That was the apostle Paul writing to the believers in Corinth about how he was enduring his persecution.
And that’s how I feel a little bit this morning, because, while I was sleeping, somebody else in my league added Zebby Matthews.
It looks like Pablo Lopez will hit the IL. And that opens up a rotation spot. Their AAA rotation looks like this:
It could be David Festa. He was first to the show last year, but so far this season (including spring), Matthews has looked like the better pitcher. Matthews made a start on Tuesday, so he won’t be available to pitch until at least Sunday, but that lines up pretty well with where Pablo would have gone again. So I think it will be him, and I’d go add him right now if possible.
We are having those classic early-season problems where the MLB data team doesn’t have the Statcast data available. So the notes are delayed because of that. I can’t do much of anything without that data. There are other ways to get it, and I do scrape all the games myself, but all the automation is built upon the MLB API feed. So there will be delays at times.
Let’s talk about some pitcher standouts from yesterday.
Kevin Gausman looked like his old self:
8 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 10 SO, 0 BB
I’m using my other tool (for my personal use only because it is really buggy) to see this start breakdown:
Apparently, my IP address has been banned from grabbing MLB player images. Nice!
Once again, the four-seamer did the heavy lifting. I still hate that 12.9% SwStr% on the splitter. However, it was great to see the 51.6% Strike% on it. He got a lot of called strikes and foul balls with it.
His fastball is really, really good. And that stayed true even last year when he was struggling overall. You can see that he is not confident with any other pitch. He’s thrown just 32 sliders in his three starts.
His K% is now up to 21% and the walk rate is great at 4.4%. I think Gausman is a mid-range fantasy starter. He’s not someone you feel great about, but clearly, he’s good enough for most leagues. I think you’ll have some really bad starts along the way unless this splitter improves, but the fastball and the presence of a splitter he can at least throw near the strike zone helps.
Justin Verlander also showed out last night with 20 whiffs. I really wouldn’t have thought he was capable of that anymore. He also gave up five earned runs and walked three, but the SwStr% of 22.2% and Ball% of 27.8% was sick.
He has double-digit whiffs in all three starts so far.
The main lesson to be taken from this might be to go ahead and target this Reds lineup with SPs, especially when they’re on the road.
The fastball is around 95 for Verlander, and it’s working great.
The slider has been a killer, as well. So things are looking pretty good for the 60-year-old. Who knows, man, baseball is weird.
Things aren’t great for Yusei Kikuchi. He has not been the pitcher he was with the Astros last year. That’s crazy that the Angels would give someone a big contract and have it not pay off. Wonder if they’ve ever done that before?
You should probably hold for awhile longer, unless it’s a very shallow league. I’d take someone like Kris Bubic over Kikuchi right now. I do like Kikuchi’s track record. And if that tells us anything, it’s that the strikeouts should come. A 22% K% just isn’t who Kikuchi has been in his career. But if it doesn’t, he’s in real trouble because he’s never been good when allowing the ball in play. He’s allowed four dingers so far, and that’s something he’s done a whole lot of in his career.
I also don’t think the Sean Burke thing is happening. He has a poor 11% SwStr% and 14% K% so far this year. His command is, in a word, poopy, so he really needs strikeouts to have any chance.
It’s 10:30 now because the data took so long to come through, so I’ve gotta finish this up.
One thing before I go, though. Please ignore that Kyren Paris has hit three homers in two games since I first called him a fade. The #1 rule of MLB Data Warehouse is that you should always give me credit when I’m right, and completely and immediately forget about any takes I had that turn out wrong.
