Luis Garcia (the Astros one, that guy) pitched quite well yesterday after plenty of people gave up on him. He is on waivers in my RotoBaller staff league and my opponent in home league benched him. The perils of reacting to small samples!
Baseball is weird, man - don’t react to a few starts! If you think a guy is good today, there’s no reason to not think he’s good two weeks from now. Rein in yourself, do not be a slave to your passions!
Mason Miller proved to have more than just a fastball, but not a ton more. He threw the fastball 63% of the time (99.4 average velo) with a 9.8% SwStr%, and then his slider came in at 22% (11.1% SwStr%), and his cutter at 14% (27.3% SwStr%). Better arsenal than I thought, and I’m sure the Stuff+ numbers are going to pop when they come. But the list of starting pitchers that have had success throwing a fastball more than 50% of the time is a short one. I don’t think we need to both with Miller in standard leagues.
Kyle Bradish came back and pitched really well with six scoreless innings. Six punchies, only one free pass. A 12% SwStr% which is underwhelming but huge positive for Bradish there, and the future seems bright even maybe in the short-term.
Mac-capitalK-enzie Gore walked four more hitters. That’s 14 walks in 21 innings and a 16% BB%. The 29% K% makes that not as horrifying as it usually would be, but it’s still awful terrifying.
Let’s take a look at the top and bottom of the pitcher JA ranks.
Bumgarner just has to go. He got shelled again yesterday and looks completely unfit for the Majors. Brandon Pfaadt pitches tonight in the minors and I think the Snakes have to be thinking about making that switch very, very soon.
Matt Strahm sits at #31 in the ranks and has a 32% K% with a 10% BB% this year. Do the quick subtraction there and yes! That’s a 22% K-BB%. Count it! He gets the pristine spot tonight of getting the Rockies in their first day away from Coors. The issue is that he hasn’t even thrown 75 pitches yet, so the quality start chances would seem to be quite low - but I am streaming that guy.
Speaking of the Rockies, the Pirates just absolutely mopped the Rocky Mountain floor with them over a three-game series and I’m back in. I am a Pirate fan again, people. Call me a fair-weather fan, fine, I’ve already admitted to being one. You cannot criticize a person who has already criticized themself!
The Rockies have a .704 OPS this year (league average is .722). In Coors, they have just a .777 OPS. The teams they’ve played in Coors this year and their OPS:
PIT 1.045
STL .816
WSH .805
Last year, the OPS in Coors was .806, so the Rockies are really underperforming there. Last year away from Coors, the Rockies had a pathetic .620 OPS and yes, they are significantly worse this year. Any time you can get a pitcher with some kind of pulse against the Rockies away from Coors, that’s a viable stream.
One more Pirates note, Oviedo now has a 24.5% K%, a 6.9% BB%, a 15.3% SwStr%, a 54% GB%, and a .259 xwOBA allowed. And his schedule has not been an easy one:
vs. Red Sox
vs. White Sox
@ Cardinals
@ Rockies
Eric Lauer has lost all kinds of velocity this year, so that’s not looking good. He did have a decent start last night giving up just 2 runs in 7.2 innings, but for the year he has a bad 19:8 K:BB ratio so I would just not be bothering with Lauer this year, I think some really bad starts are going to happen.
Yandy Diaz homered again so let’s get an update on that Launch Angle histogram.
The average launch angle is 14.8 degrees and his ground-ball rate is down to 32%. It’s hard to not believe there’s been a change now. He has a 19% Brl%. We always knew that in a universe where Yandy isn’t hitting a ton of ground balls, he would have a great barrel rate given how hard he hits the ball, and he also just doesn’t strike out, so Yandy could be an insane fantasy breakout this year.
That said I would probably sell high to someone who is really believing in the breakout, this feels like a trap.
