MLB Daily Notes - April 28th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
Not a lot of extra time today with it being Sunday and Trea baby really being on one these days. He has learned to scream every time he isn’t getting something he wants. It’s funny that you don’t have to teach a kid to be jealous or selfish or angry or mean, it just comes so naturally. Sharing and gentleness and the like seem to be learned.
George Kirby went wild AF
7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 12 K, 0 BB
He did the thing again where he comes out ripping 98+mph fastballs early on and then settles down.
This is at least the third time he’s done this, so it seems like a conscious thing. Weird. But anyways, it all worked out perfectly, and he had his best start of the year by my favorite two metrics:
He had almost as many swinging strikes as balls thrown. That’s really something. Nobody has accomplished that feat yet this year, here are ten smallest differentials between swinging strikes and balls though (80 pitches minimum):
Ronel Blanco had a great start in a place that’s way tougher to pitch in than Coors Field, so that’s weird. The Rockies are just such a disaster.
And Jordan Hicks took advantage big time of a sputtering Pirates offense, he didn’t give up a single fly ball and posted a 17% SwStr% and 30% Ball%.
The sinker/splitter combo is nice. It won’t always work, and we’ve seen some lower SwStr% and K% marks from him this year. This start got him to a 13.8% K-BB% on the year, which is pretty mediocre - although it’s a little bit better with the high GB% (58%).
Tanner Bibee dominated the Braves with seven shutout innings and a 9:0 K:BB. That was his first really great start of the year. To me he seemed like a safe SP option this year with moderate upside, and so far he’s shown to be pretty volatile with big upside… but we’ll see where he goes from here. The numbers are fine so far:
Good SwStr%, great slider and changeup, but the fastball had not been good before last night (49% Strike%, 10.8% SwStr% last night). He’s a must-start guy regardless.
And then this weird Ranger Suarez season continued. He now has a 2.39 SIERA with his elite 1.32 ERA
Here are your 4+ GS ERA leaders along with their SIERAs.
And that’s it, I’ve really gotta go - I think Trea Baby has his head stuck under a couch cushion.
