MLB Daily Notes - April 6th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
A few of the games from yesterday didn’t get into the savant data, so we’re missing some stuff in the reports below and on the dashboards and whatnot, but I’m just going to not worry about it today, everything should get patched up on the load tomorrow.
Spencer Strider is getting an MRI on his elbow, which is terrifying. And this was after us finding out about Eury Perez heading for Tommy John surgery. It’s been a rough early season for the game’s best pitchers.
Trevor Story also had a bad shoulder injury last night, he was an MLB DW darling in drafts, so I’m sorry about that.
The AA, A+, and A seasons started last night, so the MiLB Statcast dashboard is fully alive. It has advanced metrics on all minor league games. We still only have Statcast in AAA and in the Florida State League (A ball), so you don’t get exit velocities and barrels and the like, but you do get SwStr%, Strike%, and Ball% data for pitchers and good plate discipline stuff on hitters.
The link to that dashboard has been added at the bottom of this post (below the paywall). This is one of my best resources, and I don’t believe there’s anything else quite like it on the Internet. There are definitely more people developing this kind of stuff every year, so I’ll probably get surpassed at some point. First mover advantage though, right?
Again, these first few lists are incomplete. I only got six games yesterday:
And everything will be refreshed and ready once they fix it, probably tomorrow.
Luckily we got that Jared Jones data though, sheesh! Another amazing start for him.
A 26.3% SwStr% over 80 pitches is just incredible, almost nobody can do that. And the elite ball rate too once again is him showing great command. If this is really who the guy is, he’s going to be one of the top pitchers in the entire league. Crazy stuff. We were on him all winter, but I didn’t see THIS coming.
What got him were two solo homers, and I think that’s going to be a thing he has to deal with. Four-seamers and sliders get hit in the air a lot, and he keeps a lot of his fastballs up in the zone, so while it’s a good trade-off for having that elite stuff, the homers are going to come. He was beat by Grayson Rodriguez, who wasn’t as dominant but was more effective overall.
Good but not great stuff there, good to see the high pitch count and him pitching very deep into that game (6.1 innings).
Dylan Cease is off to a really nice start as a Padre. He has a 30% K% and a 9% BB% through two starts on a 47.6% Strike% and a 38.5% Ball%. That’s a high Ball%, but you’ll have that with him.
Bobby Miller got KO’d in the second inning. He didn’t have command with a horrid 45% Ball%.
I wouldn’t change anything on him, you’re starting him every time, but it would be nice if he could actually put together a few great starts in a row, because he hasn’t done that yet in his short career.
Michael Conforto had two more barrels yesterday and is now at a 27% Brl% with an OPS near 1.300.
He was a borderline player at his expectation coming into the year, so if he’s newly healthy right now and beating that, he can be rostered. Just don’t start thinking you’ve got yourself an elite bat again (or do, whatever floats your boat bro).
The prop betting tracker is running and we’re up a completely and totally elite amazing unreal 1.8 UNITS on the year. It’s doing these props:
Pitcher K
Pitcher BB
Pitcher hits allowed
Hitter K
Hitter hits
Those two hits ones are new, added Thursday. I’m not trying to be a betting bro, but it will be interesting to see if my model can beat the books this year.
The one prop today I have to recommend is my boy Garrett Whitlock under 1.5 walks! Love that guy. George Kirby lite.
Okay, onward to the automation!
