MLB Daily Notes - April 29th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
Your boy has been summoned to jury duty today. And that’s tough, because I am not sure if how far I’m legally allowed to push joking about it on a public platform. Since I’m completely in the dark right now and this is just a summons, I think I’m okay. But i also don’t have much material to use.
The hope is that I just get dismissed right away so I can come back to the basement and continue jamming these numbers into a computer with my cold brew coffee. But a part of me would also like to be a juror on like a quadruple murder plus tax evasion plus conspiracy case. I think I’d be really good at it. I know the judicial system better than most people and have a pretty cool head on my shoulders.
I do think Americans at this point are too dumb to be trusted, but maybe that’s overly-skeptical. But man if I were on trial for something I didn’t do, and I had to trust nine randomly chosen Americans to deliver my fate, I wouldn’t be feeling very good about that. But I suppose a unanimous decision among nine of your peers is better than one judge holding the keys. Judges certainly know the laws and the rules and system better than most citizens, but I’ll take the higher sample size - plenty of corrupt judges out there.
Maybe that’s what I’ll tell the judge right away - hey you’re corrupt and I bet you don’t even know the difference between Swinging Strike Rate and Whiff Rate you idiot - that should get me out of it.
Joey Loperfido got the call up for the Astros. He’ll play some outfield and first base, I guess. The Astros finally don’t have a stacked lineup, and Jose Abreu has been one of the worst hitters in the league for the last two seasons. Here are your hitters with 600+ PA and an OPS below .700 since last season:
Two of those seven Benintendi homers came Saturday - pretty funny.
So, can Loperfido do better? Here are the numbers:
122 PA, .287/.393/.713, 13 HR, 5 SB, 30.3% K%, 13.1% BB%
That’s a massive homer total, in fact it leads all of professional baseball this year by three full homers. His 27.3% Brl% also leads pro ball, but the 30.3% K% is a massive issue as he heads into games facing the best pitching he’s ever seen.
The Contact% isn’t as bad as you’d expect from a 30% K%, it sits at 75%. For comparison, here are the contact rates on the other hitters that have a 30%+ K% down there in AAA:
55%, 56%, 63%, 65%, 66%, 72%, 72%, 71%, 69%
So he’s the highest of the bunch, and well above a lot of those other guys. One of those two 72% marks is White Sox Colson Montgomery, by the way, he’s another top prospect who should make his mark in the Majors this year.
But anyways, Loperfido has put up his numbers by rarely missing on contact. He has 18 barrels, a 44% GB%, a 92.7mph average exit velo, a 106.6 90th-percentile EV, and a fine 11 degree average launch angle.
The skill projection in my model on Loperfido:
28.3% K%, 9.4% BB%, 8.1% Brl%
The model has him as much more of a ground ball hitter than he’s shown this year. That is because he had a 52% GB% last season. He’s dropped that to 46% this year and brought the fly balls up from 27% to 42%. So the truth is somewhere in the middle there, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him fail to lift the ball in the Majors.
It seems Major League pitchers are incredibly good at avoiding parts of the strike zone where hitters can elevate the ball. So Loperfido has a big test ahead of him. I would say let someone else pay the big price for him in a FAAB league, but if it’s a free add situation, I’d say go for it. Maybe he hits enough homers and steals enough bases to matter, given that the contact rate was higher, I could see the K% maintaining around 30-32%, and that’s somewhat overcome-able if you continue to get the ball in the air and hit the ball hard.
Th eone thign to watch with him is that he doesn’t swing much. The AAA in-zone swing rate is 64%, and he is four points below that at 60%. That explains the K% being above the Contact% by expectations, he’s taking a lot of strikes. That has obviously worked out for him, he’s clearly just waiting for strikes that he can drive and not missing when he gets them - but if he gets into 0-2, 1-2 holes in the Majors it’s going to be much tougher to get out of him.
So there’s my Loperfido #analysis.
Dane Dunning had the fifth 10+ strikeout game of his career (since 2021 at least - that’s in 86 total starts). He did that across 5.1 innings, so it wasn’t super efficient - but everything looked great. A 26.1% SwStr%, a 29% Ball% - crazy stuff from a guy that usually pitches to contact.
He’s at 15% and 29% K% on the season now. Really surprising.
2023: 10.5% SwStr%, 46% Strike%, 35% Ball%, 71 Stuff+
2024: 15.0% SwStr%, 46% Strike%, 39% Ball%, 65 Stuff+
There is no discernible difference in the pitch mix, it’s just that all of his pitches have a couple extra points on their SwStr% this year. Not sure that sticks, but he’s a pretty good deep league option right now.
I need to do a little poddy action about xERA - because it’s a very interesting and kind of surprisingly useless stat. I would do that today if it weren’t for the Indiana justice system being so needy.
Framber Valdez came back and put up a solid five innings (two runs, 6:0 K:BB) in that Mexico City park. The Rockies dropped two deuces in their best hitting environment of the century… what a joke.
