Some SP notes
Hyun Jin Ryu has allowed just a .577 OPS with a .284 xwOBA. However, the GB% is only 45% and the 19.7% K% and 9.6% SwStr% would have to make you believe he’s been pretty lucky. This guy has always been crafty and whatnot, but he’s 36 now and we haven’t seen much of him lately - I wouldn’t be messing with him in fantasy
Kyle Bradish continues his breakout campaign with his best start of the year yesterday. He has a 3.03 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP on the year with a solid 17% K-BB%, and he’s kept the ball in the yard with a 0.85 HR/9. The SwStr% is still bad at 11.6%, but the K% is respectable at 24%, and he’s really fixed the walk stuff down at 6.8% BB%. Add on to that a 47% GB% and we have a guy we really like for next year.
Eury Perez showed how ridiculously dominant he can be on Saturday with a 24.4% SwStr% and a 50% K% against the Dodgers. He got through six innings in 90 pitches, which has to be the tippy-top of his pitch allowance. I said last time you really don’t need to roster him for the rest of the year given the lack of experience and pitch count stuff, and he obviously made that take look very stupid this weekend.
Hunter Greene returned and got hit around, giving up five homers. That’s a tough thing to do. He had a nice 15.6% SwStr% and the fastball velo was there (98.4mph), so there’s no real reason to change our takes on the guy. This was his first Major League action since June 17th, so we can forgive some rustiness. And rustiness with Greene can end up very bad. He gave up a high 1.72 HR/9 last year - and it’s likely that will just remain a problem given his four-seamer+slider arsenal and the home ballpark. My advice is to just keep plugging him in for the rest of the year because we know the elite strikeout ability he has - and that’s the most important thing. But I wouldn’t blame you for sitting the next one out just to see (I wouldn’t do it myself though, let’s just roll with it - but that’s easier said than done if your league is in the playoffs currently).
Chase Silseth struggled again, lasting just 3.2 innings and giving up two homers to the Rays. His SwStr% was there at 14.3%, but he walked three and had a low 46.8% Strike%. That brings his Ball% for the year to 38% - which is a little bit too high for me. He doesn’t seem to have consistent command, and that’s a struggle.
Kodai Senga pitched well again with and now has quality starts in four of his last five. For the year the K-BB% is 28-11%, which is solid. Since June 28th, he has just an 8% BB%, which is great with the maintained 28% K%. He has turned in a 2.72 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP since then - so he’s paying off if you held on long enough. He’ll be an interesting pitcher to jump at next year if he really does keep up this 8-9% BB% for the rest of the year. That would have us believing he can do that kind of walk rate next year as well, which would make him a very good pitcher.
Eduardo Rodriguez now has a 3.03 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP on the year. That’s with a 25.3% K% and a 5.9% BB% - so he’s been very, very good. The injury has kept him to 19 starts, but still - he’s been one of the more valuable guys relative to where they were drafted. My preseason concerns were that he didn’t even really want to play baseball given all of the reasons he’s been off the field lately - but I suppose we can put those concerns to bed and rank him accordingly next year.
We’re probably entering the playoffs for a lot of leagues now, so now is a great time to have an eye on the SP Next 2 Starts SOS sheet. This is for paid subs, and it grades each pitcher based on their next two projected matchups. It’s a good resource for picking streamers. The top 7 currently:
You obviously can’t stream Kirby, but some of these other names may very well be available and you can consider them if you need some innings. The link is on the resources page, but you can also just go to sheets.google.com and search “SP Next 2 Starts SOS” and it should pop up.
You can also keep an eye on the Probable Pitchers - Next 10 Days sheet. There’s an '“Upcoming Streamers” tab there:
What this does is takes all probable started under 50% rostered and gets their projected projection and sorts the data by that. So today’s recommended streamer would be Balckburn, tomorrow’s would be Detmers, and so on and so forth.
