MLB Daily Notes - August 19th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
It’s the week of my fantasy football draft. I will head back to Pittsburgh for our in-person draft Friday night, so it’s time to get into scramble mode there and start figuring stuff out. I pay no attention to college football or the draft, so I know nothing about rookies, and I don’t pay attention to free agency, so most of the time I’ll get to draft day and be like wow when did that running back go to Tennessee?
Even with very little effort and research, I have made the playoffs the last three seasons and went 12-2 last year. No luck in those playoffs though, I have not taken a championship down since 2008… yikes.
I have been keeping fantasy sports-related data in Excel spreadsheets for a very long time.
Let’s talk about some baseball stuff.
Pitcher Review
Blake Snell went out and racked up 23 more whiffs very casually.
7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 10 K, 2 BB, 21.1% SwStr%, 50.5% Strike%
His last eight starts:
8 GS, 52.1 IP, 1.03 ERA, 0.69 WHIP, 37.4% K%, 8.6% BB%
During that time, his Ball% is down to 34.9%, a strong number for anybody - but it’s completely elite for Snell. He has a 19.2% SwStr% and just a .210 xwOBA allowed to go with it. No pitcher is better than Snell right now.
K-BB% Since July 1
Joe Musgrove is back at it and had an encouraging start yesterday:
73 pitches, 4.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 6 K, 2 BB, 19.2% SwStr%, 53.4% Strike%
His pitch mix in these two outings since returning from IL:
Those are encouraging numbers with the 14.7% SwStr%, 34% Ball%, and the 46% GB%. I have long liked Musgrove and have thought he’s underrated for fantasy purposes. That’s certainly true now, given that we haven’t seen much of him this year, but if you have Musgrove - I think you’ll be pleased with what he gives you down the stretch.
Framber Valdez is really putting his season back together in a hurry. This run he’s on now began on July 10th. Since that start:
7 GS, 46.1 IP, 1.94 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, 34.3% K%, 7.0% BB%, 27.3% K-BB%
A 34% K% from Framber Valdez doesn’t make a lot of sense. Did something change? The answer is YES. He has recently traded sinkers for curveballs and changeups.
FEWER SINKERS = MORE STRIKEOUTS
SwStr% by Pitch Type, MLB 2024
Splitter 17.8%
Slider 16.2%
Changeup 15.4%
Sweeper 14.2%
Curveball 13.5%
Cutter 11.4%
Four-Seamer 10.7%
Sinker 6.4%
I was curious about if there is some relationship directly between sinker usage and overall strikeout rate. The answer is that there’s some signal there, but very little:
That doesn’t mean you should not throw a sinker; it’s a useful pitch for what it is. But for our purposes, where we want strikeouts for fantasy, we don’t like sinkers that much.
Back to Valdez. Here are some stats.
April - June Pitch Mix
SI 53%
CU 27%
CH 16%
SL 3%
FF 2%
10.8% SwStr%, 19.3% K%, 8.2% BB%
July - August Pitch Mix
CU 38%
SI 36%
CH 18%
SL 7%
FF 0.5%
15.3% SwStr%, 31.6% K%, 7.1% BB%
I would say he did the right thing getting away from the 53% sinker usage, and he should keep doing that.
Nine strikeouts from JP Sears yesterday.
7.2 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 9 K, 0 BB, 17.1% SwStr%
His season update:
25 GS, 141 IP, 4.15 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 18.8% K%, 6.3% BB%, 1.2 HR/9
Sears is better than he’s given credit for, but not good enough for a standard fantasy league. I do still like taking him in those NFBC 50-round leagues. I guess things will set up worse for him next year as the Athletics move into a more hitter-friendly ballpark. But shout out to Sears, good stuff yesterday.
Sonny Gray has had some really bad luck lately. He has a 5.50 ERA over his last six starts despite an elite 31% K% and great 6.6% BB%.
He wasn’t very efficient yesterday with the three walks and seven hits allowed, and that took him out after five innings. You are probably frustrated by Gray, but you should despair not! He has a 5.50 ERA over the last 30 days, but a 3.01 SIERA.
Here are your least-lucky SPs over the last 30 days:
Let’s clear up some of the noise in there. Getting rid of everybody with a SIERA over 4.20 over this time:
There are some reasons to hold on to guys like Lodolo, Waldron, Birdsong, Williams, Morton, and Bradley.
Two straight good ones from Morton!!!
5.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 7 K, 2 BB, 15.9% SwStr%
How about Bowden Francis!?
7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 7 SO, 0 BB
Over his last three:
19 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 22 SO, 1 BB, 2 HR, 33.3% K%, 1.5% BB%
So - is it legit? Let’s look at the pitch mix:
14% SwStr% = GOOD
27% Ball% = ELITE
.177 xwOBA allowed = ELITE
The fastball has been the anchor. A 60% Strike% is other-worldly. For the year, it’s at 54% Strike% and a 10.2% SwStr%, so still a pretty good fastball.
The splitter usage has come up in these last three outings as a starter. For the season, he’s used it 16% of the time, but recently, it’s 25% - and you can see the high Strike% on that pitch as well. The league-average splitter has just a 42% Strike% but a 17.8% SwStr%. So he’s landing his for strikes more often than the normal splitter (44% Zone% for Francis vs. a league average of 37%).
The pitch modeling stuff:
100 Stuff+
101 Location+
104 Pitching+
His locations have been through the roof lately, and that has been the driver of this recent success. His stuff is good enough to hang around, but it’s not good enough to where you think this is the beginning of Francis entering the top 40 SPs or anything like that. But I think you can ride him out for now. His next start will be this week against the Angels, and after that, he will likely get the Twins. I’d start him this week and see what it looks like.
Just 70 pitches for Clayton Kershaw, but that was enough to get him a quality start.
6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 K, 1 BB, 5.7% SwStr%, 35.7% Strike%, 40% Ball%
That’s some Houdini stuff there, getting 18 outs on 70 pitches while throwing 40% of your pitches for a ball. That would appear to be one of the luckier starts of the season.
Tyler Mahle also didn’t look very good:
61 pitches, 3 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 1 K, 0 BB, 9.8% SwStr%, 32.8% Ball%
That brings his season SwStr% to 12.2% and his Ball% to 34.5%. It’s a discouraging 18% K% so far, but it's too early to judge in just three starts and 229 pitches.
Kutter Crawford only gave up one homer!
5.1 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 4 SO, 1 BB
He is now at a 22.9% K% and a 6.2% BB% for the season. That K% has been on the descent, he has just a 19% K% over his last seven starts. He’s a bit of a fringe starter right now, I would say. He’s not nearly as bad as he’s been for the last month or so, but he’s well outside of the top 30 SPs, I’d say.
I’ve gotta wrap it up, but let’s do some BABIP stuff before we peace out.
