Pitcher Review
The whiffs came back from Tanner Houck:
6 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 8 K, 0 BB, 20% SwStr%
He has been very good for the Red Sox this year after getting that contract extension in the spring. He’s won 8 of his 25 starts with a 3.07 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP, and he’s eaten a good number of innings at 152.2 so far. He has primarily had that success via getting outs on contact. His .310 xwOBA is in the top 30, and his 55% GB% is sixth-best among SPs who have at least 20 starts this year. It’s amazing how low you can keep your ERA if you don’t give up home runs. He has given up just nine homers this year for a 0.53 HR/9.
Lowest HR/9 2024
Cristopher Sanchez 0.32
Logan Webb 0.38
Chris Sale 0.51
Reese Olson 0.52
Tanner Houck 0.53
Bryan Woo 0.56
Albert Suarez 0.56
Reynaldo Lopez 0.60
Jose Soriano 0.64
Zac Gallen 0.65
There are a few different ways to post a really low HR/9 like this.
Strike a lot of guys out (don’t allow balls in play in the first place)
Get a lot of ground balls
Get really lucky
I queried all three things to find the list of pitchers that are better than the 50th percentile in all three; here is the result:
So these are pitchers with above-average strikeout rates, above-average ground ball rates, and below-average HR/9 marks. You see a bunch of HR/9 marks under 1.0 here, which we’d expect.
Houck only falls short in K%:
K%: 21.2% (44th percentile)
GB%: 55.3% (94th percentile)
HR/FB: 8.9% (90th percentile)
If we look at how all of these things correlate:
There is no correlation between GB% and HR/FB. The fact that a guy keeps the ball on the ground at a high rate says nothing about how his fly balls will perform when they do occur. That’s a good thing to keep in mind.
Here’s the full data if you’re interested; it will not be updated after today.
The best start of the night came from Gavin Stone:
7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 10 K, 2 BB, 16.7% SwStr%, 52.2% Strike%
Here’s his season pitch mix now:
He threw all seven of those pitches last night.
26 changeups
26 four-seamers
12 sinkers
11 sliders
8 curveballs
5 sweepers
2 cutters
I think, eventually, he will narrow this down to his best four pitcher. We don’t see many guys actually using more than five pitches as they get into the groove of their career (save a few exceptions such as Yu Darvish). Having the options is a good thing, there are a lot of different paths Stone can take as he tries to establish himself.
The changeup is clearly very good (20.1% SwStr%), but it’s the same old story - a changeup without a great fastball to change up. His four-seamer has just a 48% Strike%, the sinker is at 47%, and the cutter is at 45%. He can make up for the mediocre fastballs by having all three of them, so I think there’s a path to Stone being quite a good MLB pitcher. So far, he hasn’t been good with a 4.42 career SIERA.
There are only ten pitchers who have thrown at least seven different pitch types at least 20 times this season:
Here’s that Lugo breakdown:
Chris Bassitt is the only other guy with more than seven. He has thrown eight different pitch types.
We got another outing from Zebby Matthews.
5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 5 R, 1 K, 2 BB, 6.5% SwStr%, 43.5% Strike%, 35.9% Ball%
Not good! Just six whiffs on 92 pitches. Here are the numbers on him through 169 pitches.
He has earned a ton of strikes on the four-seamer with that 55% Strike%, but only two of them were whiffs. For the hell of it, here are the 77 events we’ve seen on those pitches:
We need much more data to make any judgments. He threw 118 four-seamers in AAA and earned a 16.1% SwStr% and a 57.6% Strike%, so that was good. Doing that at the highest level is much more difficult, and it hasn’t been a good start.
The slider had a 24% SwStr% in AAA, so that’s a pitch to watch. So far, he’s thrown only 41, so I’m not going to care what the numbers say right now.
I wouldn’t be holding on tightly to Zebby, but it depends on what kind of league you’re in.
Joe Boyle kept the ball rate under 40%!!
6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 6 K, 3 BB, 10.6% SwStr%, 49% Strike%, 36.5% Ball%
And he put up his best start of the season - imagine that!
A 45% Ball% on a four-seamer is so laughably bad. The league average is 34%, so he’s 11 full points above that. That’s absurd, but somehow it’s not the worst number in the league.
Worst Ball% on Four-Seamers
Jose Quintana 46%
Joe Boyle 45%
Alexis Diaz 42%
Tyler Kinley 41%
Griffin Canning 41%
Roddery Munoz 40%
Erik Miller 40%
Aaron Nola 40%
You see how quickly we get below 40%. Only those eight names are above 39%, and Boyle and Quintana are above 45%. You cannot be a Major League pitcher for long with that number.
The other end of the spectrum:
Best Ball% on Four-Seamers
Gausman 24%
De Los Santos 25%
Francis 26%
Tonklin 26%
Woo 26%
B Hudson 26%
Yusei Kikuchi had a rough first inning but got it together and put up another pretty nice line:
5.2 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 3 R, 7 K, 1 BB, 17.2% SwStr5
That brings him to this as an Astro:
386 pitches, 16.8% SwStr%, 34.1% K%, 7.7% BB%, 50.5% Strike%, .574 OPS
Fantastic stuff. That’s the fifth-best K% since the trade deadline. The Astros find themselves a treasure there, which is good - because they gave up quite a lot to get him.
And Michael King had himself another nice line:
6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 3 BB, 16.5% SwStr%, 44.7% Strike%
He did not have great command, but he got through it and won his fifth game in his last seven starts.
Hitter
The two biggest performances of the day came from Corey Seager (2 HR, 2 R, 4 RBI) and Adrian Del Castillo (HR, 6 RBI).
We should take a look at this Adrian fellow. He is a D’Backs catcher who was called up recently and has done this in the Majors:
37 PA, .333/.405/.667, 3 HR, 6 R, 14 RBI, 1 SB, 35% K%, 10.8% BB%
More numbers:
Swing%: 48% (around league average)
Zone Contact: 73% (very bad)
Bat Speed: 72.6 (a bit above average)
GB%: 30%
LD%: 15%
FB%: 50%
Brl%: 25%
So he doesn’t seem overly hard, but he hits the ball in the air a ton. His average launch angle so far is 21.3 degrees.
We are talking about all of 20 balls in play. If we look at his AAA performance:
17% K%
45% Swing%
78% Contact%
11.6% Brl%
33% GB%
30% LD%
28% FB%
16.6 average launch angle
Things are more down-to-earth there, and I would expect all of his Major League numbers to gravitate towards there. If you’re really hurting for power production at catcher, you can consider him - but the bigger picture is that this is a guy who is very unlikely to be a useful hitter moving forward, at least in the short term.
Some of the cardinal rules here that we should all remember
K% above 30% is very bad (duh)
High FB% is bad for BABIP
Low EV on FB% is really, really bad for BABIP
If you’re getting that many balls in the air and pulling them at a decent clip, you’ll hit some homers. That’s the good news. But the rest of the profile results in bad things. A 30%-35% K% with a very high FB% is sure to turn into a batting average near .200.
So here’s a prediction for you: Adrian Del Castillo will lose 100 points on his .333 batting average by the end of the season.
On to the automation.
