Pitchers - Yesterday
Just when you thought that Charlie Morton, Reid Detmers, and MacKenzie Gore were cooked - they totally redeem themselves!
Gore:
6.1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 51.8% Strike%, 34.1% Ball%
It’s all about the command with Gore, and he had it last night in Boston. He has had some really great stretches of starts this year and overall he’s been pretty decent. But he’s one of these lefties that just can’t find the consistency (at least not yet), so it’s a bumpy road along the way. But if you had to choose, I would probably let it ride with him and just start him the rest of the year - there’s a good chance the good outweighs the bad.
Morton:
6 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 10 K, 1 BB, 16% SwStr%, 52.1% Strike%, 35.1% Ball%
After he had 51% Ball% in his last start, he bounced back in a big way with just a huge start there against the Yankees. The command came back and the whiffs were up. He’s a bit ahead of Gore I’d say, so you’re still starting him.
Detmers:
7.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 5 K, 4 BB, 8.3% SwStr%, 41.7% Strike%, 40.7% Ball%
Little bit of weirdness here. He was pretty terrible from a strike-ball perspective, but he kept the ball away from the barrel and limited the Rangers to just one hit. I’m not encouraged by this start, but it worked.
Jon Gray threw for a 41.3% Strike% and a 37% Ball% which is quite bad, it was just a 4:2 K:BB on 92 pitches, but he did get through 7 innings with just one run allowed. Lots of pitcher luck in that game in Texas!
Kevin Gausman was frighteningly bad:
5.1 IP, 7 HR, 5 ER, 4 K, 3 BB
His four-seamer went for a 6.3% SwStr% and a 54% Strike%, but the splitter just wasn’t working with an 8% SwStr% and a .582 xwOBA. He’s been surprisingly consistent with the splitter over the last several years, but it is still a volatile pitch, and on any given night if he doesn’t have the “feel” (I hate talking about FEEL, but here we are) for it, things can go sour. He is so reliant on that pitch, here’s the breakdown for the year:
You can see that’s the main source of the strikeout with the 21% SwStr%, and it also generates a very nice 58% GB% when it is put in play. If baseball somehow suddenly banned splitters, Gausman would be a pretty bad pitcher. This is all to say, don’t worry about Gausman - he’s been putting up great numbers for several years relying on the splitter, so there’s no reason to react to a one-off start every once in awhile.
Matthew Liberatore tricked a few of you out there, I know he did. After dominating the Rays last week, he came into a matchup with Oakland and was certainly streamed a bunch because of it - and he gave up ten hits and five earned runs in 4.1 innings.
For the year he has a 41.6% Strike% which is just pathetic. The only pitchers with 10+ GS and a Strike% worse than that:
Adam Wainwright 39.5%
Zach Davies 39.7%
Luis Ortiz 40.0%
Cal Quantrill 40.5%
Brandon Bielak 40.8%
Patrick Corbin 41.0%
Speaking of Wainwright, he pitches again tonight. Any given start could be this dude’s last, so if you’re a big fan Wainwright’s career - tune in to that one - and don’t be late, it might not last long!
And hey Justin Verlander threw 94 pitches and got three whiffs, giving up nine hits and four earned runs on a 2:2 K:BB. That was the first time in the last two seasons that he’s thrown at least 70 pitches and had fewer than five whiffs.
Yesterday: 94 pitches, 3 whiffs
8/5/2023: 97 pitches, 5 whiffs
4/22/2022: 85 pitches, 5 whiffs
7/7/2023: 98 pitches, 6 whiffs
His SwStr% is just 10.7% this year and his K% is down to 20.2% because of it. He’s been serviceable despite that, but he’s not a fantasy ace right now - far from it.
Jesus Luzardo continued his absolute plunge, giving up eight more hits and five more earned runs in 3.2 innings. He now has a 7.39 ERA since the all-star break, the 8th worst in the league:
Carrasco 9.64
Priester 9.11
Severino 9.00
Rodon 8.31
Giolito 8.19
T Williams 7.76
M Keller 7.71
Luzardo 7.39
Detmers 6.75
Hill 6.59
The K-BB% on Luzardo is down to 20.8%, and since July began it’s down to 17%. In his last four starts it’s just 8%. So it’s been bad, but there’s still hope for some good starts to finish out the year.
This is still most likely just a run of bad variance, and not an indication of any actual skill reduction or injury. It’s possible that he’s not right physically, but he’s always been a volatile pitcher - and volatile pitchers go on good and bad runs of starts and it doesn’t have to do with anything other than randomness.

Pitcher/Pitch Trends
Maybe Liberatore just exhausted himself after that good start last week.
Or maybe it’s a grand conspiracy where he ramped up the velocity in the minors to have more success and get the promotion, but then reduced in the Major Leagues because he’s actually a huge Cubs fan or something. And then maybe last time he felt like he was about to get the axe again so he threw hard again and dominated, and now he’s back to mailing it in. You never know what these Libs will do!
Interestingly, Morton bailed on the four-seamer yesterday:
He went more to the sinker and cutter, which he hadn’t done much of this year. That’s a pretty big drop in the blue line there, so something to monitor if you’re a Morton owner - although still not really because my advice is to just start him every time from here on out - so it doesn’t really matter what’s changing - but whatever this is what these freaking notes are for!

Hitters
Bryce Harper might be ready to win some leagues out there:
And Spencer Torkelson’s plot doesn’t look much different:
Ke’Bryan Hayes since returning from injury:
55 PA, .314/.345/.588, 3 HR, 11.6% Brl%, 16% K%, 78% Cont%, 33% GB%
He’s messed with us before, so this is probably just another run of positive variance, but it’s always enticing when you see him lifting the ball more given how good of a contact hitter he is and how hard he’s able to swing the bat:
I hope that Stone Garrett gets freed next year. He’s made just 248 PAs in the Majors this year and has done this:
.270/.347/.460, 9 Hr, 9.9% Brl%, 50% Hard-Hit%, 31% K%, 10% BB%
There are certainly, certainly worse hitters out there getting everyday reps. He’s a solid add in deeper leagues right now, and he has an .857 OPS against lefties - so he’s a phenomenal DFS play in those kinds of spots.
Christian Walker had himself a fun time in Coors Field this week.
14 PA, 6/10, 4 HR, 5 R, 9 RBI
Road teams are hitting .296/.365/.500 in Coors this year.
The Rockies are hitting .268/.327/.439 in Coors this year.
We had Great American Ballpark being comparable to Coors last year, but it hasn’t been this year. Opponents in GABP:
.254/.329/.452
Nothing with the parks changed, of course, this probably just has to do with the Reds having a better pitching staff and playing worse opponents.
But hey, in case you didn’t know - Coors Field is a good place to hit.
