MLB Daily Notes - August 24th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
Prop bet trackers:
The big news in baseball today is the big news about Ohtani tearing his UCL. If you haven’t heard… well, he has a torn UCL. They said they don’t know if it will require surgery but he’s done pitching for the year.
This is meteoric news in baseball with the context around it. The Angels’ decision to keep Ohtani and buy at the deadline, in retrospect, is one of the worst decisions in recent baseball memory.
It’s also pretty tragic for Ohtani as he enters free agency. This certainly costs him all kinds of money. Who knows, maybe it even puts the Angels back in the discussion. I would think that if a team is going to give this guy a 10-year contract or something, they would just have him have the surgery to repair the UCL right away. Maybe that’s even what the Angels would do if he had several years left on his contract. They can’t really put him under the knife now six weeks before he hits free agency, that would be a wildly questionable decision unless it was absolutely clear the guy needed it. Although, in theory, it would help them for next year because whoever ends up Ohtani won’t have him as a pitcher until 2025! All of these angles!
But I’m mostly talking in the dark here because there are plenty of details we don’t know. There’s no reason to think the Angels are telling the full truth about the extent of the injury, so who really knows!
The Angels asked the world of this dude for the last three seasons, and it seems like they deserve some of the blame here. Ohtani is top-ten in the league in PAs since 2021 while making 74 starts. It was really hard to belive he could make it through even one of these seasons healthy, and he darn near did it for three in a row. It would seem like Ohtani wanted to pitch every fifth day while DHing every day, so there’s no real fault here - I really don’t think they forced him into this, but it definitely shows you the downside of asking so much out of one guy - and it also makes you wonder if they would have done the same if they had planned on re-signing him to a mega contract after this season.
Lots of potential things to think and pontificate over here, and I’m sure we’ll hear all kinds of takes about it this week and into the offseason.
His free agency will be a really interesting story. How much will the big teams value Ohtani at given that he is very, very questionable to be able to pitch in 2024? How much is he worth as just a hitter? It’s never our money to give away, so it’s easy for us to talk about - but if I were one of these big market GMs I’d probably go after him at about 80% of what I was going to prior, have him get that elbow surgery immediately - limit him to DHing next season, and then hope for the best after that. The on-field stuff is really only part of the story with Ohtani when it comes to determining his market worth. He pays you back a good chunk with merchandise and ticket sales, and it would seem likely that he can still be an elite hitter next year either way - although if it takes until January to sign him and get him the surgery - maybe the recovery won’t be enough by the beginning of the year.
I don’t really have any useful advice for dynasty leagues. If you have him in a league where you can use him as a hitter and pitcher - that’s probably too valuable to sell at a depressed price after this news. You can probably get a good hitter season out of him next year and then squeeze another few years out of him as a pitcher/hitter - and that’s just a cheat code in fantasy. It’s also possible that his days as a very good fantasy pitcher are over - because who knows what happens after another elbow surgery. I don’t know, we’re into way too much speculation now. Here’s hoping for all the best for Ohtani, he’s given us a lot!
Pitchers - Yesterday
Charlie Morton does it again!
7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 11 K, 1 BB
He put up 19 whiffs and a 17.4% SwStr%. The Strike% was above 51% again, so he has been just fantastic in these two starts since that scary seven-walk start on August 11th. Just another lesson on not reacting to one start.
Aaron Civale popped off for 20 whiffs and a 58.8% Strike%. That’s pretty unlike him. He went through five innings on 80 pitches and went for a 9:0 K:BB, but he did give up three earned runs along the way.
No pitch mix changes or anything like that, but his cutter and curveball were a little bit closer to each other in usage than normal. Just a good performance. He’s not the worst option for fantasy moving forward.
The man of the day was probably Cole Ragans who exploited the soft matchup with Oakland to have his best career outing by plenty of metrics.
6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 11 K, 0 BB
He went for an 18.2% SwStr% and a 52.5% Strike%.
The velo kicked up, and he reached 101 with the fastball:
But let’s not get crazy here, a 27% SwStr% on a fastball is just not a thing that can happen frequently. The Athletics are a putrid offense and Ragans took advantage, but the good news is that the changeup is excellent and he has all these tools to use - he’s a very enticing fantasy pitcher, and if somehow he’s still available in your leagues you should get him now. He is up to a 49% Strike%, a 14.3% SwStr%, and a 19.5% K-BB% this year - great marks across the board (the K-BB% is 26% since joining the Royals).
Don’t be fooled by Luis Severino’s strong outing:
6.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 K, 2 BB
He had just an 8.2% SwStr% and a 42.3% Strike%. Now, the Nationals reduce whiff rates a ton - but he wasn’t earning strikes either - and what the Nats gain with contact they lose with quality of contact - they’re not a good offense, but hey at least Severino can feel good about his box score line at least once here before the season ends.

Pitcher/Pitch Trends
It probably doesn’t mean anything, but Corbin Burnes has been throwing the slider much slower recently:
Not a big deal there because the cutter has been fine:
Reid Detmers also is losing slider velocity, but his fastball velo is also down:

George Kirby went a little weird yesterday throwing a ton of sliders:
His season slider usage is 19%, so it was very interesting to see that double. He ditched the sinker yesterday (season 22% usage), so this was a clear approach change. It generated a 17% SwStr% and nine strikeouts in 5.2 innings - which you would expect because sliders get whiffs and sinkers do not.
Kirby’s slider hasn’t been good to this point in his career (9.3% SwStr% this year), but it was way up there at 20% yesterday - so maybe he feels like he’s improved the pitch and will throw it more. If he really has improved the pitch and will throw a lot more of them moving forward - the K% is going to shoot up, there’s just no way that doesn’t happen when you go from sinkers → sliders. That also means the GB% will likely go down, and maybe he’ll give up more hard contact. It’s not necessarily a good thing, but it’s definitely a difference worth tracking.
