MLB Daily Notes - August 7th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
Prop bet trackers:
My typical morning is getting woken up between 5:30 and 6:30 by baby Trea and then pulling myself out of bed to take him downstairs and get him a bottle and change him and all that stuff. I will start running all the Python notebooks to get all of this business up to date, that all takes about 20 minutes but it’s mostly automated so I don’t have to do a whole lot. I try to at least get the projections up and then I’ll put the computer away and do stuff with the kids until my wife is up. Then I’ll come down here to the basemenet office at 8am, but that’s officially when I have to start working.
If there’s not a ton going on with work, I can spend some time writing the notes, but I usually get nothing done on the notes before 8am. Last year, without Trea baby, I could do most of this before work - but it hasn’t been happening this year. I’ve tried my best to put out good, detailed stuff here as often as possible - but it’s definitely not been what I want!
Today there’s just so much stuff to do and it’s already 8:20, but I’m going to push all of that back and get a good solid update from the 3 days of games I didn’t talk about over the weekend.
I’m going to load up the dashboard and go TEAM BY TEAM and highlight the last 3 days (Friday-Sunday), and then I will pay the consequences of this decision later.
Diamondbacks
Two good starts from Gallen & Kelly, Kelly had 9 strikeouts and a 16% SwStr% to bounce back from a little bit of a down patch. Ryne Nelson got roughed up giving up a 1.408 OPS against the Twins. I had him as a sleeper this year, and that hasn’t turned out to be true. The reason for that was that he graded out nicely in Stuff+ last year, so that’s a warning sign about relying on Stuff+
Lourdes Gurriel hit two more homers, but not much else happened offensively. The Diamondbacks are hitting just .227/.302/.373 since July 1st for a .675 OPS - the fourth-worst in the league.
Braves
Max Fried was great in his return with eight strikeouts and a 12.5% SwStr% on 72 pitches. A .107 xwOBA allowed - good to see.
Bryce Elder and Charlie Morton both gave up five earned runs, Elder’s bad second-half continues
Ronald Acuna slashed .571/.600/.786 this weekend without homering, his all-time fantasy season continues.
Orioles
Bradish was bad with a low 9.2% SwStr% and five walks. He didn’t allow a run still, but it wasn’t a good outing for him
Kyle Gibson struck out nine to keep his really shockingly good run of starts going
Good weekends from the young guys Henderson and Westburg
Cubs
Kyle Hendricks got crushed by Atlanta for eight hits and seven earned runs, but Steele & Assad survived
Seiya Suzuki has been benched for Mike Tauchman recently, he logged just 3 PAs over the weekend. He’s a drop in standard leagues right now, if not deeper leagues as well.
Reds
Andrew Abbott, Graham Ashcraft, and Lyon Richardson all went under 9% with their SwStr%. Richardson debuted and threw just 66 pitches in three innings, and was not good. Abbott was bad with five walks and six earned runs - it’s been a bit tougher on him in his last few starts, but I’m holding.
Ashcraft did have another positive result with eight innings and just five hits and two walks, but the K’s are low so I would expect some more bad starts ahead of him - but he’s okay to use in good matchups.
Encarnacion-Strand started three games but hit just .100 in 10 PAs, his season so far has been underwhelming and I don’t think he’s a must-own guy at this point. The Reds as a team put up just a .596 OPS this weekend, so they’re struggling a bit.
Guardians
Great weekend for Andres Gimenez with a 1.218 OPS in 13 PAs, he’s been a lot better lately.
Logan Allen got it done against the weak White Sox lineup, but still just an 8.3% SwStr%. I think he’s a streamer only consideration now.
Xzavion Curry threw 65 pitches and got through five innings with a 20% SwStr%. He’s not interesting for fantasy, but he’s been throwing more pitches at least
Rockies
Least interesting team in the history of fantasy baseball?
White Sox
You know what Tim Anderson did on Saturday. He conveniently had a “scheduled off day” on Sunday. That was the most interesting thing to happen in baseball over the weekend, but it doesn’t mean much for fantasy - just drop Anderson if you haven’t already. I don’t see how you can square up to fight like that and not get like a 10+ game suspension, especially when you’ve only hit one homer this year. And let’s be honest, you deserve a longer suspension if you only have hit one homer in the last calendar year.
Michael Kopech walked more hitters than he struck out
Tigers
Kerry Carpenter hit a bomb, which was good because he’s been quiet.
Spencer Torkelson hasn’t done much lately after a really nice week after the break, just a .200/.273/.300 line over the weekend for him - the Tigers hit only two homers (Baddoo the other)
Reese Olson struggled (4 ER, 3 K, # BB in 5 IP), and Tarik Skubal was good again but only threw 5.1 innings. Seems like he’s just going to be capped around 90 pitches.
