One of the funniest things I’ve ever seen on a baseball field happened at the end of the Rockies game yesterday. I posted about it on X, and I imagine most of you have already seen it, but man, we have to watch it again and again.
I showed my wife, and she didn’t think it was that funny. And that’s because she doesn’t understand how ridiculous it is for a pitcher to go after a pop-up like that. In the Major Leagues, it’s ridiculous for a pitcher to go after any kind of pop-up. But this one is something you’ll probably never see again. A routine pop-up between the first and second baseman, the first baseman is in place to easily make the catch, but the pitch sprints after it like he’s the only one on the field. After a few sprinting steps, you’d think he’d have realized, “Okay, this ball is further away from the mound than I thought, I’ll veer off and let someone else grab it”, but no. That’s not how Juan Mejia does things. He goes all-out Randy Moss on it as if the first baseman was on the other team and an interception would have cost them the Super Bowl.
I mean, this is the most incredible play I’ve seen this year. I cannot stop laughing about it. Everything about it is just so funny.
What wasn’t funny yesterday was that all of the dashboards effectively broke. Tableau did a big update on Saturday, and that broke my account authentication, and it wasn’t enough for me to just go in and re-establish the connection between the Tableau file and the data source. I had to download them all to the desktop and then re-publish them. And when I re-published them, it only re-publishes the first tab, so that meant I had to re-publish them under a new name and a new URL. So now most of the Tableau dashboards have new links.
So if you’re a user of my Tableaus, keep that in mind! The dashboard you go to will probably still be there, but you’ll notice the data will have stopped refreshing after August 16th.
You will want to hit the Resource Glossary here and get the new links. And let me know if I missed any there.
Nabil Crismatt shows up on the automated reports below after throwing five solid innings against the Rockies yesterday. That was his 2025 debut in the Majors. But there’s nothing to see here; the guy has 175 MLB innings pitched with a 21.4% K% and a 7.2% BB%, mostly out of the bullpen. In the minors this year, he has just a 16.4% K% in 102.1 innings.
Cristian Javier made another start.
3 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 SO, 0 BB
Just 50 pitches. He left the game due to an illness. I don’t think there’s much information to gain from 50 pitches, while the guy may have been on the verge of soiling himself, so we’ll just look forward to the next outing.
17 whiffs and eight strikeouts for Ryan Pepiot after the Giants.
5.2 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 8 SO, 2 BB
But not a great result! Pepiot has been frustrating this year. He’s had plenty of good outings but has struggled at times. He has a 3.42 JA ERA in the second half with a 25.7% K% but a 10% BB%. There’s been bad luck with a 25% HR/FB and a 26.7% RISP H%.
He will be an interesting rank for the 2026 season. Nothing in the profile looks very good, but he’s been healthy and has plenty of things to feel good about.
Real tough news for the Phillies over the weekend with Zack Wheeler hitting the IL with a blood clot.
It’s still pretty unclear what this means for the rest of his season, but it could potentially cost him the rest of it. That’s a huge blow to the Phillies who clearly have World Series aspirations. And we hope that Wheeler gets back for the postseason.
In the meantime, you start wondering if Andrew Painter might show up. The problem is that Painter has a 5.15 ERA down in AAA. Not that ERA matters by itself, but yeah, he hasn’t been knocking down the door of the MLB. He doesn’t have a 7+ strikeout game since July 3rd and has a 23% K% on the year. That’s unexpected. He had a 39% K% back in 2023 (108 innings) before the Tommy John surgery. So maybe he’s not his usual self. If this guy wasn’t rated so highly as a prospect, he would not be anywhere near the MLB radar because of the performance this year.
The big prospect callup of the weekend was Sam Basallo. He’s the #9 prospect on MLB dot com.
In AAA this year (326 PA):
.270/.377/.584, 23.3% K%, 13.5% BB%, 23 HR
Some of the advanced stuff:
21% Brl%
41% GB%
115.9 Max EV
108.3 EV90
84% Z-Contact%
Good profile, obviously. He has struck out a ton against lefties (35%) and has only slugged .452. I wonder if the O’s won’t platoon him for the rest of this year. It makes more sense to me to let him face the lefties and hopefully improve, but we’ll see. He smashed righties down there to the tune of a .630 SLG with 19 of his 23 homers in just 250 PAs. So I’d be interested in starting him against righties right away in fantasy leagues. But there’s a real chance he just can’t hack MLB pitching right away. I don’t think you should empty your FAAB for him right now, but that’s probably already been decided. And we’re very late in the season, so maybe you should start spending it. Can’t take it with you!
Shoutouts to Lenyn Sosa. He is crushing the ball right now, with one of the highest xwOBA OE’s in the league in recent weeks. Sosa is now hitting .273/.301/.444 with 16 homers and two steals. He has an .849 OPS in August with six homers. The power surge doesn’t make a ton of sense with his career. .387 SLG, but this is a 25-year-old, so maybe he’s finding the stride a bit. I don’t know. Sneaky infield add in super deep leagues.
Another homer yesterday from Jakob Marsee. He has just a 17.7% K% and a .774 SLG in 62 MLB PAs. I would say he should be pretty much universally owned right now as we wait to see when/if it all falls apart. He’s added six steals to the mix on a huge 41% attempt rate.
He leads the second half in fantasy points scored per plate appearance. Here’s the top 10:
Marsee 3.27
Kurtz 2.97
Langeliers 2.93
Shaw 2.88
Ohtani 2.78
Carpenter 2.68
Stanton 2.64
Schwarber 2.62
Harris II 2.61
Guerrero Jr. 2.58
Laureano 2.53
Springer 2.51
F Alvarez 2.49
Collins 2.47
Schneider 2.46
L Robert 2.45
Doyle 2.44
Andujar 2.43
Duran 2.40
Ramirez 2.39
Let’s look at the bottom of the list. Here are the worst fantasy baseball producers of the second half with at least 90 PA.
It has not been a successful rookie year for Cam Smith, and that hot streak that we saw from Ceddanne Rafaela seems to be a thing of the past. Ramos, Busch, Butler, and Suzuki are also sad names to see here.
But that’s it for today, lots to get done this week.
