I am not sure what has gotten into Andrew Abbott. I did not expect to see him at the top of a Friday night slate SP algo ranks. But that is where he is. He put up the #34 start of the year last night, according to our SP grading sheet.
The line:
6 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 11 K, 1 BB, 20.4% SwStr%, 50.5% Strike%, 39.8% Ball%
That has to be one of his highest SwStr% starts of his career. The changeup was absolutely deadly with a 47.4% SwStr%, and the Orioles couldn’t do anything off the curveball either (22.2% SwStr%, 67% Strike%, both pitches put up a .000 SLG). Here’s what it looks like for the season:
Let’s compare it to last year:
It all looks pretty much the same, except for the wildly better results this year.
So I am not convinced in the slightest bit. Abbott has always been a low-strikeout, high-fly-ball guy, and that does not turn into very good ratios. And he will have some very bad outings pitching in Great American Ballpark.
Drew Rasmussen shows up at #3 here. And boy was I right about that guy! His season now:
4 GS, 20.2 IP, 0.87 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, 28.9% K%, 6.6% BB%, 0 HR
I’m not even really sure how the guy does it. He is throwing 90%+ cutter, four-seam, and sinker. But they’re all great. The guy is so good.
The Rays also let him come out for the sixth inning last night and set a season high with 84 pitches. That’s a good sign, but will have to be very efficient to ever get through six. I don’t think that will change too much. But the spectacular ratios are too much to leave on waivers in any league type.
Speaking of the waiver wire, here are your week four waiver wire targets.
Luis L. Ortiz had another pretty good start, this time against the Pirates.
5 IP, 4 H< 2 ER, 8 K, 3 BB, 15.2% SwStr%, 52.2% Strike%, 35.9% Ball%
That brings his season K% to 24.7%. That’s a pretty interesting figure since he’s been below 20% in his career prior. I guess it shouldn’t be surprising to see a pitcher leave Pittsburgh and then start putting up better numbers. But I did kind of hope we were done with that.
The four-seamer has velo, but it’s never gotten whiffs in the past. This year, it is, albeit in just 121 offerings. The slider is his best pitch, and he’s been tinkering with cutters and sinkers and changeups ever since getting into a big league rotation. I think he’s worth keeping an eye on, but I wouldn’t start him with much confidence against any sort of competent MLB lineup.
Jacob deGrom got just eight whiffs!
7 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 7 K, 1 BB
Okay, so still a pretty strong start. But I’m not used to seeing any red on the page for deGrom.
The season K% is now at 23%. The season SwStr% is at 15.1%. That would suggest a K% of 27-29%, so that’s good news. The ball rate is good (34%) but still not the “that doesn’t even make sense” numbers we had gotten accustomed to from deGrom. But it’s good to see him healthy and throwing full pitch counts again (96 last night).
On the other side of deGrom was Yoshinobu Yamamoto who kept making his case for NL Cy Young. Maybe I shouldn’t be talking about Cy Young stuff in April, but Yamamoto is amazing.
5 GS, 29 IP, 0.93 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, 35.2% K%, 6.5% BB%
His 28.7% K-BB% is third in the league behind Gilbert and Ragans. He, Rasmussen, and McClanahan were my most-drafted pitchers this year. So… 2 out 3, shout out to me!
Corbin Burnes and Sandy Alcantara are both not looking like themselves.
Alcantara:
4 GS, 17.1 IP, 7.27 ERA,1.38 WHIP, 17.3% K%, 13.3% BB%
Burnes:
4 GS, 21.1 IP, 4.64 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 18.5% K%, 9.8% BB%, 1.7 HR/9
With Sandy, you’d have to worry that the arm just isn’t what it used to be after the surgery. You could also be thinking that maybe he’s just re-acclimating and he’ll figure it out soon. Both are possible.
With Burnes, I think the BB% and home run issues should go away soon, but the K% decline is something we’ve been worried about for a while.
His SwStr% last year was 14%, this year it is 9.9%.
I think he’ll get right, and I do consider him a buy-low right now, but the more we see of him, the more we start to think he’s not an SP1 for fantasy.
Logan Webb has a 33% K% with a 6% BB%, so he deserves a shout!
That’s two double-digit strikeout games. He didn’t have any last year! Some stat comparisons:
Stat: 2024 → 2025
SwStr%: 9.6% → 12.4%
Strike%: 47% → 49%
Ball%: 34% → 36%
GB%: 57% → 56%
Sinker Use: 40% → 38%
The strikeout rate will come down. The 12.4% SwStr% is way up from last year, but it’s still only about league average. That would suggest a 23% K%. Now, with a guy with command like Webb, it plays up a few points because he gets a ton of called strikes. But no, he’s not a 28%+ K% guy.
The kids are waiting for me to take them to get donuts, but what they don’t know is that I have the very important business first of putting a screenshot of bad luck hitters into this post first.
Here’s everybody with an xwOBA at least 70 points above their wOBA.
Those are your buy lows, if you can pull it off. On the flipside, here are your hitters who have the luckiest values here:
And here’s a SCATTER PLOT.
We also have this same thing for pitchers on the main dashboard.

I am personally enthralled with this new slate analysis app I built. I introduced it yesterday in the slate preview. I’m guessing that most of the people who checked it out opened it on their mobile phone. That’s too bad, because it looks like absolute dog crap on a mobile phone.
But yeah, it’s not designed for mobile phones. Someday, I’ll see if I can make it at least readable on there, but I would tell everybody to use a tablet or a PC to use it.
That is it for this Saturday daily notes. I’m feeling especially joyful and peaceful today, so I’d like to say thank you all for reading and subscribing and interacting with me. Baseball, numbers, jokes, writing, trying to beat other men at predicting the future… few things in life are better.
God Bless!