Astros
Seven dingers for them (Yordan x2, Meyers x2, Diaz, Altuve, Maldonado)
Verlander & Brown got it done without many strikeouts (4 for each of them in 7 and 6 innings respectively), Jose Urquidy returned but got beat up by the Yankees (1:3 K:BB, 9.7% SwStr%). He’s still an add in deep leagues where available, he’s never been a great fantasy pitcher but he’s rarely been bad - so he can help a deep league fantasy team.
Royals
All of their starters got roughed up, almost a 9.00 ERA among the three (Marsh, Lyles, Greinke)
Freddy Fermin went deep twice this weekend and remains a very solid DFS play at catcher when he’s in the lineup, I believe he hit 4th or 5th yesterday
Another dinger for Bobby Witt Jr. who has been one of the best hitters in fantasy for the last couple of months
Angels
They lost all three games. It didn’t take long for their “buy” strategy at the break to look very, very foolish
Grichuk, Moustakas, Moniak, Thaiss, and Rengifo all went deep. Ohtani hit just .167/.231/.250 and struck out in 54% of his PAs.
Chase Silseth: 7 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 12 K, 1 BB against Seattle. He’s someone to look at more closely - and maybe we’ll do that later
Reid Detmers got jacked up to the tune of 9 hits and seven earnies against Seattle on Friday. Hopefully it’s just a blip, but he is a guy that in the past has dominated for stretches only to go on very bad runs of starts
Dodgers
Bobby Miller lasted just 3.2 innings against the Padres throwing 82 pitches in the process. A 7.3% SwStr% - not good. Ceiling is still sky high for the future but I don’t think he’s a great fantasy option right now
Michael Grove is now an opener? Ryan Yarbrough bulked behind him
Lance Lynn fired off six strong innings against the Padres last night, but just a 6.3% SwStr% and a .392 xwOBA - seems like he was quite lucky. The four-seamer usage came back down to 46% and the cutter up to 17% - so the first start wasn’t a sign of a pitch arsenal overhaul like we thought it might have been
Hitters hit, the Dodgers went for an .820 OPS in three games with homers by Smith, Betts, Outman, Freeman, and even Amed Rosario!
Marlins
Alcantara had a 7:0 K:BB but gave up four runs on three homers to the Rangers. Luzardo had a very similar line also giving up three homers but mostly limiting the damage and striking out eight.
Chisholm Jr. got hurt, Josh Bell hit just .182/.308/.273 this weekend with his new team, but Jake Burger hit a dinger
Brewers
Brandon Woodruff returned and dominated the Pirates in his 85 pitches. 18.8% SwStr%, 50% K%, no walks - phenenomal. Slot him right back in the top 10 SPs moving forward.
Burnes had a lower 11.2% SwStr% and almost was beaten by Bailey Falter (I watched the game!), but David Bednar blew a save. Burnes just isn’t a top-five SP right now, the whiffs aren’t there
The offense hit just one homer (Santana) and had a poor .551 OPS against some not-great pitchers the Pirates rolled out
Twins
Dallas Keuchel made a start for some reason? Remember at the beginning of the year when Bailey Ober couldn’t even find a rotation spot because they were so loaded - and now Dallas Keuchel is up here? He only gave up one earned run but didn’t strike a single batter out and gave up eight hits
Kenta Maeda struck out seven Snakes without a walk
Max Kepler went yabbo three times to bring his season OPS to .767. He has 18 homers and a non-horrible .238 batting average, so he’s been a good value pick this year
Mets
Their three games were started by Tylor Megill, Jose Quintana, and David Peterson - it’s amazing how far this team has fallen since March.
Just one homer and a .537 team OPS
Yankees
Cortes was great in his return (26.6% SwStr%, 8:1 K:BB in four innings)
Rodon was awful again, but the 55% Strike% and 15.5% SwStr% has me still thinking he can get it together and be a very useful pitcher in 2023, but I don’t blame anybody for abandoning ship if you need to win right now
Luis Severino is just trash. A 6.9% SwStr% on 87 pitches and a 1.134 OPS allowed. One of the worst pitchers in the league - who saw that coming! There’s something in the air up there in NYC…
Athletics
A bunch of people got hoodwinked by Luis Medina. He was a very popular streamer last week and he walked FIVE Giants yesterday in just 3.1 innings. Gross!
Phillies
Not a good start in sight. Nola gave up 5 ER, Sanches gave up 6, and Walker gave up 4 - and they all took the mound against the ROYALS. Disappointing stuff. I’m still obviously starting Nola every time, and I’m not dropping Sanchez in deeper leagues - but it’s possible he gets the boot from the rotation with Lorenzen there now. He had a nice 7:1 K:BB despite the six earned runs.
