NFL Weekly Notes - Week 6
A weekly statistical summary of the most recent NFL week, brought to you every Monday and updated on Tuesday with the MNF game data.
I am fortunate to have faith and a family, and a lot of other great stuff to live my life for. That gives my emotional state a very high floor. But I would be lying if I said I don’t feel a little bit down, a little more useless after baseball season concludes. That’s a pretty sad thing to have any percentage at all of my attitude dictated by something so external like professional sports. It’s not about the baseball as much as it about the busyness of my life. I have so much stuff to do when the season is going because of this blog. When it’s over, there’s not much to do; the subscribers start going away, and nobody is talking about baseball much on Twitter.
So this NFL stuff helps. I hate being bored. I think it’s insane that anybody would ever be bored in the world today. There’s just so much stuff to do and to learn, so much opportunity cost when you’re just sitting around doing nothing valuable. I’m not sure my spending a handful of hours a week writing about the NFL qualifies as “valuable,” but it’s fun for me, and there are at least a couple hundred people out there who find some level of value in my work - so it counts.
I’ve also thrown myself back into reading books. Before I had kids and before I had this side job, I’d read 40-50 books a year. I love it, but circumstances have pushed me down to probably 10-20, with most of those coming in the winter months. I’m back at it, though; I’ve read three in the last couple of months.
All of that to say, let’s attack another week of NFL notes. I’m coming off of a winning DFS week, so that’s a motivator to dig in here.

Geno Smith threw it 51 more times this week. They ran a lot of plays, so there were still 19 carries to go to Kenneth Walker and Zach Charbonnet. Nothing else changes on the Seattle side, it was more of the same, so we can move on.SFO:
Seven different players saw targets here, nobody exceeded five catches. It’s a spread-out offense. The big development was the injury to Jordan Mason. He appears to be fine, but Isaac Guerendo showed what he can do with 9.9 yards per carry. He would be a must-start player if Mason and CMC are ever out at the same time, but I doubt that happens.

They’re now 1-5. Trevor Lawrence has been mediocre with 7.05 yards per attempt and a +.02 average EPA. Evan Engram is healthy again and racked up a team-leading 11 targets and caught 10 of them for 102 yards. He has a target on 29% of his routes, that’s the best mark for any starting tight end in football. Tank Bigsby could be in for a big role next week with Travis Etienne suffering a hamstring injury. He has averaged 7.2 yards per carry on 41 attempts this year, much better than Etienne’s mark of 4.1.CHI
The Bears are improving in a hurry. Caleb Williams:
Weeks 1-3: 5.23 YPA, -0.31 EPA, 2:4 TD:INT
Weeks 4-6: 8.38 YPA, +0.34 EPA, 7:1 TD:INT
That has benefited everybody around him. D’Andre Swift has 277 yards on the ground and 169 more throught the air in his last three games, so he’s been very, very good. The targets since things turned around: Moore 29, Kmet 23, Odunze 22, Swift 17, Allen 15, Johnson 8, Carter 6, Everett 4. Cole Kmet leads the team with a 20% Tgt/Route and has 258 yards and three touchdowns in these three games.

Nick Chubb is on his way back, so that will put the current RBs out of play. David Njoku is healthy and saw seven targets this week. His 25% Tgt/Route leads the team, but Deshaun Watson has been so, so bad (5.1 YPA, -0.27 EPA) that it’s hard to use any Browns player in fantasy.PHI:
They came out of the bye fully healthy and got back tot heir normal usage.→ Barkley: 18 rushes, 2 targets
→ AJ Brown: 9 targets, 6-116-1
→ D Smith: 4 targets, 3-64-1They only threw it 25 times, so there wasn’t a ton of work to go around. Dallas Goedert got hurt, and that opened up some work for Grant Calcaterra who went 4-67-0 on his four targets.

