MLB Daily Notes - August 3rd
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
Prop bet trackers:
Two pitchers at the top of the list that we’re not used to seeing!
Dane Dunning absolutely crushed through the depleted White Sox lineup
7.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 11 K, 1 BB
He had 15 whiffs on a 14.7% SwStr% and went for a very high 54.9% Strike.
His full-season stats are nothing special to say the least:
So I wouldn’t read into this. He’s had two of these spike games recently but the rest of his season is middling, although he rarely goes out and has a very bad start.
The key point to learn here, I think, is that the White Sox are a lineup to target - big time. You probably already knew that, but if you didn’t - now you do.
The top five matchups in the league by pitcher points scored per batter faced:
OAK 0.77
MIN 0.74
KC 0.73
CWS 0.71
SEA 0.71
While we’re here, the bottom five:
ATL 0.50
TEX 0.52
LAD 0.53
ARI 0.56
HOU 0.56
The other guy is Cole Ragans. He was with the Rangers and is now pitching for the Royals. He’s split his year between AAA and MLB this year, doing this:
In the minors, he has posted a very good 16.3% SwStr% and 50.1% Strike. In the Majors so far it’s been a 13.1% SwStr% and a 47.6% Strike%.
The pitch mix shows a pretty good changeup with a nice four-seamer, and a seemingly mediocre curve/cutter combination.
Ragans is 25, so he’s not some young budding kid - but he’s shown that ability to pitch in the Majors and could very well be a guy worth using in fantasy down the stretch and maybe even in 2024.
Gerrit Cole is bringing the strikeout rate up, he’s gone for a 29.6% K% in his last ten starts to get to 27.4% for the year now. The walks have stayed in control at 6.5%, and he’s having another just another great season, currently the #2 roto pitcher based on my player rater.
Grayson Rodriguez also had another solid start with 15 whiffs, a 15.6% SwStr%, a 53.1% Strike%, but he still gave up three earned runs and couldn’t make it through six innings.
He’s had two stints in the Majors this year, so let’s compare.
First stint:
10 GS, 11.9% SwStr%, 47.2% Strike%, 37.7% Ball%, 26.5% K%, 10.0% BB%, .372 xwOBA, 35% GB%
Second stint:
4 GS, 14.3% SwStr%, 50.7% Strike%, 34.2% Ball%, 23.3% K%, 9.3% BB%, .287 xwOBA, 58% GB%
More whiffs, more strikes, but fewer strikeouts? That’s a little bit strange, but that’s what a four-start sample can do. The GB% difference is striking, and it would make me suspect that he’s changed his pitch mix! I have no idea if he did yet, I am about to check - the suspense!
Pitch Mix Changes
Pitch Type: Before → After
FF: 45% → 53%
CH: 21% → 26%
SL: 15% → 13%
FC: 12% → 3%
CU: 7% → 6%
So he scrapped the cutter and added more four-seamers and changeups. The changeup is typically a ground-ball pitch, but a four-seamer typically isn’t. The ground balls since his return have come on the changeup (75%) and the curve (100% on a very small number of balls in play). Hard to argue with RESULTS, but I don’t think a guy throwing a four-seamer 53% of the time is going to have a GB% above 50%, and Grayson has certainly benefited from not allowing a homer since the return.
All things considered, it’s very good to see him with the high SwStr% and lowering the walk rate. There is probably positive regression coming in the K% department, but negative regression coming in the HR department. Will they evenly offset each other? Which will win out? I have no idea! But Grayson is a guy to start in most leagues while we figure it out.
Kutter Crawford threw five more scoreless innings yesterday and was pulled after just 81 pitches to watch the bullpen immediately get blasted. That was annoying for me as a guy starting Crawford in a QS league, but maybe the Red Sox were on to something there because he was not pitching particularly well under the hood
6 whiffs, 7.4% SwStr%, 51.9% Strike%
The whiffs weren’t coming, he wasn’t walking anybody (5:1 K:BB) either. So that’s weird, maybe they’re just not wanting him to be a guy to face the lineup the third time through. But here’s an update on the pitch mix (since 6/1):
Six different pitches are available to him a 14.1% SwStr%, a 34% Ball%, and a .280 xwOBA. That is really impressive stuff. Garrett Whitlock and Tanner Houck are set to start rehab assignments, so the Red Sox once again have some decisions to make, although it would seem that there’s room for all right now. They’ve been going with Paxton, Pivetta, Crawford, and Bello lately. Maybe that just leaves one slot for Crawford/Whitlock/Houck, but it would seem to make more sense to me that they would either go to some kind of six-man thing or put Houck in the bullpen since he’s spent a lot of time there. Crawford is stretched out, has been healthy, and has been pitching well - so I feel pretty good about him sticking. I’d pick him up if he’s available.
Dylan Cease got bombed by the Rangers, which shoudn’t be surprising. What a year he’s had.

