It has happened. Bubba Chandler has gotten the call. He will debut for the Pirates this weekend… out of the bullpen.
My offseason analysis this year was probably the worst thing I’ve ever done. I was wrong on so many guys. I drafted a ton of Shane McClanahan, loved guys like Lawrence Butler, Brandon Pfaadt, Masyn Winn, and other flat-face-fallers. Here’s the perfect draft I wrote up on March 7th.
That was my dream team, and it is almost certainly a last place team. Maybe I should quit.
And if that’s not enough, the two big time minor league pitcher stashes I recommended were Bubba Chandler and Quinn Mathews. We have seen neither of them, and it’s August 21st.
And it’s not because of bad team management. I mean, the management with Chandler has been weird, and I could see points of disagreement, but he’s not been good in AAA, so you can’t blame the Pirates FO too much.
So I’m curious as to which minor league pitchers have had the biggest gains and losses in K-BB% from 2024 to 2025. Here is everybody with 350 batters faced in each of the last two years (in the minors only) with a K-BB% gain of at least five points.
There are way more losses of five points than gains of five points. I suppose that’s because those good pitchers would have gotten moved up a level to face tougher competition, and there’s also probably some regression to the mean involved.
There are very few names I’ve heard of here. Quinn Mathews hasn’t qualified this year with just 73 innings. But he has lost 17 points on his K-BB%. He went from 27% last year to 10% this year.
Here’s the full data if you want to look for some guys you’re interested in.
Cam Schlittler was messing around with a no-hitter last night and then the Yankees bullpen blew his lead but won in extra innings. He had a 17.5% SwStr%, so he’s fourth on the Yesterdays SP Data sheet.
I’m not surprised to see a very good start from Schlittler. He has the stuff for these kinds of things. It’s just a matter of finding a night where the command is there. Here’s the pitch mix data for the year:
The 12% SwStr% is pretty mediocre (that’s right around league average), but the 33% Ball% is nice to see and the velocity pops there. The 56% Strike% on the four-seamer is great. The slider hasn’t been quite as good with a weak 12.4% SwStr% and a .358 xwOBA. So that’s the thing he needs to work on. Polish that slider a bit. He certainly has the fastball to hang in a big league rotation.
I wonder if Gerrit Cole could help him out. They have pretty similar arsenals. Is Cole hanging around the Yankees, or is he just gone for the year until the playoffs? What do these guys who are out for the year do?
Sandy Alcantara appears above. He went for a 9:1 K:BB on an eilte 17.5% SwStr% and 55.3% Strike%. That makes two really good starts in a row (16:2 K:BB, 29 whiffs, 58% Strike%). He threw 114 pitches last night! He was just the ninth pitcher to go for that many pitches.
Sandy in August:
23.8% K%, 6.7% BB%, 17.1% K-BB%, 3.25 JA ERA, 1.78 WHIP+
He’s still having bad luck with a 30.4% RISP H% this month. That has been out of control this year, and it’s something that will improve. Someday it will, I promise.
Here’s the other side of that:
The next two for Sandy will be at home against the Braves and then in New York against the Mets. I think you can stream him if you’re looking for some innings, but it’s hard to say he’s anywhere near a safe bet.
Hurston Waldrep did it again.
7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 7 SO, 1 BB
I put a small bid in for him last FAAB run in MLB DW league, but somebody dropped like 15% of their season budget for him, and I didn’t get him. I thought that was a high price to pay, but it’s paid off so far. He’s been terrific. 14 whiffs last night with a 51.7% Strike% while generating a .236 xwOBA.
He has hardly been touched so far with a .246 xwOBA on the season. Hitters are slugging .183 against him and they have not yet homered in 346 pitches.
It’s tough to argue with it. 27% K%, 13.6% SwStr%, 6.7% BB%, 36.1% Ball%, 2.77 JA ERA, 51% GB%. He’s looking good. I’m still curious about how long he can do it without having a good fastball, but it’s worked thus far. I wouldn’t put too much trust in him, but the numbers so far are great.
Drew Rasmussen threw 91 pitches! That was his second time all year over 90.
But it wasn’t a good start for the Rasdaddy.
