I told my wife that weekend baseball writing was done since the regular season ended, so I’m kind of sneaking this one.
This was a pretty nice draw for the Tigers. You would have to say the Tigers are the weakest team remaining, on paper at least. If you believe in intangible stuff like momentum and team chemistry and destiny and that stuff - then you’ll disagree. I imagine I lost most of those people along the way here. This is a data warehouse, not a feelings warehouse.
This series could truly go either way. I think the Guardians are a -120 favorite or something tight. I had a dream last night that Jose Ramirez hit a two-run homer in the first inning today. That bodes well for them.
Tarik Skubal is clearly the best pitcher in the stadium, and there’s a big gap before you get down to the second best, who is probably Tanner Bibee. It’s a five game series, and Skubal is slated for game two - so it’s a stretch to think he can pull off pitching in game five if it happens.
Neither lineup wows you, but Cleveland does have that Ramirez guy and then a very good bat in Josh Naylor, and some guys that are just tough outs like Steven Kwan and Andres Gimenez.
But yeah, I’m not making any confident prediction here. Might as well roll with the momentum and pick the Tigers in fivee.
The Phillies came in as the third most likely team to take down the World Series. It’s hard to argue with that. They’ll roll out Wheeler, Cristopher Sanchez, Aaron Nola, and Ranger Suarez. The bullpen could be better, but it’s not a huge problem. The lineup is very strong and full of postseason experience, if that matters.
The Mets are feeling like they’re destined for something after that dramatic win in Milwaukee, but they just don’t have the pitching for this. Kodai Senga does return today, which is super interesting. He managed all of 5.1 innings in the Majors this year with that brutal injury in his first start, and since then he’s thrown just one inning in a minor league game. I have no idea how many pitches or innings he’ll throw today. I’d say they’ll let him go as long as he’s pitching well, so it could be one inning or it could be five. He’s a big addition back, but it’s pretty optimistic to think he’ll be effective in this situation.
I’m not rocking the boat here, I’m taking the Phillies sweep.
The Royals pulled the short stick as they’re the ones who head to New York instead of Cleveland. I imagine we get some extra velocity from Gerrit Cole today, and he’d be the game five guy as well. He’s not as imposing as he once was, but it’s possible he’s been reserving his best stuff for now. The Yankees don’t have a really bad SP they’re forced to use. Carlos Rodon, Luis Gil, and Nestor Cortes are the other guys here, and they’re all effective arms - although in the case of Gil and Cortes there’s less security.
The Royals fans feel just fine about Michael Wacha and Brady Singer. I sure don’t! They go Wacha today and then go back to Ragans + Lugo. If they steal a win today, they’re really cooking - it’s hard for them to lose two straight games started by Ragans and Lugo.
I could see it happening for the Royals. They have solid enough pitching and a good mix of bats. But the Yankees are really tough to keep off the scoreboard. The Soto + Judge combo is legendary, and with the home field advantage I can’t take the upset here.
Yankees in four.
This is the best series of the bunch. The loaded Dodgers team comes in with an underwhelming rotation and they take on the Padres who might be the best team in baseball right now. The Padres ripped through the Braves for two games and just have so much going right for them, even with that brutal Musgrove news yesterday. I think it’s a coin flip, honestly. After Yamamoto and Flaherty, the Dodgers are scraping the bottom of the barrel for starting pitching - and they’ve never prioritized their bullpen (they haven’t needed to!). This is the series to watch, and I’m hyped up for it. But I’m giving the Padres the nod here because their pitching is just so good.
Padres in five.
Zack Wheeler ($9,300) vs. Mets
Gerrit Cole ($8,300) vs. Royals
Tanner Bibee ($8,000) vs. Tigers
Yoshinobu Yamamoto ($9,000) vs. Padres
These are the top four. The Tigers lineup is a step below the rest projection-wise, so that puts Bibee in the conversation despite his ceiling not being quite where the other names are.
I wouldn’t be feeling all that great about Gerrit Cole today if I’m just considering the regular season. His velocity was down, the strikeouts were down, and he just didn’t look like Cole. But there’s a real chance he comes out full bore today and just blows the Royals away. I’d like to be on that side of the betting card, per say.
Wheeler is pretty obvious for my one lineup. There are no questions at all with him, and he’s the big home favorite here. So I’m locking in Wheeler and then probably taking that Cole discount.
Aaron Judge $6,500 vs. Wacha
Shohei Ohtani $6,800 vs. Cease
Juan Soto $6,100 vs. Wacha
Bobby Witt Jr. $6,200 vs. Cole
We can probably only choose two of them. Judge and Ohtani were well ahead of the rest of the field in DFS impact this year, but that’s reflected in the price. I’m also wondering if Ohtani will be as focused on stealing bases in the playoffs. At the end of the year there, he was clearly just chasing 50-50. I think he was more focused on that with the steals rather than the steals themselves actually helping the team win the given game. But yeah, if I can possibly cram both of these guys in - I’m going to do it.
Austin Wells $4,000 vs. Wacha
Gleyber Torres $4,200 vs. Wacha
Jake Cronenworth $3,500 vs. Yamamoto
Luis Arraez $3,900 vs. Yamamoto
Vinnie Pasquantino $4,000 vs. Cole
Yuli Gurriel $2,500 vs. Cole
Alex Verdugo $2,900 vs. Wacha
Bryson Stott $4,100 vs. Senga
The model is leaning into the Yankees. That’s not surprising, of course. He’s the most hittable starter on the board, although we will see plenty of the Tigers and Mets bullpens.
Four-game slates are tough, and I’m 0/2 so far in the playoffs. Here’s another shot at it.
SP Wheeler $9,300
SP Bibee $8,000
C Wells $4,000
1B Solano $2,400
2B Massey $3,800
3B Cabrera $2,800
SS Witt $6,200
OF Judge $6,500
OF Castellanos $4,000
OF Verdugo $2,90
Enjoy the Saturday postseason baseball!