IND:
Joe Flacco started this one after the Colts played it safe with Anthony Richardson, who was a game time decision. That was once again great for Josh Downs who went 7-66-1 on nine targets. Nobody else had more than five, he’s clearly the preferred target of Flacco. Jonathan Taylor remained out, so Trey Sermon got 18 more carries but struggled mightily with just 29 yards and zero targets. Tyler Goodson was better with 8-51-0 on the ground and 4-14-0 through the air. It’s probably Richardson and Taylor next week, which downgrades everybody else.TEN
Tony Pollard had a down game through the air with just three catches for -5 yards, but busted a touchdown run to make for a good day on the ground (17-93-1). The pass catchers are rough here. Will Levis has just a 5.6 YPA and a -.36 EPA. Nobody has eclipsed even 16 catches or 175 yards this year, and Pollard is the guy leading the team with 16.

The Cardinals got smacked here. They didn’t have the ball a ton, running just 58 plays. It was a down game for everybody but Trey McBride who went 8-96-0 on his eight targets.GNB:
Jordan Love is good. He has a 7.7 YPA and a +.08 EPA this year with 1,131 yards and a 12:6 TD:INT. They were fully healthy for this one, so the targets were spread: Reed (6), Kraft (4), Doubs (4), Watson (3), Jacobs (3)Romeo Doubs had the big game with two touchdowns. Watson and Reed both caught one as well. It’s not been a good year for Josh Jacobs, who went just 18-62-0 on the ground and 3-28-0 through the air with no touchdowns in this one.

The Ravens shut down the Commanders enough to get a 30-23 win here. Jayden Daniels ran for just 22 yards, but did throw for 269 on a solid 7.7 YPA and a 2:0 TD:INT. With Brian Robinson out, Austin Ekeler led the backfield, but still only carried it nine times. It was a pass-heavy attack for Washington. The targets: Noah Brown (8), McLaurin (7), Zaccheaus (6), Ertz (5), Ekeler (5), McCaffrey (1), Dyami Brown (1)BAL
They ran it 50% of the time, a very high number relative to the league. Derrick Henry added 132 yards and two touchdowns to his total, and Zay Flowers took most of the pass game work with nine catches and 132 yards on his nine targets. Mark Andrews finally found paydirt, but he still split targets with Isaiah Likely (four each). Jackson and Henry are elite fantasy players, Zay Flowers has enough upside to matter, but nobody else is interesting.

The Texans hammered the Patriots here. Joe Mixon returned and di most of the work with 13-102-1 on the ground and 2-30-1 threw the air. Targets: Dell (9), Schultz (8), Diggs (7), Mixon (3), Pierce (1). It hasn’t been the best fantasy season for CJ Stroud who threw for just 192 yards in this one. He’s sixth in the league in passing yards and has ten touchdowns, so he’s a clear starter, but some people were expecting him to run away with the yardage title and it doesn’t seem like that’s going to happen.NWE
Drake Maye went 20/33 for 243 yards and three touchdowns. That was a pretty good fantasy day, but he threw two interceptions and posted a very bad -0.26 EPA. The targets: Douglas (9), Henry (5), Polk (4), Gibson (4), Boutte (3), Bourne (2), Hasty (2), Hooper (2). That is a good sign for Demario Douglas, who might be available in plenty of leagues. With Rhamondre Stevenson out, Antonio Gibson took 13 carries but ran for just 19 yards and went 3-24-0 through the air. No good.

Baker Mayfield now leads the league with 15 touchdowns. This time, it was Chris Godwin with the huge game (11-125-2). Rachaad White was out, and that led to a surprising split in the backfield, but both guys smashed this Saints defense.→ Sean Tucker: 14-136-1, 3-56-1
→ Bucky Irving: 14-81-1, 3-24-0Irving played 64% of the snaps while Tucker was at 38%, so the edge is still to Irving - but clearly this is a team that likes to split things up with their running backs.

