MLB Daily Notes - August 1st
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
Let me first just state that there is nothing more disgusting than a kid pooping in their soaking wet swim diaper. That has happened to us three out of the last five days now. And the first two times, you’ll never believe this, I had to clean it up. Me, the man of the house - changing diapers. As I said a week or so ago, I am out of the toughest ages for my kids. The youngest is finally getting to where he can understand and listen and respond to incentives, which is nice. But we have a ways to go until he’s potty trained.
The podcast is really rolling these last two weeks. I talked about all 15 National League teams yesterday, looking at what they did at the deadline and how they set up for the rest of the season. And I even made my playoff predictions, although it ended up being basically exactly just what the current standings are. I’ll do the American League today. My podcast is now the #1 ranked fantasy baseball podcast in the Northern-Eastern-Central Indiana region. And that is the result of an independent study that I just conducted by myself this morning in my head.
Pitcher Review
Framber Valdez led the day with 21 whiffs and ten strikeouts.
6 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 10 K, 0 BB, 56.5% Strike%
Pretty great stuff. The ERA still isn’t great at 3.79 and the K-BB% is mediocre at 14.7%, so it hasn’t been the best season for Framber. His GB% is still 60.4% and the 48 PA/HR is strong, so he’s tough to rack up runs on, but the command hasn’t been quite as good this year.
Nick Lodolo got rocked:
6.2 IP, 11 H, 8 ER, 6 K, 0 BB, 11.7% SwStr%, 47.6% Strike%
He has now given up multiple runs in his last six starts and has a 3.99 ERA on the year with a 3.63 SIERA and an 18% K-BB%. His K% is on the downtrend (29.7% in 2022, 28.3% last year, 24.4% this year). Over his last ten starts since returning from the IL, he has just a 21.7% K% and a 6.8% BB% for a 4.64 ERA.
Most concerning is that since that return his SwStr% is just 12.2%. That’s really not what we got used to seeing from Lodolo, so something isn’t quite right with him, it doesn’t seem. The 45% Strike% is pretty bad and the GB% is only pretty good at 50%. I am at the point where I don’t really think he must be owned in standard leagues.
Pitch mix last ten starts:
I wonder if he couldn’t benefit from upping the sinker usage a bit, but what do I know?
Michael McGreevy debuted for the Cardinals. He was a first round pick in 2021, and made 80 starts in the minors before finally arriving here yesterday. His minor league career wasn’t very good with a 19.4% K%, a 4.23 ERA, and a 1.34 WHIP. But he earned himself a solid win yesterday:
7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 3 K, 1 BB, 9.1% SwStr%, 37.4% Strike%
If you’re following along, that 37.4% Strike% is so bad. So bad.
Here’s the pitch mix:
Low fastball velocity, but a lot of different pitches. He’s only the 12th pitcher this year to throw six different pitches at least ten times in a single outing. Those names:
Yu Darvish, Josiah Gray, Kyle Gibson, Michael Lorenzen, Michael McGreevy, Paul Blackburn, Merrill Kelly, Ryan Feltner, Sonny Gray, Spencer Schwellenbach, Zack Wheeler
There are a couple of very good SPs there (Gray, Wheeler, and maybe Schwelly), but most of the time when you see a guy throwing this much stuff at the wall, it’s because they just don’t have very good stuff. IT can work, but I wouldn’t think there’s a very bright future ahead for McGreevy given that he could only generate a 19% K% in the minor leagues.
I’m confused as to why you would draft a pitcher in the first round that doesn’t have upper-90’s velocity. But maybe he did back then or something, I don’t know. But if I were drafting baseball players, I’d be doing this
College Hitters
Pitchers that throw really freaking hard
Brady Singer is on a good run of it again. His last eight starts:
48 IP, 2.06 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 20.6% K%, 6.9% BB%
Plenty of soft matchups in this sample (MIA/TB/COL/CWS/CHC/CWS), but Singer keeps reminding us that he’s clearly a big league pitcher. He’s not more than a streamer for fantasy purposes, but he’s fine.
MacKenzie Gore would appear to be cooked. Since June began:
11 GS, 52.1 IP, 6.88 ERA, 1.78 WHIP, 20.1% K%, 10.8% BB%
Gotta give Logan Webb a shout:
9 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 6 K, 1 BB
That’s a complete game shutout.
Here’s a list of this year’s CGSO’s:
He’s once again in the top ten in innings pitched per start. But he’s usually #1 or #2, and he’s down to #5 this year.
IP by GS
Lugo 6.47
Gilbert 6.44
Rea 6.41
Burnes 6.30
Webb 6.28
Anderson 6.22
Nola 6.20
Skubal 6.19
Sale 6.15
Houck 6.14
Brayan Bello has taken advantage of some soft matchups lately, but to his credit he’s getting it done:
Yesterday he went against the Mariners:
6.1 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 7 K, 2 BB, 15.3% SwStr%, 44.9% Strike%
He has a much better 25.7% K% and 5.9% BB% over his six starts. And that’s even with a .350 BABIP, although he has been hit pretty hard with a .350 xwOBA. So there’s good and bad luck there, somehow. But Bello is a weird pitcher.
These last six starts have been against: MIA, OAK, KC, LAD, NYY, SEA
So that’s three really soft matchups, one middling, and two really tough ones. He still has given up at least two runs in each start and has walked at least one and given up a homer each time as well, so it’s a mixed bag of results. The most important thing to say is that the season K-BB% is just 14%, so he’s not someone to believe in for standard fantasy leagues. There’s still hope for the future on him though, I think.
Hitter Review
Matt Olson hit two dingers! He is alive! Well… maybe not quite yet.
His July:
105 PA, .172/.257/.355, .612 OPS, 5 HR, 31.4% K%, 8.6% BB%
He has turned into an empty-power guy with the strikeout rate blowing up this year.
Let’s look at some July hitting leaders.
