So this Mason Miller kid got the call up for the Athletics. He was a top prospect for the Athletics and he’ll start the game today.
The crazy thing about this guy is that he went to freaking Waynesburg University in Greene County, Pennsylvania. Waynesburg is a Division 3 school absolutely not known for its athletics.
It’s also where I went to college! Me!
And look, I’m not here to say that I am a better athlete and person than Mason Miller, but it is at least notable to say that he posted an ERA above 5 at Waynesburg and I broke the all-time Waynesburg record for singles wins.
One day I found all of my coach’s old scorebooks (went back like six years or something) and went through them and summed up every player’s wins just to see if I had more than them. After I discovered that I would soon have more than all of them, I had my coach go to the press (my friends who were journalism majors) to tell them that we had a story to cover here - big JA was about to make history! Those scorebooks were only a fraction of Waynesburg tennis history and nobody ever even fact-checked me, they just printed it - but hey let’s not get too bogged down in the details - I am a legend. I even had my picture on the Athletics Wall of Fame. My buddy Brett and I photoshopped it and put it there ourselves in the middle of the night one time, but again - the details don’t matter.
The point is that Mason Miller definitely knows about me and will be thinking about me in his Major League debut tonight, I know it.
As for the actual athlete at hand here, Miller has a big old fastball and… not much else:
I’m guessing he wasn’t throwing that fastball at Waynesburg. We’re looking at one outing from the guy here, but the truth is we hardly have any minor league data on him at all as he’s thrown just 20.2 innings above rookie ball. He’s been on quite a path to the Majors.
Anyways, it seems very possible that he only has one Major League ready pitch, and that’s simply not going to cut it. But maybe I’m wrong about that, we’ll see tonight. The point is, my expectations are low and I will now start telling everybody that me and this guy were roommates in college.
We saw a good outing from Edward Cabrera yesterday, that’ll happen when he keeps the walk rate below 9%. Chris Sale was also sweet, shout out to you if you held on and started him yesterday.
I didn’t draft any Sale, but I would have kept starting him even after those first few bad starts. If you’ve been following his numbers he still looks pretty dominant, here’s the breakdown on the year:
15.5% SwStr% with a decent walk rate will do just fine. It will probably be a bit of a bumpy ride for Sale, but you’re starting him every time from here on out, I think.
Sadly I’m once again without time to write more. The second edition of breakout hitters is out on RotoBaller, check that out.
If I find some time I’ll tweet some more stuff out about yesterday and the season so far later.
There are a few more things in the free section than there was yesterday. I think I’m just going to kinda move things in and out every day so you never really know what you’re going to get. Sometimes I’ll even let the Magic Formula Qualifiers be free, but not very often! If you want it all every day sign up for the paid membership. Here you go, talk to you later!