My hold advice on Brandon Pfaadt paid off in a major way yesterday:
6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 11 K, 0 BB, 17.7% SwStr%, 32.3% Ball%
Wish I would have gone harder on trying to buy low on him. That was masterful.
For the season:
13.1% SwStr%, 49.5% Strike%, 32.4% Ball%, 26% K%, 4% BB%, 40% GB%
The Stuff+ is meh at 103, but he’s a command pitcher with his 106 Location+. That’s the 8th-best Location+ for qualified starters:
Mikolas 111
Eflin 110
Ryan 109
Paddack 108
Kirby 108
Jones 106
Wheeler 106
Pfaadt 106
Castillo 105
Skubal 105
Speaking of Jared Jones, he came back to earth in a Major way, it was almost scary to see…
5 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3 K, 1 BB, 8.4% SwStr%, 47% Strike%, 33.7% Ball%
Just a 6.5% SwStr% on his 31 four-seamers and a 3.7% mark on his 27 sliders. He was pitching on short rest, I’m not sure if that had something to do with it but he did not have his usual pitch quality. If he comes out next week (at home against the Rockies) and looks really sharp again, I would say it wouldn’t be crazy at all to shop him around. There’s a real possibility that he just can’t maintain this for long. There’s the injury concern, of course, but there’s also the guarantee that the Pirates will limit him in some ways, and again there’s a possibility he just becomes more of a “good” starter if he eases off the stuff a bit. Kinda feels like a ticking time bomb to hold onto any starter throwing the ball this hard…
I wonder if we won’t just end up with all teams going to a six-man rotation in the next five years or something. Wouldn’t be surprising at all. Maybe the league will even expand the rosters another spot or two to let teams do this with pitcher health in mind. We could quickly see the new league leaders making 27 starts instead of 32 and throwing 170 innings instead of 200. Seems like things are moving in that direction.
Although that kind of goes against the purpose of those veteran mediocre-stuff pitchers who are there to eat up some innings. Would a team really want Miles Mikolas starting a game in a six-man rotation when you have much better, younger arms ready to go? I don’t know. I’m going to move on now, who cares about this.
Kevin Gausman put up another start that was great in the box score:
7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 5 K, 0 BB
But not so good in my JA box:
93 pitches, 8.6% SwStr%, 50.5% Strike%, 26.9% Ball%
That’s a ton of strikes, but not a lot of whiffs. His 2023 Stuff+ was 126, and he’s at that same exact mark in 2024, so that’s a good sign. Let’s compare the strike stuff at the pitch level.
2023:
2024:
He has lost a tick on the four-seamer, but increased the SwStr% and maintained the Strike% there. The losses have come on the splitter. It’s also slower (I don’t think that matters), and the SwStr% is down from 22% to 14%.
There’s an eight-point decrease in Stuff+ on the pitch (134 to 126), and the Location+ has actually improved from 106 to 110.
So I don’t know what to say. I think he’ll still be good this year, but I’m a little concerned about the lack of SwStr% - although there’s no reason to be confident that the whiffs won’t come back. I suppose Gausman would still be in my top 10 SPs rest of season.

If we were just worried about per-start basis, Jared Jones would definitely show up here - I just can’t trust the workload. So if someone will give you one of these dudes for Jones, I think you do it, I just don’t think anyone will actually do that.
That’s the paradox of how my brain works in fantasy, and how I think everybody’s brains should. If a player is doing surprisingly well, you should think about getting rid of them. If a player is doing surprisingly poorly, you should think about trading for them. If you do that over and over again you’ll certainly end up on top in the aggregate. The law of regression to the mean and the law of large numbers.
Erick Fedde is pitching surprisingly well with his 2.60 ERA and 3.25 SIERA.
He now has 20 strikeouts in his last two starts and a 27.5 K% on the year with a solid 6.3% BB%. The SwStr% and Ball% certainly don’t back those numbers up, so he’s going to be heading downward soon - but he could still very well end up serviceable. It’s also weird to see his GB% being so low. He had like a 200% GB% in Korea last year, like the ball would split in half on contact and both halves would go on the ground. But if you’re showing me these inputs and nothing else:
10.9% SwStr%, 39% Ball%, 42% GB%
I’m going to call that a pitcher that is about to get rocked. Not sure you can sell high on Fedde… but just think twice before you lock him in your lineups after these two big outings.
I only have time to talk about one hitter, and that is Tyler Stephenson. He continues to barrel the ball a ton, and he’s hitting his way to be a top-ten catcher option in fantasy leagues.
Any time your Brl% is near your K%, you’re cooking. So there you go.
Now I have to go to the bathroom, drop a Colorado Rockies, and go serve my country. And please, don’t feel the need to send me bouquets and chocolates in gratitude for my selfless service of this great land we all live on. I’m not doing it for the credit and for the fame, I’m doing it because I’m afraid of getting fined for not showing up.