I wonder how Jacob Misiorowski feels. He came out so hot, made the All Star Game, and since then everything has been awful. He had an injury, and since coming back, he has a 22% BB% in two starts with a horrible 6.1% SwStr%. The command has disappeared. And that shouldn’t have been shocking, but the extent to which he’s fallen apart is surprising. Nobody expects a 22% BB%. But we’re talking about like five innings here. Anyways, I do think you can drop the guy in redraft leagues.
Here are the Google trends for him, for some reason.
Tell you one thing, people in the Dakotas and in Wyoming do not give an eff about Jacob Misiorowski.
Let’s check on my own Google Trends.
What can I say, I am pretty famous. People in Minnesota love me.
That’s actually funny that the leading state is Indiana. Is the lead singer YES guy from Indiana?
No, he is English. And I don’t know if that’s a typo or not, but it says he was born J-O-H-N… but he dropped the H? Is that true? Are there are any hardcore YES fans in my audience that can look into this for me? Did this guy really only dominate my fame because he took the coward’s way out and dropped the H instead of being born without it?
I’ve never had an H, bro. And if I did, I wouldn’t have run away from it. My name is actually Jonathan.
Shohei Ohtani gave up nine hits to the Rockies, and then took one off the leg. His pitching season:
Spectacular numbers, actually. A brutal .378 BABIP, but look at the rest of those numbers. A 2.10 JA ERA! 3.5% BB%!
This might be the greatest pitching season of all time that has been completely and utterly useless for fantasy purposes. And he’ll get the day off today. That was actually planned ahead of time. He was going to get this day off.
I have him on the home league team where I am trying to pull off a miraculous playoff berth at the last minute. So I’m pretty dismayed that a Coors game will be taken away from him.
Speaking of birth, my sister had a baby the other day. So I’m an uncle again. I now have two nieces, and will have a third on my wife’s side in the next few days or weeks. Shout out to me. That’s right, shout out to ME, not my two sisters who have just had babies.
Two hitters who have been ass chunks lately:
He has a 31% K% on the year with only 13 homers on a .365 SLG. I thought he would have a bad batting average but at least hit a lot of homers. And he cranked 16 before we got into June.
Mar-May: .816 OPS, 13.1 PA/HR
June-Aug: .536 OPS, 47.3 PA/HR
Catchers, man. Can’t trust ‘em.
Ramos has hit .273/.343/.339 since the break. Decent at getting hits and taking walks, but the power is gone. Just one homer in his 137 PAs in the second half.
The Astros have not been able to facilitate the immediate Jesus Sanchez breakout; he is hitting .150/.203/.233 since joining Houston. No homers, 1 RBI. The Astros are 69-58 somehow. Another team that is winning without their players doing anything good.
Some teams are magic. The ‘Stros have just two hitters over an .800 OPS in 100+ PA this year (Pena .847, Paredes .85). Paredes is done for the year. Jose Altuve at .794 is close, and he’s been really good lately. And Yordan Alvarez is on his way back. So you can’t say they’re a horrible offense right now, but it doesn’t make a ton of sense to me how many games they have won.
It’s not like their pitching staff has been lights out. Brown and Valdez are a great 1-2, but they have only gotten a 3.88 ERA out of their starting pitchers this year. I don’t know man, some teams just have it. The Brewers and Astros have it. But I don’t think it will work in the playoffs.
Not very nice language there, Mister Beane. But a good line.
I was looking for some streamers this morning and I picked out two good ones for tomorrow.
I went with Povich. Ashcraft threw just 61 pitches last time, and he’s been a long reliever this year. He’ll make the start, and he’ll probably do well, but there’s too high of a chance it’s just four innings, and that won’t help very much.
Povich has been really good lately, but it got derailed by an injury. Check it out. Since June:
6 G, 29.1% K%, 7.9% BB%, 2.76 JA ERA, 1.93 WHIP+, 12.6% SwStr%, 35.9% Ball%
He’s been unlucky (.342 BABIP, 34.5% RISP H%). He has racked up 32 whiffs and a 22.1% K-BB% in his three starts since getting back. He struck out 10 Astros last time out with a 19.8% SwStr% and 34.1% ball%. The four-seamer has been good, somehow (56% Strike%, 30% Ball%), and that curveball has been death (19.6% SwStr%, 52% Strike%, 100% GB%).
I’m rolling with him tomorrow against Houston, and maybe even for the rest of the season. SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
More streamers coming tomorrow when we get the weekend streaming article out, for now, I have to go!
