And it’s probably time to give up fully on Bobby Miller.
5 IP, 5 H, 7 ER, 8 K, 3 BB, 48.2% Strike%, 38.8% Ball%
He just cannot throw strikes. His 44.2% Strike% for the season is in the bottom 10% of the league. He’s around guys like Griffin Canning, Logan Allen, and Trevor Rogers. The SwStr% has suffered because of that (11.9%). And his 93 Location+ is miserable. He has a lot of work to do - but the arm talent is certainly still a bright spot for the future. It’s probably not time to give up on him in deep dynasty leagues.
Seth Lugo did Seth Lugo things.
7 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 4 K, 1 BB
He now has four starts with
→ 7+ IP
→ Less than 3 ER
→ Less than 5 K
Only Tyler Anderson also has four, and there have only been 77 of those starts all season long.
There are four pitchers this season with
→ 20+ GS
→ K% below 22%
→ WHIP+ below 1.70
They are:
Logan Webb (20.6% K%, 1.59 WHIP+)
Cristopher Sanchez (19.8% K%, 1.66 WHIP+)
Seth Lugo (21.1% K%, 1.69 WHIP+)
Tanner Houck (21.2% K%, 1.69 WHIP+)
The group average WHIP+ for pitchers with below-average K% is 2.02. The group average WHIP+ for pitchers with above-average K% is 1.80. Strikeouts matter a great deal.
The other three listed there with Lugo are different than him because they all have extremely high ground ball rates, while Lugo does not (46%). Lugo has shown some magical ability to generate soft contact even while hitters are elevating the ball. Here are the wOBAs he’s given up on each batted ball type, along with the league average.
Barrels:
Lugo: 1.101
League: 1.293Solids (almost barrels):
Lugo: .482
League: .577Flares (line drives):
Lugo: .606
League: .632Topped (ground balls):
Lugo: .140
League: .163Unders (Pop ups / weak fly balls)
Lugo: .077
League: .073Weak (anything under 60mph)
Lugo: .222
League: .177
He beats the league average in everything but the bottom two there.
I don’t have anything more to say about it, it will always confuse me.

Hitter Review
Pete Crow-Armstrong continued his second half resurgence with three hits, a homer, two runs, and three RBI.
His second half:
151 PA, .281/.318/.482, 5 HR, 8.0% Brl%, 19.9% K%, 4.6% BB%, 71% Cont%, .252 xBA, .327 xwOBA
There’s been a bit of good luck, as you can tell the AVG and xBA gap there.
He had a much higher 26% K% in the first half, so a significant gain there has facilitated the better performance. It’s always fantastic to cut your strikeout rate down by that much. He is still going to make his fantasy value mostly with stolen bases, but there’s batting average upside if the K% stays that low.
I don’t really believe in the power numbers; he just doesn’t hit the ball hard.
Dansby Swanson had been very good of late. His last two weeks:
56 PA, .347/.429/.673, 1.102 OPS, 4 HR, 5 SB, 17 R, 16 RBI
There’s a shortstop to add if you’re in need.
Taylor Ward has also been hot:
.305/.344/.678, 5 HR, 23.4% K%, 3.1% BB%, 5 HR, 10 R, 8 RBI, 1 SB
He’s had a higher xwOBA than wOBA for a large portion of this year. And he ranks 17th with his differential of 0.021.
Addison Barger is a MAGIC FORMULA QUALIFIER! The Blue Jays have been throwing these infielders at us all year. At various points of the season we have streamed in Davis Schneider, Spencer Horwitz, and Will Wagner. And now - add Barger to the list! His last three weeks:
64 PA, .267/.297, .583, 5 HR, 14.0% Brl%, 17.2% K%, .291 xBA, .382 xwOBA
Unlike Wagner, Barger has been playing everyday, starting 9 of the last 10 Blue Jays games and 17 of their last 22.
He does have some bat speed, but nothing else in the profile has been good this year. But if you’re really desperate for an infielder (I happen to be in this boat in my home league…), this guy can hit some homers and drive in some runs down the stretch (he is the #5 hitter right now).
Blue Jays 2024 Stats From the Main Dashboard:
One more - Lars Nootbaar has been deemed super ultra mega hot. His last three weeks:
69 PA, .323/.391/.516, .907 OPS, 2 HR, 13% Brl%, 56% Hard%, 12% K%, .427 xwOBA, 52% GB%
His savant page is lit up like a Christmas tree.
He has had health issues this year, and the homers haven’t really shown up, but other than that he’s been solid in the second half.
140 PA, .270/.357/.410, .767 OPS
I wouldn’t rush out to add him, but if you’re in need of an outfielder - he’s been hitting the ball hard all year.
I’m still buzzing about NFL opening weekend, so there’s more going on that front today!
