The deadline has come and gone. People were really raving about it, saying it was one of the greatest MLB trade deadlines they could remember. I don’t really get that myself, it was fine I guess, I mean a lot happened at the end there. But it didn’t seem like anything all that special to me.
The stuff coming out about the Padres trading away their entire farm system is funny. They really did gut it.
All of that to bring in
→ Ryan O’Hearn
→ Ramon Laureano
→ JP Sears
→ Mason Miller
→ Nestor Cortes
→ Will Wagner
They are certainly a better MLB team now than they were before, but I don’t know, that’s a ton of prospects to give up for that return. There’s only so much a relief pitcher (even an elite one) can do for you, and it’s like O’Hearn and Laureano are game-breakers.
I’m trying to get Grok 4 to give me a full table with all of the details covered about players in and players out, that’s running now so we’ll see what it comes up with.
I thought the Astros did some really interesting things. They brought back Carlos Correa, which was a bit of a surprise honestly. That is going to cost them a lot of money, I believe, and Correa will be playing third base for them. But everybody likes a homecoming story, right? Except, I guess, all of those people who hate the Astros because of their cheating scandal.
Correa can still hit. He’s on a .291/.345/.417 slash line with six homers since May began (.355 xwOBA, .293 xBA). It’s a slight park upgrade for him, I think, and there could be some re-invigoration coming back to Houston to a division leading team. I don’t know, that story makes me feel good inside.
They also added Jesus Sanchez, which is pretty interesting. Sanchez was one of these big-time prospects coming up, and he’s been a fine Major Leaguer so far but has never had that breakout season we all thought he might. He’s slashing .256/.318/.420 this year with 10 homers in 336 PA. The K% has really improved for him (down to 21%).
He’s an above-average hitter this year. He will almost surely continue in a platoon role. He’s slashed .283/.345/.466 with nine of his ten homers this year against righties. Against lefties, he’s at .130/.190/.204 in a small sample. It’s pretty clear what Sanchez is good for on the baseball field.
The Astros did not add a pitcher. It was looking like they’d grab Dylan Cease from the Padres, but that didn’t come to fruition. And now they’re sitting here with the same mediocre pitching staff. I think that will hold them back in the postseason, but if they get Yordan Alvarez fully back and healthy, they could be a really tough lineup to face.
Okay, here’s the Grok table:
That’s basically impossible to read for you, I bet. We also have that classic problem with Excel not being able to interpret the non-English characters. So we have things showing like José Buttó, which is really funny to me.
I remember back in 2020-2021 at the peak of overly sensitive political correctness, the fantasy baseball liberal scolds were yelling at people who wouldn’t put the accents and tildas and business on the player names. And I thought that was a pretty ridiculous expectation. My keyboard doesn’t have the n with the tilda on it so I can easily write out Ronald Acuña Jr.
Although, I do know that there is some ALT key plus number combination that would get it for me. I know that because I remember being a 12 year old and being obsessed with showing people that you could generate an upside down question mark by hitting ALT+2+6+8. That’s in my memory, I’m not actually sure if that’s the right combination. But let’s find out.
♀
Shoot! What is that thing? A chromosome or something right? Maybe it’s ALT+1+6+8
¿
Okay YEAH there we go. Close! So if you’re every board and typing on a PC QWERTY keyboard, you can hold down alt and jam a few random numbers and see what happens. That’s what I did for fun as a kid.

Man I love computers.
Looks like Grok couldn’t quite figure out which prospect the Blue Jays traded for Bieber so it just went with “Stephen”
Oh actually that’s the guys’ last name.
The first-place Blue Jays sent right-handed pitching prospect Khal Stephen, a second-round draft pick from Mississippi State, to the Guardians in the trade, which was announced Thursday.
It was a fun day as usual, although I had to watch it all with one eye from Lake Michigan, which was fun. My kids are all at least 2.5 years old now, which makes going places actually somewhat easy and enjoyable. Going anywhere with a baby is rough, and before this year my wife and I had at least one child under two years old dating back to December 2018. So I feel somewhat freed. The next step is just getting these two boys to want to follow the trade deadline along with me.
The Mets and Yankees loaded up their bullpens. And there in lies the fantasy baseball impact here. It was all about the bullpens. So let’s focus in there. Here’s what Roster Resource is saying about the bullpen situations for the many teams that made a change this week.
The Twins burned it all down, man. They traded their three best relievers. I guess the Cardinals did something similar, but the Twins went from one of the best bullpens in the league to one of the worst, probably. Duran, Jax, and Varland all see-ya-later.
