MLB Daily Notes - August 8th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
It is 10:27 as I type these words, the first words of the daily notes. It’s one of those days where there are work meetings and people asking me to fix things. Very sad day, but the daily notes have built up a good amount of clout this week so I think I can survive a day in the pits.
It looks like pretty much everything went normally on the pitching side of things. Tarik Skubal was great
7 IP, 3 H, 2 Er, 9 K, 2 BB, 20.6% SwStr%, 53.9% Strike%
Blake Snell gave up a homer but was otherwise very strong:
6 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 8 K, 1 BB, 17.2% SwStr%, 52.7% Strike%, 32.3% Ball%
He probably threw too many strikes honestly. A 32% Ball% is elite, but I’m not sure if that’s optimal for a guy like Snell.
Cole Ragans toughed out another nice outing (although runs going as unearned helped his line a great deal):
6.1 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 7 K, 2 BB, 17.0% SwStr%, 47.2% Strike%
Velo is still in the tank though:
Chris Sale was nasty as usual but quite inefficient here:
4.2 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, 10 K, 2 BB, 18.8% SwStr%, 51.0% Strike%, 35.4% Ball%
Someone asked me via DM to explain his inability to get deep into games recently. As we talked about in the podcast yesterday, the reason for a pitcher’s inefficiency is typically one of two things:
Throwing too many balls
Allowing a high BABIP
Sale’s last five outings (PC=pitch count):
7/9: 5.1 IP, 100 PC, 33 Ball%, .417 BABIP
7/14: 5.0 IP, 79 PC, 30.4% Ball%, .286 BABIP
7/25: 7.1 IP, 94 PC, 29.8% Ball%, .083 BABIP
7/31: 5.2 IP, 100 PC, 32.0% Ball%, .375 BABIP
8/7: 4.2 IP, 96 PC 35.4% Ball%, .692 BABIP
I have bolded the reason for his inability to get through six innings in each of those four recent starts. One time he only threw 79 pitches on July 14th, and that was planned just to give him a little bit of a lighter load heading into the All-Star break. The other three outings, the ball rate was fine and he just gave up a high BABIP (his season BABIP is .257, so those were way out of the ordinary).
So the answer to the guy who asked me about this: don’t worry about it, he’ll be fine, it’s just a few bad luck things happening in the same month. Randomness!
Freddy Peralta hasn’t been all that special lately. Since June 14th:
10 GS, 4.12 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 26.7% K%, 8.9% BB%, 17.8% K-BB%, 1.65 HR/9
That’s probably some bad luck on the home run front, but an 18% K-BB% is lower than what we’ve come to expect from him.
Peralta Strike% by Month:
Mar-Apr: 45.9%
May: 48.1%
June: 48.2%
July-Aug: 46.5%
He’s still getting whiffs recently (14.1%), but before that he was above 15%, so the 26-27% K% feels correct. He’s never been fantastic at limiting walks, so I could see the K-BB% staying around 17-19% the rest of the way, but the good news is that he’ll likely allow fewer homers (1.41 HR/9 last year, 1.35 this year - neither of those numbers is good, but they’re both well below the 1.65 recent mark we mentioned above). So keep plugging in Peralta.
Kutter Crawford is on an incredibly rough stretch. In his last four starts he has a 10.61 ERA, a 1.66 WHIP, a 17.0% K%, and he’s allowed 13 homers.
He has faced four lineups that are pretty good at hitting the long ball, so there’s some forgiveness necessary there. It’s extremely hard to give up 13 homers in four starts. Like I would doubt that your average college pitcher would give up that many homers in a four-game stretch. So there’s some bad luck there to be sure.
He now leads the league with 27 homers allowed. In the second half he’s given up 13, and that almost doubles the guy in second place:
HR Allowed - Second Half
Crawford 13
Eovaldi 7
Montero 7
S Gray 6
Munoz 6
Pivetta 6
J Irvin 6
Stone 6
Abbott 6
Bad luck aside, Crawford has always been a fly-ball pitcher, and that sets him up to be more likely for these very bad stretches.
More concerning to me is the 17% K% and 12% SwStr% over this time. Before this stretch, he had a 24% K% and a 13.6% SwStr%. Those tough matchups will do that, so this might just be a temporary blip. I’d keep rolling him out there, or maybe even try to buy low if that’s still an option in your league.
Luis Gil gave up five walks and no runs. That’s really tough to do! I looked it up and it actually happens more often that you’d think… 46 times since 2021 has someone gone 5+ walks and no runs. It’s happened 14 times this year…
It only happened six times 2021, 10 times in 2022, and then 17 times last year. Goofy stuff.
Gil now has a 28.5 K%, a 12.0% BB%, a 13.2% SwStr%, and a 39% Ball% on the year. For SPs with 15+ starts, that’s the second-highest walk rate (Triston McKenzie) and the seventh-highest Ball% (Quintana, McKenzie, Hudson, Gibson, Stroman, A Suarez).
It can be kinda fun to classify guys by their Stuff+ and Location+ combinations. Gil would classify as “great stuff, bad locations”. Some of those other guys:
Ryan Pepiot (118 Stuff+, 98 Loc+)
Blake Snell (118, 98)
Carlos Rodon (123, 97)
Taj Bradley (115, 97)
MacKenzie Gore (113, 98)
Framber Valdez (112, 97)
Luis Gil (110, 95)
Flip it around to the “bad stuff, great locations”:
Paddack
Taillon
Imanaga
Ober
Mikolas
Suarez
Woods Richardson
Littell
Gomber
Stripling
Waldron
J Gray
M Perez
T Williams
My wife just called me asking if she can get me something from Panera Bread for lunch. It feels like it should still be 9am to me… the MLB slate is about to start today, yikes! And to top it off, I’m about to be completely broke since my wife is getting lunch from Panera Bread.
Talk to you later!
