It’s another travel day, so things aren’t quite as I’d like on a Monday. I’d like to spend a lot of time writing these notes and also record a podcast looking back at the weekend, but I cannot pull all of that off today.
But I will do my best!
It seems like we’ve really got something with Kris Bubic.
That’s a 16:3 K:BB in 12.2 innings on a 16% SwStr% with a 31% Ball%. These are elite numbers and you don’t see too many guys able to do stuff like that even in a two-game stretch
All four of his main pitches have earned great strike rates, and he’s getting a ton of whiffs with the four-seamer, sweeper, and changeup.
It’s still early. Maybe there’s a lot of luck in here, but Bubic is a must-own right now. Especially since he’ll get a lot of soft matchups in this division. There is not a single imposing lineup in that AL Central.
Chase Dollander debuted yesterday. He did alright.
5 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 6 K, 1 BB, 2 HR
Can we call that a Coors Quality or something? He gave up two homers, the 7.20 ERA and 1.60 WHIP are obviously terrible, but I think the 6:1 K:BB and getting through five innings makes for an encouraging first start.
He has a huge fastball at 97.8mph, and he threw it for strikes at an elite rate. That’s very nice to see.
Maybe there are questions about his secondaries? The fastball, no matter how good, can’t carry you as a starter in the Majors. I don’t think the scouts and whatnot had worries about his other pitches, but the cutter wasn’t very good in that first go. Next up, he’ll get the Padres in San Diego. That’s another tough task, but I do think Dollander’s stuff and upside deserves a roster spot for now.
Drew Rasmussen has been limited to five innings in his first two starts. It’s possible that stays true all year. But he’s pitched great so far, allowing just one run in his ten innings on an 8:1 K:BB.
If you really need quality starts from your pitchers, Rasmussen might not be your guy. But I remain very confident that the ratios will be great.
Jack Kochanowicz now has eight strikeouts. I would have thought that would take him four starts to get, but he’s done it in two! He has an 18.6% K%!
The problem yesterday was that he walked three Guardians, so the WHIP wasn’t good, and he only made it five innings. But I’d say it’s an encouraging start to the season. You aren’t using Koch in a 12-teamer, but for a deeper league situation, there is a real hope that he can be a positive in the ratios. Or it could all go horribly, both are possible.
Robbie Ray reminded us about his walk issues. He got through six innings giving up just one run, but he was playing with fire allowing four hits and five walks.
The strikeouts also weren’t there, so the early numbers looks pretty terrifying on Ray (13.6% K%, 13.6% BB%). I’m not sure what to think about that. I think you just keep starting him every time out for now, but he’ll need to get some strikeouts soon for us to feel confident.
Matthew Boyd threw six scoreless on Saturday:
6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 5 K, 1 BB
He’s an underrated arm. The whiffs haven’t been there early on (10.7% SwStr%), but a 49% Strike% and 34% Ball% are pretty good.
There might be issues with this fastball. He’s been known to give up a lot of homers in the past, and a 93mph fastball with just an 8.2% SwStr% is a pitch that can hit out of the ballyard. But the park is decent for home run suppression and I do think the whiffs come up at some point.
Boyd is like a 12-team streamer, and he’s probably good enough for 15-team leagues while he’s healthy.
The two best starts of the weekend came from veterans who were not drafted in your leagues.
Andrew Heaney
7 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 10 K, 1 BB
Chris Bassitt
6.2 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 9 K, 0 BB
I didn’t want any part of Bassitt this year, and I still don’t. Heaney was half-decent last year. I don’t think it’s crazy to grab him in 15-teamers, but I’d still be looking for way more upside than what Heaney offers in standard leagues. Pittsburgh was a good landing spot for him. That park is pretty friendly to left-handed fly ball pitchers.
Eduardo Rodriguez struck out twelve Nationals, so that was strange.