Pitcher/Pitch Trends
Shane McClanahan had some increased velo on his slider but gave up five earnies and then said he had forearm tightness. So that’s something to worry about if you have him.
We also see that Crawford has been losing velo on his four-seamer, that’s something I hadn’t noticed before. In June, he was always coming in around 94.2, but in the last three starts, he’s been under 93. If we check the yearly innings tracker, we do find that he’s approaching a new max:
So maybe there’s some fatigue on the arm there. Some other notable arms already exceeding their previous max innings loads (using 2021 and 2022)

Brady Singer before July:
16 GS, 9.3% SwStr%, 44.3% Strike%, 18.9% K%, 8.4% BB%, .352 xwOBA
Since July:
5 GS, 12.6% SwStr%, 46.6% Strike%, 22.6% K%, 5.3% BB%, .288 xwOBA
Looking a lot more like the 2022 guy recently, and the K-BB% has been pretty respectable in these last five starts. That’s a good sign, I’d still be hesitant to even stream him - but maybe he’s back in the conversation if you’re a believer in these shorter-term samples. He joins eight other pitchers on the Magic Formula Qualifiers below.

Hitters
Big day for the double-barrel! Five teams scored 10+ runs:
CHC 16
ATL 12
TEX 11
SD 11
LAD 11
The Cubs and Padres both hit five homers.
Riley Greene had a double-barrel and is now slashing .306/.371/.475 on the year with 9 homers and six steals. That’s all in 307 PAs, so this is close to a 20-12 pace. The K% is up there at 27%, but the BB% is fine at 9%. In his 83 PAs since returning from injury:
.333/.398/.560, 4 HR, 24% K%, 16.4% Brl%, 44% GB%
That’s beautiful stuff. Only seven other hitters have gone above a 15% Brl% and below at 25% K% in this time frame (Soto, Riley, Olson, Betts, Ad Garcia, Seager, Seth Brown).
The Tigers as a team still have a low .679 OPS (fifth-worst) since July 1st even with everybody healthy and getting some good performances out of these young guys, so I guess I was wrong about them not being a team to target with pitchers in the second half (since the break they have an even worse .669 OPS).
Josh Jung is still struggling with the K%, but not to the same extent as he was in late June.
Lars Nootbaar has a 1.121 OPS since the break with a 13.5% Brl% and six homers.
OPS Leaders Since the Break
McCormick 1.276
Freeman 1.259
Flores 1.215
Olson 1.206
Ohtani 1.194
Riley 1.190
Soto 1.185
Lowe 1.152
Kim 1.131
Nootbaar 1.121
I suppose it’s past time for me to finally talk about Chas McCormick. This season:
270 PA, .286/.375/.547, 15 HR, 12 SB, 27% K%, 12.3% Brl%, .334 xwOBA
The strikeout stuff is not great (69% Contact%), and he has a high .354 BABIP, but he’s keeping the ball off the ground (38% GB%). I think this is a pretty big over-performance, but he has certainly bolstered your fantasy team if you picked him up at the first sign of life.
