MLB Daily Notes - August 18th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
My goal yesterday was to be the near-perfect dad, and I think I got pretty close. I spent the whole day with the kids, gave my wife a long break in the middle of the day, and stayed very patient and kind. We went to a park and got rained on, and then we went to this really nice library in MISHAWAKA. Libraries are one of the more underrated aspects of the world. I got really into reading around the time I was getting married (25 or so), and for a while there, I was buying books for $20-$30. One day, my wife was like, bro get that from a library and I was like what do you mean? Libraries take on a new role when you have kids; great for bad weather days, provided you actually have calm and well-behaved kids (which I do, shout to me).
But today will be another challenge. My wife will be gone for the second half of the day. She’s leaving at some time for some place and will be gone for some length of time. She has this problem of telling me things in ways that make it impossible for me to remember what she said. There’s nothing I can do about it, she just needs to use more memorable words, I don’t know what else to say.
Being a dude is the best.
Pitcher Review
Not a ton of time for analysis here, but a few highlights.
David Festa led the day with an 18.5% SwStr%, so he jumps immediately back onto our radar. His outings so far:
7/27: 78 pitches, 7.7% SwStr%, 42.3% Strike%
7/3: 81 pitches, 16.0% SwStr%, 50.6% Strike%
7/24: 73 pitches, 11.0% SwStr%, 49.3% Strike%
7/30: 68 pitches, 13.2% SwStr%, 48.5% Strike%
8/5: 82 pitches, 17.1% SwStr%, 52.4% Strike%
8/11: 70 pitches, 10.0% SwStr%, 51.4% Strike%
8/17: 81 pitches, 18.5% SwStr%, 48.1% Strike%
The start on the 11th was the one after I added him, and I was not happy about it. I thought they’d leave him under 75 pitches or so, and the numbers weren’t good in that one, either. But he got there last night.
5 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 0 BB, 15 whiffs
Impressive stuff. It would still appear that he won’t be a quality start guy, but if that doesn’t hurt you then I think he’s probably one of the better SPs to add. He’s near an MFQ with the 13.5% SwStr% and 34% Ball%.
Cade Povich got deep into the game:
89 pitches, 6.1 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 0 BB, 16.9% SwStr%
Very good outing there. Remember that he came up to a good amount of excitement and then looked pretty rough and was sent back down. His pitch mix in the Majors so far:
Every time I write about him I mention his bad fastball, but how can I not? A 46% Strike% on a fastball you throw 41% of the time is not going to cut it. The curveball was supposed to be this absolutely dominant pitch, and it’s been pretty good at getting strikes (47% vs. the league average on a curve of 46%), but it hasn’t blown us away. That is an interesting pitch though, look at the velo on it. I guess that isn’t abnormally low, guys like Ranger Suarez and Max Fried have slower curves. I’ve never really even looked at velocity on a curveball. So, nevermind. I should just delete those sentences, but I’m not going to!
Slowest Curveball Velocity
I don’t think it’s going to happen this year for Povich. I think the upside is SP3 or something, and he’ll have to get it done with craftiness rather than stuff. Kyle Hendricks style (when he was good).
Jeffrey Springs only threw 76 pitches, but looked great once again:
5 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 7 K, 1 BB, 14.5% SwStr%, 52.6% Strike%
I would add him if he’s available. He did throw 87 pitches in his second start, so that’s a signal that they’ll let him get through six innings if the situation is right. He’s always been quite efficient as well, and the numbers are very strong now, all starts considered (15.5% SwStr%, 25.3% K%, 6.0% BB%).
Gotta tip the cap to Luis Severino, not because I think he’s any good, but because he threw a freaking CGSO.
9 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 8 K, 1 BB
That’s against the Marlins, but whatever, any CGSO is really impressive.
I’m a Tanner Bibee owner (that’s right, I think I OWN HIM), and he was pleasing me last night until his manager ruined it.
5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 7 K, 1 BB, 13.3% SwStr%, 55.4% Strike%
I needed a qualdaddy, and he did not come out for the sixth with just 83 pitches. The start before that he did not come back out for the sixth with just 84 pitches! So what the hell! I thought they were just really easing him back in last time after that skipped start due to injury, but this is two in a row now.
The good news is that Cleveland has not been careful with him like this before recently. He was regularly getting into the high and 100s in pitch counts, so I don’t see why he wouldn’t get back to that. Maybe they just wanted to extra careful one more time. You would think they view him as their ace, so they’re going to need him big-time for the playoffs. He’s not near the red zone in innings (132.1 on the season), so I think he’s fine. I’m coping here.
Cleveland has long been a franchise that lets their SPs rip the pitch counts, but that’s probably changed recently under new management.

Bobby Miller returned to the Majors:
4.2 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 1 K, 1 BB
The one walk is a good sign, but underneath it was a very, very bad 44% Ball%. The 34% Strike% is one of the worst marks you’ll see. He would appear to be very, very broken. His last handful of game logs are terrifying, especially given that a lot of them are from the minor leagues:
And for the season now, he has a 17% K% and a 13% BB%, and again, that includes the minor league starts. Very, very strange stuff.
Cristopher Sanchez also complete-gamed it up.
9 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 4 K, 0 BB
This was an extremely “lucky” start. By that I mean this:
46.5% Strike%, 9.1% SwStr%, 0.042 BABIP
But maybe it was just impeccable command; I don’t want to throw the “lucky” term around too loosely. But a .042 BABIP? I mean c’mon.
Good stuff from Sanchez, shout out to him.
And I’m outta here - have a blessed Sunday!