It was the first of a few starts that we’ll see Spencer Rattler make. He was pretty bad with just a 55% completion rate, a 6.1 YPA, two interceptions, and a -0.31 EPA. Chris Olave left early with a concussion, and this offense really struggled with efficiency despite scoring 27 points (there was a punt return touchdown that helped). They averaged just 4.3 yards per play. Alvin Kamara led the team with 41 rushing yards, and Foster Moreau led through the air with just 54 yards. Rattelr was all over the place with his targets: Kamara (8), Means (8), Shaheed (7), Mims (4), Johnson (3), Wilson (3), Tipton (2), Morean (2), Olave (1)

They handled this one winning 23-16, and it was a shutout into the third quarter. JK Dobbins was the workhorse with 25 carries. He took those totes for 96 yards and a score. Through the air, nobody exceeded 44 yards. Kimani Vidal played in his first professional game and caught a touchdown, but carried it just four times for 11 yards. Justin Herbert has been bad for his pass catchers, averaging just 6.5 yards per attempt. Ladd McConkey had eight more targets and now leads the team by ten (32 on the year).DEN
There’s just nothing happening here. Bo Nix has not improved as the year has gone on. The split the carries, and nobody had even seven in this particuliar game. Courtland Sutton keep savings his fantasy days with late touchdowns, going 4-51-1 in this game.

My Steelers cruised in this one, although the game was close at halftime. Justin Fields has Russ Wilson right on his heels now, but he got it done with 145 passing yards, 59 rushing yards, and two score (both on the ground). They did get George Pickens more involved here with eight targets, but he went just 3-53-0. Najee Harris was the man of the match taking his 14 carries for 106 yards and a score.LVR:
There was no Davante Adams again, and the Raiders could do almost nothing against this tough Steelers defense. Brock Bowers might be the TE1 though with another nice game (9-71-0 on 10 targets). Nobody else is worthy of a start besides Adam and Bowers.

They did not have trouble moving the ball against this weak Panthers defense, but they also didn’t hvae to move very quickly or pass very much. Kirk Cousins completed just 19 of his 30 attempts for 225 yards and a score. Tyler Allgeier (19-105-1) and Bijan Robinson (15-95-2) both had nice fantasy games, and Drake London was the main guy through the air with a 6-71-1 line on his ten targets.CAR:
The struggles continued for Andy Dalton, and he could lose the job soon. Chuba Hubbard had another useful game on the ground with 92 yards and he caught five more balls for 11 yards. He did not score, so it wasn’t a score you couldn’t win without. Diontae Johnson tacked on 10 more targets to his season for a 6-78-1 line. I believe he had 3-30-1 in the first drive, so it was a bit of a disappointing final line. He’s near a WR1 right now, but he is hardly worth of even WR3 consideration if Bryce Young returns as the QB.

DET:
This was the shocker of the week with the Lions winning 47-9. They almost covered the 51.5 O/U by themselves. Jared Goff put a huge 12.6 YPA, throwing for 315 yards on just 18 completions. Three different guys caught touchdowns, and nobody caught more than four balls.DAL:
Horrible game for Dak Prescott. He went 17/33 for 178 yards, no scores, and two interceptions. CeeDee Lamb still managed a decent game with 7-89-0 on his 14 targets. KaVontae Turpin was their second option here with 4-24-0 on seven targets, but everybody besides Lamb busted pretty hard.

They won the game 17-7, but you’d have to consider it a disappointing game for the offense. Joe Burrow was fine at 19/28 for 208 yards, but did not throw a touchdown. Tee Higgins (7-77-0) and Ja’Marr Chase (5-72-0) once again did most of the work in the passing game, but neither guy scored and the volume was down - so neither guy had the game you liked. Chase Brown seems to be the RB1 for them, taking ten carries to Zack Moss’s six. Brown scored another touchdown with a 10-53-1 line on the ground. Brown has averaged 5.4 yards per carry this year while Moss is at just 3.6. He outsnapped Moss 35-24 in this one.NYG:
They were again missing Malik Nabers and Devin Singletary, and this time that really hurt them as they averaged just 4.1 yards per play. Wan’Dale Robinson saw 11 targets but that turned into a weak 5-50-0 line. Tyrone Tracy is worth a start whe Singletary is out, he took 17 carries for 50 yards and a score and had a very nice 6-57-0 line throug the air.