Two homers from Nick Castellanos and one from Trea Turner after they had been just torching fantasy teams for weeks. Harper hit a bomb as well, so that’s a positive sign.
Pirates
Johan Oviedo put up another gem yesterday with 7 shutout innings, but he still walked three batters with a bad 38.6% Ball%. But at least eh SwStr% was way up there at 14.9%. He seems to an “effectively wild” kind of guy - but sometimes it’s not effective…
Bailey Falter debuted and put up a good result against the Brewers. But a 9.5% SwStr% and really, really low 42.9% Strike% is bad to see (and just a 29% GB% - but that’s too small of a sample to really care about)
Bryan Reynolds has been great, and hit two homers over the weekend
Endy Rodrigeuz also added a dinger and now has a respectable .747 OPS in the Majors with a 12.% Brl%, but a horrifying 36% K%.
Padres
Blake Snell walked four more to extend his walk lead. He’s dominating the field with 72 unintentional walks this year, second is Kopech at 67 - and then third are Josiah Gray and Jack Flaherty way back there at 56. But, of course, it came with eight strikeouts and just three earned runs allowed.
Rich Hill got trucked by the Dodgers
It looks like sometimes I’m using periods at the end of these bullet points and sometimes I’m not, so not a great sign for my writing ability there
Mariners
They rarely throw a bad SP at you. Luis Castillo gave up 10 hits and seven earnies to the Angels on Friday, but Kirby and Miller pitched well on Saturday and Sunday. 10 strikeouts in five innings for Miller - and no walks!
Ty France homered again and put up a 1.025 OPS, Teoscar Hernandez also homered and went for a 1.385 OPS over the weekend. But of them have OPS below .600 since the break though, so pretty disappointing stuff across the board from the M’s offense this year
Giants
They only played two games? What kind of team doesn’t play on a Friday? tf?
Cardinals
Their three games were started by Steven Matz, Adam Wainwright, and Zack Thompson. They might be the worst rotation in the league now with Flaherty and Montgomery gone. But Matz pitched pretty well with a 14.6% SwStr%. He got through six innings and gave up just one run and struck out six. He’s kinda sorta good!
Nolan Gorman has been going nuclear again, two homers on Friday and a 1.143 OPS over the weekend. I hope the people that got Gorman in the draft/April just decided to start him through the thick and thin - because overall he’s had a very good season for the price you acquired him
Tyler O’Neill is somewhat alive as well with a homer and a .762 OPS over the weekend
Rays
Glasnow was scratched yesterday with a back issue. That’s not what you want to hear, but I haven’t looked for an update since - so you’ll have to do that yourselves!
Aaron Civale debuted and stunk up the place
Zack Littell is indeed a traditional starter right now and went six shutout innings against Detroit, but he betrayed us with just one strike out after the over 3.5 K prop bet looked so good on Friday
Yandy homered again, Franco had a 1.192 OPS with a homer of his own
Rangers
Three more dingers for Adolis “first rounder” Garcia
Two more for Seager
The Rangers put up a .995 OPS in three games - ho-hum!
Jon Gray disappointed with five runs allowed (although it looks like just 3 earned now?), he couldn’t get through six, but he did get the win thanks to that offense. All 3 Rangers SPs got the win, and Montgomery was good in his Rangers debut with a 6:1 K:BB in six innings.
Blue Jays
Alek Manoah wasn’t bad with 6.2 IP, 3 ER, 2:2 K:BB
Chris Bassitt had a good one (7 IP, 1 ER, 6:3 K:BB)
Davis Schneider is the fantasy man of the weekend as a guy that came up quietly after mashing in the minors, and he went .692/.733/1.154 in 15 PAs over the weekend. Two dingers, an 18% Brl% and a low 13% K%. In the minors this year he was great with a .969 OPS, 21 HR, and a low 22% K%. You can pick him up if you need a middle-infielder, but I would imagine the good production won’t stay around for too long - although it’s possible!
Nationals
Three bangers from Lane Thomas, and all off of right-handed pitching. He’s now hitting .290/.333/.491 with 19 homers on the year, who in the world saw that coming!? He has a .728 OPS against RHP and an insane 1.041 mark against LHP
Joan Adon just made me look like an absolute assface after I tweeted about him being the worst pitcher in the league just to watch him put up a qual-daddy against the Reds with a 7:0 K:BB in six innings. My mom’s name is also Joan.
There ya go, a very rough and poor-grammar-laden weekend recap for all 30 teams, except the Rockies who are stupid.
And now I have to quit typing to you, please say thanks/screw you in the comments - that would really make my day.
