Tableau is really screwing me up, man. They made changes and seem to have broken a bunch of stuff. I have found a way this morning to keep everything updated, but it’s a lot more work for me every morning now. I can’t just push one button to refresh with the new data; I have to go into each and select the file again. Big pain in the neck. But hopefully they can fix that or I can find some way to get it fixed. I don’t know. It’s frustrating when the stuff you’re doing ties to someone else, and they can just change things at any point without telling you. I guess the consolation is that I’m not paying Tableau any money.
I am suddenly in the playoff picture in my home league. I have notched wins of 10-2 and 9-3 the last two weeks, while some of the guys ahead of me have faltered. With three regular season weeks to go, I am just five games out of a playoff spot. And in a 12-category league, you can make up five categories pretty quickly. It’s still pretty unlikely to happen in three weeks (I have two other teams to pass, which makes it way more difficult), but it feels good to have the matchups feeling meaningful again.
I wish I knew what was going on with Spencer Strider. But his performance, along with Logan Gilbert’s last night, gives us something to talk about. And that is the level of difficulty it takes to come back from injury. The margin of error is so thin. The difference between being an elite SP and being out of the league is not very big. If you lose even a little bit of stuff or command, that can really jack you up.
Strider is still getting a bunch of whiffs. He has an elite 15% SwStr% this year. But the command is bad. He has a 38% Ball% now with a 9.2% BB%. And command isn’t just about walks. He’s clearly been throwing meatballs up there. He’s given up 17 homers in 88 innings (1.7 HR/9). The combination of walks and homers… that’s not a good thing to be doing.
The most striking thing in the pitch is the 7.7% SwStr% he has on the fastball. He is pretty dependent on that slider, which is not a good situation. Hitters can sit on the heater, and it hasn’t been good enough for that not to matter like years past. Hitters are slugging .511 with a .394 xwOBA on the fastball. I was super wrong about Strider. I really thought he was back to SP1 status in mid-June after he seemed to come out of that early funk.
Next year’s ranking will be really interesting. You would think he’d get more and more of his former touch back the further away he gets from the injury, but that might not be totally safe to say. He has a brace in his elbow now, right? He’s not working with the same equipment. Maybe it will just never come back.
As for Logan Gilbert, it hasn’t been all that bad until last night when he gave up six earned runs. That pushed his season ERA up to 3.93. The WHIP is still really good (1.07), but it’s been coming up. The K-BB% is still elite at 27%. So I have less doubt about Gilbert. I’d still be starting him without much of a second thought. But let’s compare the numbers, because the injury he had this year was pretty serious.
2024 → April 2025
239 IP, 28.7% K%, 4.7% BB%, 16.5% SwStr%, 34.4% Ball%, 2.43 JA ERA
May 2025 → Present
61.2 IP, 31.3% K%, 6.6% BB%, 15.0% SwStr%, 33.8% Ball%, 2.34 JA ERA
This would seem to be a case where there’s some bad luck involved. The indicators are really close if not better to what we were seeing before. The luck metrics are pretty normal since returning, though:
→ .306 BABIP
→ 19% HR/FB
→ 21.4% RISP H%
The BABIP and RISP H% are right around what you’d expect. The HR/FB is high, but not overly so.
I think we’re just seeing a lack of precision with both of these guys. You can’t afford to put too many fastballs over the heart of the plate against Major League hitters. So if you miss a spot in that way 4-5 times a game, you’re probably going to get hit pretty hard and get yourself into trouble. I’m buying/holding Gilbert and am less confident in Strider.
Spencer Arrighetti continued the struggle.
5 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 5 SO, 4 BB, 37.8% Ball%
He has not had since getting back with a 4.3% K-BB% and a 38.3% Ball% on a .404 xwOBA allowed. I’m sure he’ll improve as he gets back into the swing of things, but we still really don’t have any idea what his floor/ceiling situation is since we’ve seen relatively little of him in his young career.
I’d leave him on waivers for the rest of this year and then we’ll figure something out in December.
Ranger Suarez bounce-back! Ten punchies against the Mariners.
The Cade Horton run came to an end, but also, not really. He went 2.2 innings before getting pulled. The bullpen bailed him out, and he allowed just four hits and one earned run. So it didn’t hurt his stats too badly. But he was laboring with 61 pitches to get eight outs and a very bad 4.9% SwStr% before being taken out. But he was playing the Brewers, who are clearly being helped by angels like in the movies right now.
Trevor Rogers, man! He’s down to a 1.41 ERA with a 0.80 WHIP on a 23.3% K% and a 5.6% BB%. He has given up no more than two earned runs since June 18th (ten starts). Amazing stuff, and I never would have seen this coming.
Let’s spot us some hitters who are crushing the ball recently. Pitching has been really tough to come by in terms of difference-makers off the waiver wire, but maybe we can grab some hitters who will smash for the last few weeks of the fantasy season here.
Here are your second-half Brl/PA leaders with K% below 26%, owned in less than 60% of Yahoo leagues.
We mentioned Lenyn Sosa yesterday. He has been popping all over the place. Mickey Moniak has been sneaky good this year. I mean nothing great, but it's way better than you might have thought. He’s valuable when the Rockies are in a home series.
Matt Shaw has also been so much better. Eight homers in the second half. He’s developing fast, and that shouldn’t be super surprising to see since he was thrown into the fire here, making the club out of camp.
Stolen Base Attempt leaders of the second half, looking at guys with at least 80 PAs so we can tell that they’re playing most of the time.
So funny to see Josh Naylor there. The possibly available players would be Luis Robert, Anthony Volpe, Zack McKinstry, Blake Perkins, Caleb Durbin, Wenceel Perez, and Tyler Freeman.
Low-owned SLG leaders of the second half. Ignore the presence of Julio Rodriguez here, he has one of those names that is duplicated so the ownership kinda breaks. I should fix that. Thought I did, honestly. I definitely had it fixed for awhile.
I’ve gotta wrap it up here!