One interesting guy to watch this week would be Kyle Harrison. He has been one of the most dominant SPs in the minors for a couple of years now, in terms of the strikeout at least.
2022 (A+/AA): 2.71 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 39.8% K%, 10.5% BB%
But this year in AAA he’s had a lot of trouble with the walk:
2023 (AAA): 4.66 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, 35.6% K%, 16.3% BB%
This is in the Pacific Coast League, where offense reigns, but it’s still horrible to see a walk rate that high in 20 starts.
The PCL averages:
11.8% SwStr%
44.1 Strike%
39.5% Ball%
21.8% K%
12.2% BB%
So if would adjust for the league context, we would be looking at more like an 11.5% BB% in the Majors, but even that is a tough thing to get away with. If he would maintain a 30%+ K% in the Majors, maybe he could have some success - but I’m far from sure he can do that.
The death knell for the Harrison 2023 fantasy conversation is the fact that the pitch counts have been LOW already. He’s thrown 60, 38, 42, and 60 pitches in his last four starts - so this would seem like a situation where the Giants have him in descension mode with an eye on the future. He’s not a fantasy-relevant pitcher for the short term, but certainly, he’s someone who should be rostered in all dynasty leagues.

Hitters
Let’s look at a couple of Orioles quickly.
Jordan Westburg had two barrels yesterday but neither of them left the yard. For the year the infielder has done this:
.261/.299/.403, 2 HR, 5.7% Brl%, 21.5% K%, 4.9% BB%, 74% Cont%, .314 xwOBA
So a pretty pedestrian profile, but there are certainly many hitters worse. It wouldn’t seem like there’s a ton of raw power here at this point, which makes him a tough play for standard fantasy leagues. He’s not a huge base stealer (3 steals in 144 PA, 12.9% SB Att% - which is slightly over the league average), so that doesn’t entirely make up for the lack of power. So he’s fine, and a good play in deep leagues - but not a priority guy.
Someone also asked me to look into Ryan Mountcastle. So let’s give his updated season stat line
383 PA, .275/.321/.481, 17 HR, 55 R, 60 RBI, 3 SB
More:
14.3% Brl%, 23.6% K%, 6.3% BB%, 71% Contact%, .363 xwOBA
To me, this guy is one of the most underrated hitters in the league. He has consistently delivers very high barrel rates whether you’re dividing it by balls in play or plate appearances.
He has generated a barrel in 9.9% of his plate appearances, a number outdone by only 10 other hitters. It just blows that he plays in the new Camden Yards which seems to have been specifically designed to ruin his career. Right-handed barrels have gone for homers just 39% of the time in Camden, the third-worst mark in the league (CLE & PIT), so that turns a whole bunch of Mountcastle dingers to doubles or even fly outs, and that’s not going to change - but the guy hits the ball extremely well and doesn’t strike out a ton, I still love him.
If he were to ever get moved to Cincinnati or something this guy would be an easy 35+ homer projection with upside for 50. He has a pretty significant platoon split this year (.643 OPS vs. RHP, 1.109 vs. LHP). There’s a lot of noise in there with such a limited sample, but for his career:
vs. LHP: 149 wRC+, .852 OPS
vs. RHP: 82 wRC+, .748 OPS
So if you have a full week of him facing righties at home, you probably aren’t pumped about it - but overall I think he’s a guy that should be started in all leagues, and he makes for a superb DFS plays in these road spots against lefties.
Jose Ramirez has fallen on some hard luck times:
Pretty consistent stuff with he xwOBA (green line) there, but the wOBA has been jumping around, and recently it’s hit a season-low. But J-Ram isn’t really wroth much discussion, nobody is trading anymore and you’re never going to consider sitting the guy. But maybe this will make you feel a little better after a dud week couple of weeks from him.
Spencer Torkelson and Max Kepler have been smashing lately, and those were both players that hit free agency in a lot of leagues. You’re reaping the benefits lately if you acquired them at some point - because they’ve always been pretty cheap.
