MLB Daily Notes - August 21st
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
I took my oldest boy to the South Bend Cubs (A+) game last night. Not having the baby there really opened things up this time, and I was able to watch 1.5 full innings of baseball. Some dude named Grant Kipp pitched. He had like a 1.50 WHIP showing on the scoreboard so I was like damn it’s gonna be walk city, but look at him! The guy qualbanged:
I get a kick out of the fact that I can use my own resources here to look at data from these low-level minor-league games. Fun times. It looks like the Cubs took a 3-2 win. No homers, which is good because the fireworks would have scared my kid.
They have the high inflatable park thing going on out in left field, and then they had some nice Bell’s Two Hearted for me and some ice cream for the kid. We sneaked down and sat right on the dugout, and an usher gave us a ball. Really cool night. When you have multiple kids, you don’t get much one-on-one time with any of them, so I’m going to try to do that kind of stuff more as often as I can.
That’s one of the closest I’ve even been to a professional fastball. The starter we were watching was sitting 92-93, and I have to say - I could not even see the ball. I used to think that if you gave me ten swings at a big league fastball, I could foul one off or tap one into play, but I don’t think I would make that claim now. There’s the off chance of getting lucky. I mean, you could just stick the bat out of there and have some percent chance of touching it - but man, 90 miles per hour is really freaking fast. The mound looks so close to the plate when the ball is moving that fast. It’s amazing anybody can hit anything. With how much pitchers have gotten over the years, you would have thought at some point they’d just overmatch the hitters and they’d have had to move the mound back or down a little bit - but the hitters have kept pace. Crazy sport we follow here.
Pitcher Review
22 whiffs from Robbie Ray and a 31.2% Ball%. That’s a recipe for major success against, especially against the White Sox.
6.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 9 K, 0 BB, 22.9% SwStr%, 54.2% Strike%, 31.2% Ball%
There will be ups, and there will be downs. My advice continues to be just to continue to start him and take the good with the bad.
Zack Wheeler took on Reynaldo Lopez, and they were both great.
Wheeler
6 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 8 K, 0 BB, 20.6% SwStr%, 51.5% Strike%, 32% Ball%Lopez
5 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 10 K, 1 BB, 20% SwStr%, 55.6% Strike%, 33.3% Ball%
We had not seen Lopez in the Majors since July 28th - when he left after just three innings with an elbow thing. He avoided significant injury, and now he’s back - so that’s good news for him and good news for the Braves. He was very, very good yesterday with those ten strikeouts in five innings.
Most interestingly, he had his best velocity of the season.
That did not translate to whiffs on the four-seamer (6.3%), but a 60% Strike% on the pitch was amazing.
Reynaldo is having one of the most surprising and impressive seasons in the league this year.
Reynaldo Lopez By Year
2022: 65 IP, 24.8% K%, 4.3% BB%
2023: 66 IP, 29.9% K%, 12.2% BB%
2024: 114 IP, 24.9% K%, 8.4% BB%
Two things we worried about with him when he came into the rotation
→ Innings
→ Walks
He has almost doubled his innings from last year, and he has gotten the walk rate to a good spot.
I want to stay positive on Lopez after this great return, but I have to mention once again the flyball and home run stuff - especially since we generated that data yesterday. He has the third-lowest HR/FB in the league (pitchers with at least 100 innings):
The K% is good, not great, and the GB% is very low. So you would predict a pretty high HR/9 from him - but he’s kept it extremely low.
Anyways, he’s doing something right - and he’s back in the rotation now, so he should be used in fantasy.
Cole Ragans didn’t have a great box score result:
5 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 5 R, 9 K, 3 BB
But the 18.6% SwStr% and 52.6% Strike% was great. Keep starting Ragans, obviously, I don’t even really need to mention him here - but we have been keeping an eye on the velocity for awhile now, so we’ll hit that again:
Pretty good work from DJ Herz:
5.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 7 K, 2 BB, 14.0% SwStr%, 48.4% Strike%
His season stats (MLB):
13 GS, 4.15 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 28.3% K%, 7.9% BB%, 20.4% K-BB%
That’s a really good K-BB%, but the other stats haven’t followed.
We have just 24 SPs this year with 10+ starts and a K-BB% over 20%. As a group, they have a 3.42 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. Herz’s ERA is the fourth-worst on that list, and his WHIP is the worst.
Here are the worst WHIPs with a K-BB% over 20%:
Herz will be very interesting for drafts next year, and I think I’ll be into him as a late round pick.
Mitch Keller went nuts with a 9:0 K:BB against the Rangers. That was a refreshing comeback start after his two disasters.
Shane Baz got it done against the Athletics, but he did not do it with the whiffs.
7.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 K, 3 BB, 9.8% SwStr%, 44.6% Strike%
He’s now at a 19.4% K% and 9.1% BB% for the year - pretty scary stuff. I’d be out on Baz.
Luis Gil walked six.
3 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 K, 6 BB
He’s now near a 13% BB% on the year. It’s amazing he’s had as good of a season as he’s had with that huge issue. That’s the second-highest walk rate in the league for pitchers with at least 15 starts (Triston McKenzie), but the K% has compensated enough to land him at a 3.39 ERA, so the Yankees will keep rolling him out there. I still think he’s eventually destined for a bullpen spot - and he could end up being a pretty wicked reliever.
One more thing before I go - Nick Pivetta has been on a very strange run of it. Last night didn’t go well at all:
5 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 2 K, 3 BB, 8.3% SwStr%
He’s now given up 20 earned runs in his last five starts (24 innings). HOWEVER, his K-BB% over that stretch is 22%. He’s given up two homers in each of these last five starts. So there’s bad luck there. I can’t say that last night was bad luck, but prior to last night, it certainly was.
He has a 37:7 K:BB since the all star break, but a 3.0 HR/9. Keep starting him, and buy low if you can still pull that off this late in the year.