5 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 12 K, 1 BB
He got hit hard between those strikeouts, and the SwStr% was just 12%! He got a ton of timely called strikes. I’m not budging on E-Rod, he’s not a fantasy league pitcher.
Cristopher Sanchez took on the Dodgers. He gave up four runs, but piled on nine more strikeouts to his early-season total.
The SwStr% is now at an elite 16.6% with a better-than-average 34% Ball%. The GB% isn’t through the roof at this point, but I think that will happen.
The sinker is really hard to hit for extra bases, and the changeup and slider are both great. The sky is the limit for Sanchez this year, it seems.
Jackson Jobe could not take advantage of the White Sox matchup, he went just five innings on a 4:3 K:BB.
The 7:7 K:BB in nine innings early on in two elite matchups really makes it tough to believe in him. He doesn’t look like a strikeout pitcher right now.
Maybe he’ll button up the command a bit and earn a few more strikeouts, but the name value of this guy has people thinking he’s a 27%+ K%, and he’s not that. I don’t think you’ll want to be starting him in standard leagues.
Bryce Miller has struggled out of the gate.
The pristine command isn’t there yet. I wouldn’t change anything, just keep starting him, don’t fall for any buy-low offers yet. I think he’ll be fine. Maybe he needs to edit down the pitch mix a bit, he’s thrown eight different pitches and six above 5% usage.
The four-seamer has been his best pitch in his young career, but he’s not throwing it as much early on. That’s a little strange and something to monitor. The velo on it is down a little bit. The logical expectation would be that he gets back to who he was last year.
It seems like a lot of guys are struggling with command early on. The league BB% is at 9.3%, that’s more than a point above what we’ve seen the past few years. The K% is right on pace at 22.7%.
It’s looking like Kris Bubic is the early leader for “breakout fantasy SP of the year”. One guy I’m watching closely this week is Shane Smith. Last year in the minors:
16 GS, 94 IP, 29.6% K%, 7.6% BB%, 0.57 HR/9
The guy has an insane changeup, apparently. He threw 73 pitches in his first start. He didn’t have a great line, but did put up a 15.1% SwStr% with a 60% GB%.
He’ll make a couple of starts this week. It’s a risky move to start him, but the stuff is there for him to be pretty good.
Wilyer Abreu leads the league in OPS. He’s at .483/.583/.897 with three homers on a ridiculous 11% K% and 19% BB%. He’s a platoon guy, but he had a successful rookie season last year against righties. This is 36 PAs, but maybe he’s gotten even better. If he keeps smashing, he’ll be in the lineup 3-5 times a week depending on the schedule. I think he’s a nice add in 12-team leagues where you can change your lineup daily.
Logan O’Hoppe has homered in four straight. He has slashed .345/.367/.862 in 30 PAs, but he does have a strikeout issue (33% K%, 66% Contact%). So the batting average might not be phenomenal, but he does have a ton of power, especially for a catcher.
Some other early-season standout hitters under 50% owned on Yahoo:
Jordan Walker still has a 57% GB% and a 67% Contact%, so there might be some struggles upcoming, but he’s hitting the ball hard early on and playing a lot.
Jacob Wilson finally struck out and now has a 5.4% K% ont he year with no walks. He’s going to be putting a ton of balls in play, and he’s at least shown that ability to earn some barrels (5.7% Brl%). You could be looking at a .300 hitter with 8-12 homers.
Ke’Bryan Hayes and Isiah Kiner-Falefa are a little extra interesting since the Pirates are running wild on the bases. IKF has four steals and Hayes has two. Hayes has also homered already with a 9.7% Brl%.
Michael Conforto (.276/.400/.621, 2 HR) and Spencer Torkelson (.324/.439/.618, 2 HR) are also looking like guys who can help you in some power production off the waiver wire. I’d rather have Conforto, but Torkelson is checking some boxes early on.
I think that’ll do it for the notes today, time to wrangle some kids and get home.
