MLB Daily Notes - April 10th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
The paywall is all the way at the bottom here, so everybody can see a full version of the daily notes.
My new thing has been adding automated tweets as part of the live game tracker script, so now my Twitter account tweets out as soon as someone
Goes above 15 whiffs
Goes above 20 whiffs
Is showing increased (+1.5mph) velo on their fastball
Is showing decreased (-1.5mph) velo on their fastball
Hits two homers
And I’ll probably add more to that without going too far with it.
Ended up with this beauty last night on the debut of the increased velo tracker:
The old FFmph. If you’re a coding bro, you know what happened there. Mixed up the insertion of the variable names. All of this automation stuff is just so fun to me, having an idea and then coding it out and seeing it work in real life is a pretty fun process. I’m so thankful for all of this stuff.
George Kirby
It looks either like my tracker is busted, or Kirby really toned down the velo after his first ten fastballs, because the average velo ended at 95.9 on the pitch yesterday. That’s above the season average for sure, but not dramatically so:
Good news, my tracker was not busted. Kirby indeed came out ripping but then really calmed it down after the first couple of innings:
It’s funny how much stuff we can write about a guy without even saying the actual result. It was another bad start in the box score, he lasted just four innings giving up five earnies on eight hits and striking out three.
That’s an 8.16 ERA on the year with just a 19% K% and of course the sparkling 3% BB%.
The underlying stuff is fine. He has a good 51% Strike%, still an elite 29% Ball%, and a .295 xwOBA. He’s allowed a .360 BABIP, which is 50 points above his career average, so there’s been some bad luck here, but the 19% K% is a cause for slight concern.
Here’s the ball in play details using the Statcast algorithm (“Pitcher BIP Analysis” tab on the dashboard):
The top table there is the league averages. So you can see he’s given up an .813 average on flares (weaker line drives), which is well above the league’s .672 mark. You still don’t want to give up many flares, because they’ll go for a hit more often than not, but they aren’t as damaging as the solids and barrels. He’s been a bit unfortunate on “Topped”, those are ground balls.
Anyways, I wouldn’t worry about Kirby, but there is a lesson here about drafting a low strikeout pitcher as your SP1. They are more susceptible to these kinds of “BABIP outings” where they just get dinked and dunked to death. That isn’t going to happen to Tyler Glasnow very much because he’s just not allowing many balls in play, and Kirby is much more dependent on his fielders making outs for him.
Tyler Glasnow
Speaking of the man, he was incredible in Minnesota. A true Glasnow outing here.
7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 14 K, 0 BB
That was just the 12th start since 2021 with at least 14 strikeouts and no walks:
And it only happened once all of last season.
The guy has three deadly pitches. Ever since he fixed his walk problem, he’s been one of the best pitchers in baseball. And the best part is, he’s escaped the injury bug for three whole weeks now! Here is hoping for a full Glasnow season, my money would be on him to win the Cy Young now if he can get to 25 starts.
Nathan Eovaldi
It wasn’t the most efficient outing for Eovaldi, but the whiffs kept coming. He matched Glasnow with 21 and struck out eight in 5.2 innings. He’s now at a 28% K% and a 6% BB% on the year, elite stuff. That’s pretty well backed up by a 51.4% Strike% and 33.2% Ball%
The 17.5% SwStr% is pretty surprising, the four-seamer and splitter have really been good:
I don’t think Eovaldi is capable of keeping this level up for very long, so I’d call him a sell-high option right now.
Martin Perez
I just want to get ahead of this, you should not pick up Martin Perez. I know I’m about to get a handful of DMs about him, but just don’t buy it.
He threw eight scoreless yesterday with a 7:0 K:BB, but a poor 10% SwStr% and a 48% Strike%. For the season, he has a bad 45.4% Strike%, a 10% SwStr%, and a 19% K%. The .298 BABIP isn’t out of sorts, he’s getting things done with the 55% GB% and a nice 6.3% BB%. But he’s not going to do this often, most of his outings are going to be pretty bleh, and this hurts me to say as a true enjoyer of the Pirates 9-3 start.
Cristian Javier
ERA: 1.10
xERA: 1.93
SIERA: 5.43
Goofy start to the year for Javier. The K-BB% is legitimately awful at 19%-13%, but he’s allowed just two earned runs in 16.2 innings. He has not given up a home run yet, and going back to last year that’s six straight [regular season] starts without giving up a dinger. But he gave up 25 homers in 31 starts last season overall, and he’s been one of the highest FB% pitchers in the league since he came up.
That hasn’t changed this year:
Most FBs Allowed Without a HR
Javier 19
France 15
Anderson 14
Imanaga 13
Hudson 12
Lopez 12
Blanco 12
Rea 10
Sandoval 10
The homers are going to come for Javier, and given the continued bad K-BB%, things could get ugly really, really fast. He’s an amazing sell-high right now. Run for the freaking hills.
A.J. Puk
Just a quick note - if you were holding on, it is time to let go. He walked five more batters last night, he’s just not a starter, and I would expect him to be in the bullpen extremely soon, probably by this weekend.
He’s dead last last in the league in K-BB% at -10%. I didn’t even know it was possible to do get that low.
