MLB Daily Notes - April 24th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
Max Fried is back! He put a complete game shutout on the Marlins.
9 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 6 K, 0 BB
He went for a 15.2% SwTr% and a 50% Strike%, just pounded the zone with a 25% Ball%. The strikeouts weren’t great, and his season K% is now 16.5%, but whatever it’s good to see him get out there with that classic Fried command and put up a big start.
Grayson Rodriguez got pummeled by the Angels
4.2 IP, 11 H, 7 ER, 7 K, 1 BB
He had the whiffs going (17.1% SwStr%) and the Ball% was good at 32.9%. He also only gave up one homer (to Trout), so you wouldn’t have thought this would be a seven-run start. You just have to take your lumps there and keep on starting Grayson.
Bailey Falter was awesome with an 8:2 K:BB and a 16.5% SwStr% in seven strong innings. That makes legitimately no sense but okay. You shouldn’t be considering adding Falter, that’s all I have to say.
And then Erick Fedde turned it around and ripped his best start, probably of his career:
6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 11 K, 0 BB, 17.9% SwStr%
Pretty weird there, here’s the pitch mix:
That big start brought his season SwStr% up to 10.6%, so he’s not a whiff pitcher. The Twins are not a good lineup at this point and they have a ton of strikeout in that lineup, so Fedde took advantage there. His very slow cutter was great and his sinker brought the ground balls and set up his splitter well. He’s not a fantasy pitcher right now, but maybe he can pitch his way into being one in deep leagues if the ground balls keep coming.
Kevin Gausman through 6.2 scoreless innings, but that’s surprising given that he got just four whiffs and his Strike% was a pitiful 40.4%. Just two strikeouts and one walk, very weird for Gausman, but at least he helped your ERA there.
James Paxton is cooked, it appears. Three more walks, his season K% is 12.4% and his season BB% is 19.1%. That’s 11 strikeouts and 17 walks, he’s not doing it, no idea why the Dodgers gave him a contract - but he’s likely on his way out when Buehler returns.
Pablo Lopez immediately ended my DFS hopes last night with my 100% ownership on him. He went just four innings, threw 76 pitches, and gave up three runs on four hits to the White Sox. What the hell man.
More decentness from Luis Severino with a quality start (6 IP, 3 ER, 5:0 K:BB). He’s been just slight above average with the underlying numbers, but he showed great command last night with a 51.6% Strike% and 28.6% Ball%. Nice deep league target there.
Logan Webb is really impressive, he churned out eight more shutout innings and another win. The SwStr% was fine at 14.2% and the K:BB was not great at 4:1, but that’s who Webb is. He’s just a master at avoiding hard contact.
