MLB Daily Notes - April 7th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
Reid Detmers is doing it again. He struck out a dozen Red Sox last night and now has a 20.9% SwStr% on the young season.
A 23% SwStr% on the four-seamer is the main reason for the success. Nobody can actually do that for long, but if he’s truly improved the fastball this year, that will be huge for him. Last year, that fastball had a 10.2% SwStr% and a 49% Strike%, both mediocre numbers. So if he can set up the slider well, he’ll take a big step forward. He should be rostered right now.
And then Ryan Feltner randomly pops off in Coors and wins the top spot on the algo ranks. He earned 18 whiffs with a 53.3% Strike% and fired off a ten-strikeout quality start at home. Very weird stuff. Last season he posted a 5.81 ERA and a 1.68 WHIP with a 5% K-BB%, so we don’t really need to talk about him. Baseball is weird, man.
Brandon Pfaadt gave up eight hits and five earned runs, but did post a huge 23% SwStr% and 51% Strike%. For the year, he has a 13:1 K:BB, so I would absolutely be holding him or jumping at him if someone cuts. Better things should be in store.
Bryce Miller was huge with seven scoreless on just 78 pitches. That was the second-best pOUT (pitches/out) of the season:
The four-seam usage is under 40% this year from the heights of last of 60%+. That’s almost too low I think, he may have over-corrected!
The fastball is an awesome pitch for him, but I guess since he now has this very good splitter (that’s impressive enough in itself to add that so quickly), he doesn’t need to go overboard on it. I think Miller is going to be one of the top pitchers in the league very soon.
The bad news:
From below:
Kevin Gausman's FF velo (29 pitches) DOWN -3.2mph to 91.4
Doesn’t seem like either of these guys is quite right. Gausman’s arsenal yesterday:
Everybody is almost expecting surgery for him now with all of the recent news. Strider could be heading under the knife, and Shane Bieber also suddenly needs it.
Do I have anything to say about all of the “WHAT IS CAUSING SO MANY PITCHER INJURIES” thing? I mean yes, of course, tons! But it’s Sunday. I’ll just say that
Who knows
The trend might not even really exist
There are more people complaining about the speculators than there are speculators
The automation is really coming together below.
A quick note: I will not be writing any extra stuff after the automated portion starts. I will keep all of my additional thoughts and analyses at the top so it’s easier to digest.
So if you’re not interested in the automatic reports, you can just stop reading once you see “Pitcher Reports”. If you don’t care about my analysis, you can skip right to that point. Thanks to Will for the tip, it’s a very good idea.
All 30 SPs are ranked in this first part, which I kind of like, but it’s giving you headaches let me know, I can cut it down to a top 10 and link to a file or something.
That’s it for me, happy Sunday! God bless you all.
