Pitchers - Yesterday
There weren’t a ton of standout pitching performances yesterday, which was predictable given the state of things that we talked about in the DFS preview yesterday.
But Jordan Montgomery was impressive with nine strikeouts in six innings against the Angels. He had a 17.6% SwStr% mostly driven by the changeup (24% SwStr%) and curveball (32%). Great stuff from him after an overall somewhat disappointing season. He now sits with a 3.30 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP - so that’s actually a quite good ERA but the WHIP and strikeouts haven’t been very good (128 strikeouts in 139 innings). It’s certainly a plus to have that Rangers lineup behind him now, so he’s obviously a must-start guy in fantasy.
Logan Allen also had another quite good start with six scoreless innings against the Reds, he struck out seven and walked three. But it was a 30.4% K% and a 17.2% SwStr%. The reason to be concnerd with him day to ay is the walk rate. He’s walked 13 in his last four starts and has a 9.4% BB% for the year. 9.4% isn’t too bad, but it’s rising, and he doesn’t blow you away with the strikeouts at 24%. So he’s fine, but that’s about all I can say.
Luis Severino wasn’t quite as bad as we thought he would be against the Braves. He gave up five runs in four innings, so yeah - that’s bad, but only three of them were earned and he went for five strikeouts. The Braves stack really didn’t work in DFS, but that’s really the only point of this - nobody is starting Luis Severino in fantasy probably ever again.
Bryce Elder got it together after giving up ten earned runs in his prior two starts.
He went seven scoreless against the Yankees with just one hit allowed, but just a 3:3 K:BB. The 13.8% SwStr% was better than normal, but he didn’t have much command with a 38% Ball%.
I still wouldn’t start the guy down the stretch, but I know a lot of you will - and that’s fine, it’s clearly worked out way more often than not this year.
Cristian Javier was once again a disaster with a 4.2 IP, 4 ER, 2:1 K:BB line. The 9.5% SwStr% was once again extremely low and he only earned a 42% Strike%. He’s gotta be in the top 3 biggest busts of the 2023 season. Please cut him if you haven’t yet.
Jack Flaherty showed his true colors to Orioles fans who had gotten a 16:4 K:BB and 4 ER in 11 innings from him in his first two starts in the black and orange. He gave up seven earned runs on four hits and four walks in just three innings against the Padres. That’s what Flaherty does! And it’s a good reminder that teams don’t just fix guys overnight. In fact, it’s pretty rare that a team will just pick up a guy and fix them at all - certainly, it happens (Gerrit Cole among many others), but most of the time a guy pitching badly for a long time can’t be fixed because they just don’t have the physical abilities to succeed as a Major League pitcher - an extremely difficult job.
Flaherty is probably just who Flaherty has always been, and shame on you if you thought you’d get a different guy just because he changed teams!
Emerson Hancock ruined plenty of DFS nights, he was somewhat chalky and went for -2 fantasy points. Here’s the data on him for his first two MLB starts:
The good news is the 53% GB% and the 33% Ball%, but the bad news is… everything else.
We don’t do a lot of PIE CHARTS here because they are stupid. But here’s one:
The Strike% is right at that league average of 47%, and the Ball% is significantly less than (better than) the average. But the lack of balls isn’t turning into a lot of strikes, it’s turning into a very high BIP%. The league average BIP% is 17%, meaning 17% of pitches get hit into play - and Hancock is way above that. His SwStr% is awful, so he’s just been very easy to hit, so he’s an easy drop if you took a shot on him in fantasy this year.
Going wayyy down to A ball, first-overall pick Paul Skenes debuted! I don’t think there’s anything to say about one inning in A ball, but it happened - and now you can see some of that data on the MiLB Statcast dashboard:

Pitcher/Pitch Trends
Ashcraft velo was way up:
It’s always interesting to me when a guy throws a slider harder. I would think that has as much to do with a conscious decision rather than just arm health - but I could be very much wrong about that. Since the sinker velo was up as well, maybe he was just feeling better yesterday - or maybe he just decided to go for it - or both, I don’t know! But it happened!
Luis Severino also ramped it up against that imposing lineup.
The Pirates might be tinkering with their new guy Bailey Falter. Here’s his pitch mix with the Phillies and then with the Pirates separated by a →
FF: 54% → 41%
CU: 24% → 24%
SL: 10% → 23%
CH: 9% → 2%
SI: 3% → 10%
More sinkers, fewer four-seamers, and a lot more sliders. Seems wise to me to try to change things with a guy who hasn’t been successful in the Majors. I doubt it will work for them, and it hasn’t been a good three starts for Falter with the Pirates with a 9.5% SwStr% and a 45% Strike%, but the Pirates could really use some competent pitching so I applaud them for trying something here.
Bobby Miller had a good box score result yesterday (6 IP, 1 H, 1 ER) without a ton of goodness under the hood (4 K, 10.8% SwStr, 42% Strike%).
He has been bailing on the sinker in favor of the four-seamer:
It hasn’t worked super well for him yet with just a 15% K-BB% and a low 11.4% SwStr%, but he’s been serviceable so far and has limited hard contact (46% GB%, .293 xwOBA, .662 OPS).
Most of the league’s best teams are really struggling with their starting rotations right now, so the playoffs will be pretty interesting to watch.
The Rays rotation has just been decimated by injury, the Braves really only have one super reliable arm right now in Fried, and that’s assuming that what we saw Monday was just a one-off. The Dodgers have their worst rotation in years, although they could get Urias going well and get Buehler back and that could make a difference. The Astros are in okay shape but it’s nothing like they’ve had in the last few years either.
The best rotations right now, in my view, would be the Twins and Brewers, and neither of them have very good lineups. The Rangers are probably in this conversation as well now with Scherzer and Montgomery looking good, and then Heaney-Dunning-Gray + Eovaldi if he comes back is a nice back-end as well. So the Rangers to me are the team most equipped to take this whole thing down right now, but the playoffs are random and a lot can change in seven weeks. It will be fun to watch!
