I am writing this while sick, so once again, I am performing feats that few others in human history have pulled off. I can’t believe it took more than a month for my daughter to bring home an illness, but she brought home a good one this time. Even with that, I doubt I can pull off sitting on the couch and watching baseball from 3:00pm until midnight. That’s probably going to be pushing it, but this is a very exciting day of baseball. The Tigers and Royals will host their first postseason games in a long time, both of those series are at 1-1. The Phillies and Dodgers find themselves facing elimination on the road.
What we don’t have is a lot of great pitching. Dylan Cease and Seth Lugo are on the board, but they both face very tough matchups. And then we have a group of guys that are hard to like and will likely be pulled quickly if they get into trouble.
The options at starting pitcher are pretty clear:
Dylan Cease ($8,900) vs. Dodgers
Ranger Suarez ($8,200) vs. Mets
Seth Lugo ($8,500) vs. Yankees
Clarke Schmidt ($7,900) vs. Royals
Cease is the best fantasy pitcher by a good distance, but the Dodgers are really tough, and they did just see him a few days ago. Schmidt is not projecting well, but he’s the cheapest viable option on this short slate, so that’s worth something. I believe I’m going to Cease + Suarez.
Shohei Ohtani ($6,500) vs. Cease
Aaron Judge ($6,300) vs. Lugo
Bobby Witt Jr. ($6,000) vs. Schmidt
Fernando Tatis Jr. ($5,700) vs. Knack/Bullpen
Jose Ramirez ($6,100) vs. Montero/Bullpen
I think we need to get two of these guys. If you’re into the recency thing, Tatis Jr. is going to be your pick. He’s slugging 1.333 this postseason. Ohtani hasn’t been very good yet (.231/.231/.462, 1 HR), and Witt (.158/.158/.158) and Judge (.143/.333/.143) have been downright bad.
Three games mean absolutely nothing to me. My lineup features Judge, Witt, and Tatis - I was able to cram them all in with the help of some of the guys below.
Alex Cobb is popping here with the over 3.5 strikeouts. He is extremely hard to project, however, because he’s thrown just 16 innings al season. In that time, it’s a horrible 7.4% SwStr% and 42% Strike%. So he’s not been good, and this could be a 2-3 innings situation. I wouldn’t take the bet, but the model does like it.
It's also liking Ranger Suarez over 3.5 strikeouts here for +120 on MGM. And I’m into that.
And the last one - Dylan Cease over 5.5 strikeouts +220 at BetRivers. That’s a huge return for just six strikeouts, something Cease does routinely.
These are not really projected-based, just off the top of my head for S’s and G’s.