The guys to add right now if you’re looking for some saves, in order of priority:
Cade Smith, CLE (it’s probably too late, and this doesn’t have to do with the deadline, but Clase is gone for at least the month of August and Smith is very good)
Randy Rodriguez, SF
JoJo Romero, STL
Dennis Santana, PIT
Cole Sands, MIN
Phil Maton, TEX
Griffin Jax, TB
Jose Ferrer, WSH
I didn’t put an Athletic there. That one seems to be a tough one. Perkins has a couple of saves lately, but he’s still stretched out as a longer relief guy, so I sort of doubt they make him a one-inning traditional closer. But the other guys (Kelly and Newcomb) aren’t very good, so we’ll have to wait and see what they do. They don’t win a lot of games anyways, and their pitching staff got even worse yesterday so I don’t think they’ll be putting many saves up in these last two months.
The standout to highlight from yesterday was Cole Young and this 470 foot bomb he hit.
My goodness! I wish we had videos and Statcast data going back to like 2010. Cameron Maybin hit this homer as a Marlin at PNC Park at a game I was at. He went deep into the second level of bleachers in left field. I didn’t know that was possible at the time. I think it was the longest home run I’ve ever seen in my life. These kinds of crank jobs really wake your senses. Something so beautiful about an elite baseball player uncorking on a ball at the perfect angle.
I think there might be baseball in heaven just because of the awe inspired here.
Cole Young is somewhat interesting.
.247/.304/.356, 19% K%, 6.8% Brl%, .242 xBA, .303 xwOBA
Okay, so those numbers aren’t that interesting. But he has a nice 28% FB% and 22% Air Pull% and he’s gotten better and better as the year has gone on:
He has pulled 7 of his 8 barrels. He’s 22 years old. When I was 22 years old I couldn’t go yards in a little league park. And honestly I still probably can’t. I do some hit some tanks with the pitching machine in the backyard though. I have these trees that are really tall so it makes the fly balls I hit look more majestic in a way. My wife gets really excited when I bust out the pitching machine.
Here’s Cole Young’s minor league numbers:
A career .461 SLG down there with a pretty weak home run rate. But we’re talking about a guy who wasn’t allowed to drink alcohol before last year.
Looks like his bat speed is kinda crappy:
This kind of situation is about the only time I’d be looking at bat speed. Just when we’re looking at players with very small MLB sample sizes, trying to figure out what kind of power upside they might have.
That’s the one thing that popped on Colson Montgomery when he got to the show. For now, we don’t have bat speed data in AAA, so we really discover some things about a guy after he’s played a week or so in the league.
C-Mont has elite bat speed. The problem is that bat speed doesn’t take you very far by itself. It’s useless unless you’re also swinging the bat at the right time in the right place. Riley Adams and Jordan Walker are firmly in the top ten in bat speed and yet they don’t do squat.
Will that be how Colson ends up? Quite possibly, but at least you can say that he does have power potential.
Vinnie Pasquantino shows up below as the L15 leader in xwOBA OE.
He is all over the notes today. He’s an MFQ, a super ultra mega hot hitter, and a Brl% improver! These things are all pretty correlated, but it’s good news nonetheless. Pasquantino is probably a bit underappreciated. He’s having a solid season. He’s just one of these guys who comes up a little bit short in roto fantasy leagues because of the lack of SB & HR production. But he’s on his way to a 25-ish homer season with a solid slash line and steadiness.
And there’s just something to be said for steadiness in life.
That will do it, we have a big Friday night slate to break down and play!
I’m also about to launch a fantasy football Substack. I think. As if I need more things to do! But I always find myself doing a bunch of fantasy football stuff each fall anyways because I get real excited about it, and fantasy football is freaking fun. I’ve just attached it onto things here at MLB DW in the past, but I think it’s right to seperate it. A lot of you don’t care at all about it, so I just end up spamming you all fall and winter.
And yeah, this gives me the opportunity to put a stamp on it, make it official, and make some extra CASH. I’m going to charge for it. And I might actually charge like $20/month or something a bit more substantial since I suspect it will be a much smaller crowd.
Listen to my idea, hear me out. This is not me all of a sudden pretending to be a football expert. I’m not that, and I don’t really want to be. It’s going to called Follow The Money Fantasy Football (FTMFF). It will be me doing what I do best, grabbing data and examining it. We’ll be tracking the markets, tracking to see what other people are saying with their money. That’s probably the best way to predict the future anyways, take the wisdom of the crowd (and in this case, the wisdom of the crowd with skin in the game).
I am even going to generate weekly projections that come entirely from the sports book lines. This will be quite easy for me to do, and I’m surprised that more people don’t do it! So if DraftKings says over 265.5 yards for Patrick Mahomes for a -110 price, we can turn that into a projection of something like 265.5 yards. And then we can get all of that business and turn it into a fantasy point projection. It will be fun, and I think it will end up being pretty accurate too.
So keep an eye out on that if you’re a fantasy football guy. It will be super laid back and I’ll do plenty of my own writing and podcasting and stuff there in my usual way, but probably with even less seriousness than you get here.
Don’t worry, I will not slow on the fantasy baseball stuff. This comes first, and we’ll have a full, totally normal baseball offseason here with the crazy detailed team previews coming out all winter long leading up to spring training.
For now, goodbye!
