Yesterday, I refined the JA scores yesterday and wrote up a post to explain them here.
The SB success rate has jumped back up a couple of points in the last few days. We have five players with double-digit steals so far:
Acuna 13
Hoerner 10
Bae 10
Carroll 10
Mullins 10
And Esteury Ruiz (aka Rivermouth Ruiz) is right there at nine after stealing four bases yesterday.
My hitting box score database goes back to 2021, and this is the first time since then that a player has stolen four bases in a single game. I was going to show you everybody who had stolen three bases in a game, but that’s happened 22 times and that is just too much to tell.
PIT 34
CLE 31
OAK 26
BAL 26
CHC 25
ARI 24
NYY 23
NYM 21
MIA 21
Astros 19
Braves 19
The teams not running are the Dodgers (9), Rockies (5), and Twins (2). I really doubt that has to do as much with team philosophy as just who is on the roster.
Stealing bases has certainly helped out the Pirates though. I’ve watched most of the innings they’ve played this year and they really are scoring runs the old-school way. They are in the middle of the league in homers, and I would expect that to trend towards the bottom third given the roster they put on the field, but they are not striking out (20.7%), taking a bunch of walks (9.8%), and then running like mad when they get on.
I’m not sure how I ended up talking about the Pirates again, but while I’m here…
Lots of people are really swooning over the Drew Maggi story. He’s on the front page of MLB.com right now. The TLDR of it all:
After 13 seasons, 1,154 games and 4,494 plate appearances in the Minor Leagues, Maggi was finally going to have his opportunity to step into a Major League batter’s box to enjoy his first at-bat, to take his first swing.
For something close to a decade, this guy knew he was not good enough to be Major League Baseball player, but he just decided to stay in the minor leagues as long as a team would have him. The Pirates threw him a bone this week by giving him the call-up when Reynolds went on the paternity list, but the games they played without Reynolds were too close to waste a PA him, so they even gave him an extra day to get another chance - and it happened last night. It’s a nice gesture from the Pirates, but I’m not really a touchy-feely kinda guy.
I don’t know the guy, and I’m certainly speaking out of turn here - but the whole thing was a little lame. It seems like we’re all treating the guy like he’s some kid. Applauding him for sticking to his dream and finally making it. Except his dream was obviously dead years ago and he didn’t really make it - he just got a pity PA from the team and he’ll be back in the minors by the weekend.
I accept the societal rule that we just shouldn’t tell people how to live their own lives as long as they aren’t intruding on ours. That’s fine. It’s not like Drew Maggi is living off government assistance because he doesn’t want to work. He’s not hurting anybody and he can do whatever he wants - but if my kid ever ends up in minor league baseball I’m giving him like four years to make The Show before I start pushing him towards reality. Okay, thanks for letting me say all of that. Go Bucs!
Freaking Domingo German (aka Sunday Deutschland) did it again with 17 whiffs and a 20.2% SwStr%. For the year, he has a 17.2% SwStr%, that’s the fourth-best mark in baseball for pitchers with at least 4 starts.
deGrom 22.7%
McClanahan 21.9%
Strider 21.3%
German 17.8%
Castillo 17.2%
Lopez 17.1%
Alcantara 15.8%
Strahm 15.8%
Garcia 15.8%
Greene 15.7%
The arsenal update:
415 pitches with an 18%+ SwStr% is no fluke. The curveball is ridiculous. Here are his rows from the “Stuff+ Changes” sheet that paid subs have access to:
That is one of the best pitches in the league, but we should still be a bit concerned with the lack of a strong secondary pitch.
MacKenzie Gore (aka Girl Name Blood) is up there too with 19 whiffs. The next thing on the MacKenzie Gore flow chart is to check the walks, and hey - there were only two of them!
That was his best start of the year by far and it was against the Mets! The Mets must be so confused getting dominated by Josiah Gray (aka Old Testament Black) and MacKenzie Gore on back-to-back days. What a world.
Tanner Bibee (aka Bronze Food Catcher) was the latest addition to rookie standout SP. The rookie SPs have been about as good as the rookie hitters have been bad:
Wow, big rookie coming out hot with the 44% slider usage, who does this guy think he is?
I’ve thought about this a little bit, and to me it makes some sense that pitchers would have an easier transition to the Majors than hitters, generally. The pitcher dictates every play, they start it. So when a pitcher goes from AAA to the MLB, they don’t change anything - they just throw their same pitches and hope that they’re good enough to succeed against the better competition.
For hitters, everything changes. The pitch quality you’re seeing is suddenly like at least 25% better and you have to hit it. The hitter is reacting, the pitcher is not. I’m not sure if the data actually bears this out, but the 2023 anecdote supports my claim and look, I have a Master’s Degree.
Yusei Kikuchi (aka Yusei Kikuchi) in his last three outings:
17.2 IP, 12 H, 2 ER, 20 K, 4 BB
For the year he has a 26.4% K% and 5.7% BB%. The walk rate being low is certainly welcome, and he fits that same Josiah Gray mold that we talked about yesterday - of a pitcher being victimized by allowing hard contact in the past, but like we said - we shouldn’t count that against a pitcher as much as we’re inclined to.
I will need to see more from Kikuchi to believe it, of course, but he’s worth an add in deep leagues, methinks.
Jonah Heim (aka WhaleBelly CoughingNoise) continues to be one of the league’s best offensive catchers.
He’s 27 with a career .672 OPS, so we shouldn’t overreact here. I shallow leagues, you’re probably dropping a quite good catcher to get him - and I’m not sure if I’m to that point yet. Like I have Alejandro Kirk in the home league and I’m not going to dump him for Heim just because of 73 good plate appearances, but in two catcher situations, he’s a must-start, and if you’re hurting for a catcher you should go grab him where available.
Oh no, Josh Lowe (aka… I got nothing) is on the cold hitters list! He has just a 66% contact% since the 17th. Prior to that day, he had a 78% contact rate, so we have trouble here. Which is the real Josh Lowe? Judging by his 67% contact rate last year, I would say it’s more likely the 66% is who he is - and that’s not good!
That said, the Rays have faced some really good pitching in the last 10 days:
They have now faced the third-highest average Stuff+ in the league this year (behind NYY and DET). You can find all of that on the “Pitch Quality Against” tab of the main MLB dashboard.
I added a new “Hit Game Logs” tab to the MLB & MiLB Stats Dashboard yesterday, here’s what that looks like with our current example of Lowe:
Pretty good-looking dashboard if I do say so myself.
Okay, it’s almost 10:00 I spent my whole morning on this! What a fun time.
Oh wait one more thing, I opened up the SubStack chat last night. A bunch of people already jumped in and sent some questions - so check that out and drop a question or comment if you want, I’ll try to get back to them depending on the volume…
