MLB Daily Notes - August 2nd
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
Pitcher Review
The Rockies continue to impress with their ability to hand out solid pitching lines to bad pitcher. Carson Fulmer has thrown just 99 innings in the Major Leagues since 2021 with a 4.36 ERA. HE has posted a 5.11 ERA with a 17% K% in 12 AAA starts dating back to last year. He’s no good, and yet:
6 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 8 K, 1 BB, 24.1% SwStr%, 50.6% Strike%
We are at the point where pretty much any pitcher facing the Rockies away from Coors Field is in play for fantasy purposes. So if you’re looking for a streamer, it looks like Martin Perz and Randy Vasquez will face off against the Rockies at home this weekend.
Shota Imanaga had his start derailed in the seventh but overall was good with the 20.9% SwStr% and 52.7% Strike%. You don’t usually give up ten hits and four runs along with a 7:0 K:BB, but that’s how it went for him last night.
The Charlie Morton update:
Season:
20 GS, 4.02 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 23.3% K%, 9.0% BB%, 47.1% Strike%Last 10 GS:
55 IP, 3.74 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 21.7% K%, 8.3% BB%, 45.8% Strike%
He’s been serviceable overall this year, and he threw six scoreless yesterday with a 16.7% SwStr%.
Sonny Gray added nine strikeouts to his tally in seven strong innings (five hits, two runs). He has kept that K% above 30% all season long, something I did not think he could do.
The arsenal:
Gray has embraced that his four-seamer isn’t anything special, and has really thrown the kitchen sink at guys. He has five solid pitches, and he’s figured out the right way to use them all together.
Max Meyer has the reins off of him. He made his second start on a normal rotation, and the Marlins have said he’s just going to finish out the season as a normal SP would. Yesterday:
5 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 7 K, 1 BB, 14.1% SwStr%, 54.3% Strike%
Solid strike throwing yesterday but a bit of bad luck with the hits and runs allowed. That brought his season Strike% to 47% (league average) and the SwStr% to a strong 13.5% mark.
Solid arm and some big upside given what we’ve seen from him a few times this year. I think he should be owned in 12-team leagues or deeper.
Trevor Rogers had a bad Orioles debut.
4.1 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 3 K, 3 BB, 45.7% Strike%, 37.2% Ball%
His season numbers are just bad; I don’t feel the need to keep saying that.
It’s one of those cases where you just don’t have to look any further in evaluating him after you see the K-BB%.
So let’s look at some bad pitchers. Going back to 2023 and seeing pitchers with at least 25 starts and then sorting by K-BB% ascending.
It is hard to stay in a rotation with a single-digit K-BB%. I wouldn’t bet on any of these guys having prominent roles in rotations in a year or two, and the ones that currently have jobs are all on bad teams besides Perez, Lorenzen, and Rogers - and all three of them are only on good teams because they were traded this week. That’s pretty funny, actually, that three guys that were just moved at the deadline show up here.
Hitter Review
Vinnie Pasquantino is a name we haven’t talked about much in the notes. He homered twice yesterday to bring his season line to:
441 PA, .262/.318/.441, .759 OPS, 12.7% K%, 7.7% BB%, 14 HR
The most impressive thing with Pasquantino is that he can make so much contact while maintaining a decent amount of power.
He has an 86% Contact%. If we look at everybody above 85%, you have a bunch of light-swingers. The group average is a 3.7% Brl% and a 32.5% hard-hit rate. Vinnie is at a 7.5% Brl% and a 45.8% hard-hit rate.
There are only three hitters in the league this year with a contact rate above 85% and a hard-hit rate above 405. I bet you could guess them! It’s Vinnie, along with Mookie and Yandy. Something about your first name ending in an “ee” sound.
Here’s the data on the 85%+ Contact% group:
Vinnie P is a long way from a fantasy study, given the relative lack of homers, but he’s going to have some years with a really high batting average and a bunch of RBIs. He’s in the top 70 on my player rater this year, mostly propelled by the 76 RBI.
Paul Goldschmidt homered again and has an .811 OPS since July began with six homers (18 PA/HR), an 11.7% Brl%, and a 25.9% K%. He is still a long way from his career heights, but he’s still been a useful fantasy bat with 17 homers and six steals. He’s the #7 1B on my player rater currently, and I think he would even be a bit higher if we were looking at the last 60 days or so.
Michael Toglia also added another homer. He is becoming the definition of “empty power”.
244 PA, .213/.275/.507, .781 OPS, 32.4% K%, 7.8% BB%, 19 HR, 4 SB
His .294 ISO is fifth-best in the league, which is a great reason to stop caring about ISO. I don’t know why people care about that dumb stat. Why not just look at slugging?
If you don’t know what ISO is, I’ll tell you! It stands for “isolated power,” and the calculation is simply slugging percentage minus batting average. So the aim is isolate how often guys are hitting for extra bases.
The problem is that it almost rewards bad batting average. If Toglia hits a single today, his ISO will drop. But a single is a good outcome!
Most of the names atop the ISO leaderboard are great hitters:
Judge, Ohtani, Tucker, Devers, Toglia, Santander, Rooker, Soto, Ozuna, O’Neill, Vientos, Henderson, Harper, Ramirez, B Lowe, Witt Jr., Pederson, K Marte
But you get a much more useful leaderboard by just looking at slugging instead. Togia is #5 in ISO but not even in the top 20 in SLG because he’s making outs almost every other time he’s not hitting homers with his 32% K%. And he’s a total disaster in OBP leagues.
Masyn Winn hit his eighth homer of the year. He’s had a very nice real-life season for the Cardinals; he would seem to be locked into their lineup for years to come. For fantasy, though, he’s much less interesting.
412 PA, .279/.327/.416, 8 HR, 9 SB
He is outside of the top 110 on my player rater. He’s not horrible in any of the five standard categories, but he’s not really good in any of them either.
That could change next year if the Cardinals lineup improves. This is certainly a guy capable of hitting for a high batting average, and at age 22 he’ll likely add power, but I don’t think he’s a standard league guy right now and I don’t think I’ll be very interested in drafting him next year either.
David Fry got back in the home run box score. That was his his first homer since May 31st. That means he’s hit just one homer in his last 148 PAs.
His season:
284 PA, .285/.387/.456, .843 OPS
Pretty good! But since June:
148 PA, .231/.297/.321, .618 OPS
The lesson here is that we should always be skeptical of the out-of-nowhere early-season breakout hitters. You just won’t see many guys suddenly turning into good MLB hitters in their upper-twenties. It can happen (Rooker…), but more often than not they fizzle out pretty quickly.
Remember some of those other April breakout hitters?
Notable April OPS
Colton Cowser: 1.004
Mike Tauchman: .955
Connor Wong: .948
Blaze Alexander: .941
Josh Rojas: .938
Ryan Jeffers: .936
Wilyer Abreu: .917
Josh Smith: .917
Jurickson Profar: .908
Those are the guys above .900 in April that were legitimately surprising. They have all fallen off from those numbers. The guys that have still had a decent fantasy impact would be Smith and Profar, and to a lesser extent Cowser, but it’s been pretty mediocre production for the rest of them ever since.
It’s Friday, so we’ll get a full slate preview out later on. Peace out!