Shea Langeliers
Getting to some hitters, big Shea triple-donged last night and won me some nice DFS cash.
That brings him to four on the year, he’s been one of the few bright spots for an Oakland lineup which is hitting just .207/.284/.350
Good 21% Brl% and manageable 25% K%. The 66% Contact% makes me think more strikeouts are coming, but he’s certainly a start-worthy catcher in deep leagues (15 catchers or more?).
Checking in on some hitter MFQs:
Magic Formula Qualifiers - Hitters - Last 3 Weeks
Alex Kirilloff - 34 PA, 8.8 K%, 14.3 Brl%
Brandon Nimmo - 47 PA, 19.1 K%, 14.3 Brl%
Christian Yelich - 39 PA, 17.9 K%, 18.5 Brl%
Jake Cronenworth - 60 PA, 18.3 K%, 16.7 Brl%
Michael Conforto - 46 PA, 19.6 K%, 18.2 Brl%
Mike Trout - 46 PA, 17.4 K%, 18.2 Brl%
Riley Greene - 47 PA, 19.1 K%, 16.7 Brl%
Ryan Mountcastle - 45 PA, 15.6 K%, 14.7 Brl%
Salvador Perez - 45 PA, 20.0 K%, 14.3 Brl%
Yordan Alvarez - 54 PA, 13.0 K%, 19.0 Brl%
Very interesting to see Alex Kirilloff here. He was a hyped prospect coming up for Minnesota, but has had so many injuries and has just never had a full healthy look at big league pitching. But the success is there so far this year:
34 PA, .367/.412/.733, 1.145 OPS, 1 HR, 14.3% Brl%, 9% K%, 6% BB%, 72% Cont%, .385 xwOBA, 46% GB%
He’s started seven games and has hit 2nd or 3rd each time, but he’s for now in a strict platoon, having not started a game against left-handed pitching yet.
Elly De La Cruz
No hitter is more interesting than EDLC. Such an exciting, polarizing, outlier player.
Only eight hitters have a K% above 30% and a GB% above 50%. That’s a really, really bad combination of stats. Elly has a 38% K% and a 63% GB%. If you just told me those two numbers, I would assume the dude is hitting like .210. But no, he’s slashing .293/.356/.585. He’s homered twice, but one was an inside-the-park job, and the Brl% isn’t even good at 12.5% (this would be good with a lower K%, but with that many strikeouts it’s not a good numbers).
His BABIP is .455. He is going to be a high BABIP player, no doubt about it, but .455 is completely unsustainable. The freaking road runner couldn’t post a .450 BABIP in a full season. His career BABIP is now .356, so I think we would project .340-.350 for him once we get 1,000 PAs.
He’s a top-ten player on my roto player rater:
A lot of that is because of the six steals, and the steals will continue to come, I suppose. I just cannot believe that he keeps this OBP and AVG for long at all, and he’s not going to hit many homers with a 30% K% and a 55%+ GB% either. He still has work to do.
I’m not sure I’d call him a sell-high exactly, but if you could get a top 25 hitter in return for him I think that’s a no-brainer.
Here’s that full list of the nine hitters above a 30% K% and a 55% GB%
Nolan Jones, CES, Zack Gelof, Tim Anderson, Oneil Cruz, Jeimer Candelario, Elly De La Cruz, Brenton Doyle
So funny to see Oneil Cruz on the list too. He’s had a very similar season to Elly so far, because they are almost the same exact player, it seems.
A really bad 33% K% and a 57% GB% for him this year on a 70% Contact%. That’s not a horrible contact rate, but yeah the batting average isn’t going to stay anywhere near .300 for him for long, he has to get more balls in the air and cut that K% down into the twenties.
Jackson Holliday
I suppose I should mention that the O’s have promoted Holliday. This was just a few days before they’d have saved an extra year of control on him, so that to me means they already have some kind of extension agreement in place. I would expect news about a massive extension to be announced in the coming days.
He leads the minor leagues in plate appearances this year and hit .333/.482/.595 down there with two homers and one steal. The 14% K% is way below his 21% BB%, so he wasn’t having any trouble with AAA pitching.
The reason I wouldn’t give up too much for Holliday [in redraft leagues] is two-fold:
He’s probably going to strike out a lot
He doesn’t have a ton of raw power right now
I could be wrong about the first point, I guess, but it’s just so much more often that we see even these hypiest of hyped prospects come up and post a 30% K% for the first 200 PAs before improving on that.
In the short time in AAA there, he went for an 8% Brl% and maxed out at 108mph of EV. His 90th percentile mark was 105, which is about what you see from a league-average power bat in the Majors. So could he be a league average power bat right now? If he keeps the K% down and is able to lift the ball enough, yes, sure. I just think he’s going to struggle with the K% and probably the GB% as well. Or at least that’s my best projection.
Here’s what the skill projection model thinks:
This is better than I was expecting. He should be owned at least speculatively in all leagues, and I think he’s pretty likely to be useful in OBP leagues with the walk rate and the steals. Just don’t think this guy is going to turn a struggling [fantasy] offense around immediately.
Double slate DFS day, join our DraftKings league here! I’m really trying to get to the point where we have 20+ people in every contest.
That’ll do it for my words, this was a fun one! Here are the automated reports:
