Other Positions
It’s hard to compare outfield with the other positions since there are at least twice as many outfielders in the draft than any other position. And there are plenty of fantasy leagues out there that use five outfielders, meaning that there are at least 50 outfielders in starting lineups.
For the $ depth analysis table, I assumed a 12-team, three-outfielder league. This means that the replacement outfielder was the 37th-best, but that could be way off depending on your league type.
Regardless, we have to go really deep here. There are 86 outfielders in the top 350 ADP. So I’m going to divide the preview into two parts. We’ll look at the top 40 or so today and then the rest another day.
Since there are so many names to cover, I’m going to talk about individual names even less - but I will point out my favorite picks as we go along. Remember that all of these players (and more) are written up in detail in the team previews series, so you can also refer to those if you’re looking for my analysis on a given player.
Tier 1
Ronald Acuna Jr.
He is at least $5 above everybody else in every projection system, which is a huge gap, and if you take out my projection system, he’s more than $8 ahead. So it’s clear you’re taking Acuna Jr. if you have the first pick.
He is essentially worth the second-best OF plus a guy like Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Julio Rodriguez plus Lourdes Gurriel’s value gets you to Acuna. Crazy stuff.
Tier 2
Julio Rodriguez
Corbin Carroll
Mookie Betts
Kyle Tucker
Fernando Tatis Jr.
Aaron Judge
All of these guys except possibly Judge will go in the first round of your draft. Five of the six are five-category players, while Judge is elite in everything but steals. They’re all a tier above the rest in my mind. The order you see there is how I rank them.
Adding Bobby Witt Jr. to the mix, the first round is full of HR+SB+AVG studs, and because of that, I don’t want anything to do with taking a pitcher in the first round. There’s a pretty significant gap in all hitters after you get outside of the top 12 hitters, so I want to make sure I have one of them on my team, and if I can ever get two, I’m doing it. Pitching can wait!
ADP-based favorites: Rodriguez, Tatis Jr.
