My wife wanted to watch Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, so we did that the last two nights (yes, it takes two nights for us to watch a movie). That’s an old Dick Van Dyke movie.
I had a lot of thoughts during it, mostly ones questioning what the point of the song they’re currently singing is. But that was the taste back then, and people still like it today I guess. Nostalgia. People had more of a patient taste for singing and dancing back then, nowadays we just want to get right to and through the point.
I’m just struck by how much the world has changed in the last 50-100 years. And I wonder if it really has changed more in these last 50 than other periods of 50 in the past. Everybody for all of human history has looked back 50 years and decided that things are way different now. But I don’t know, I do think it’s been a cultural transformation unlike others. The Internet is the big one, I think. But what about airplanes. Can you imagine someone being in 1900 and then getting time portaled to 2000 and just seeing planes and helicopters and stuff in the sky. Wild stuff, man. You used to just not be able to get places, and now you can get anywhere in like a day and you don’t even have to be super duper rich to do it.
I didn’t really care for the movie, but seeing old stuff like that does make you wish we could take certain parts of the culture back to how they were back then.
Cade Cavalli finally showed up! He made an MLB start back in 2022, so this wasn’t his career debut, but basically it was. He had all of four innings under his belt prior to that, and he doubled that last night.
4.1 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 6 SO, 1 BB
In the minors this year:
74 IP, 5.35 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 24.7% K%, 9.4% BB%
So that’s not good. He does have velo and got a bunch of whiffs yesterday. It would be a really interesting debut to me if he hadn’t been so bad in the minors.
He posted just a 12.7% SwStr% in AAA. I really doubt he’s going to be above that in the Majors, but hey 96-98mph fastballs and a curveball can work. We’ll see where he goes from here. This is a guy who was a top pitching prospect a long time ago but has just had so many injuries that it’s probably not happening now. But good to see him get back to the league.
Spencer Arrighetti returned and gave up 11 hits in 3.2 innings. Nice! I would say he’s still a guy to own in deeper fantasy leagues. And even some standard ones, depending on where you’re at. His Major League career update:
Pretty horrifying ratios, but that K%! He had a really nice K-BB% in the last few months last year and had a bunch of bad luck. I’m not saying he’s going to be a positive on fantasy teams this year, but I think it’s at least possible.
It was a hit parade yesterday man!
Strider: 4.2 IP, 11 H, 5 ER, 6 SO, 2 BB
Suarez: 6.1 IP, 9 H, 5 ER
Flaherty: 4.2 IP, 8 H, 5 ER
Abbott: 6.2 IP, 7 H, 4 ER
Andrew Abbott has been really bad lately.
He has just a 16.3% K% and a 6.0% BB% with nine homers allowed in his last 11 starts. That’s a 4.28 JA ERA on an 11.4% SwStr% and a 32.4% Ball%. The guy just isn’t that good and it was pretty easy to see that the early season success wasn’t going to stay.
And then of course we mention Gavin Williams who took a no-hitter into the 9th inning. The Guardians let him throw 126 pitches to try to finish it. I guess that’s what you have to do when half of your pitching staff gets kicked off the team for betting on games.
8.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 6 SO, 4 BB, 11.1% SwStr%, 40.5% Ball%
He went for just a 42.9% Strike% which is really bad. Williams does not have command, but he counteracts that a bit with being pretty tough to square up. His good stuff helps that.
George Kirby has pitched like a true ace since July 1st. He’s fully back and will end up as a top 10 SP in drafts next year as long as he finishes healthy.
The 16.4% SwStr% is way up in these last six starts. So is the Ball% at 34.5%. I wonder if this was a conscious decision. Last year I talked a lot about how maybe he should throw some more balls. Go for more chases, waste some extra pitches. The trade off will be a few more walks, but more strikeouts would follow as well.
It seemed like for most of his career he’s just been pumping strikes without thinking about much else.
His two-strike zone rate last year was 44.7%. This year, it’s 39.6%. So yes, he has changed some things!
I have this “zone by count” table on the dashboard where you can see pitcher zone rate by count:
So that’s kind of neat just to see how certain guys approach things. Here’s Kirby:
You know who has been really disappointing this year? Wyatt Langford. That guy is hitting .240/.321/.413 with 15 homers. Not what you thought you were getting! I went ahead and pulled up the lowest OPS marks for 80%+ owned hitters in 300+ PA:
Francisco Lindor has been pretty disappointing as well, although he’s still going 20-20 this year (21 homers and 16 steals currently).
Langford also has 20-20 in his sights (15 HR, 15 SB),a lthough I’m not sure he’ll hit five more homers!
Lawrence Butler is the same situation. A bad .231/.301/.402 slash line but 15 homers and 17 steals.
And also Oneil Cruz! .208/.304/.405 this year with 18 homers and 34 steals.
Here’s the 15-15 club ordered by batting average ascending:
Only Jose Ramirez, Bobby Witt Jr., Byron Buxton, Elly De La Cruz, Jackson Chourio, Shohei Ohtani, and Kyle Tucker are on 20-20 pace with a .270+ batting average. Not a great year for the true five-cat stud! And Tucker and Ohtani are both trending in the wrong direction currently.
Zach Neto kinda sucking too:
Zach Neto
April-May: .273/.330/.527, 13 HR, 9 SB
June-Aug: .265/.328/.425, 7 HR, 13 SB
He’s still been pretty good, I guess. I’m not sure we ever should’ve believed in Neto as a 30-homer threat, there’s not a ton of raw power there. But there are a lot of really good signs with this kid and I’m guessing he’s a top 6 or 7 SS pick next year.
That’s all I have time for today!
