MLB Daily Notes: Friday, April 29
I’m traveling this weekend, back to the homeland of Pittsburgh for the Pittsburgh Marathon. My wife and I have been marathon guys in our adulthood (mostly half marathons, but I did knock out a full one back in 2018). I decided to forego the race this year to let her really go for it while I’ve watched the kids through her training and on race weekend and whatnot, but the problem is that now she’s like six weeks pregnant and super-duper sick every morning.
So she’s likely going to have a miserable time running 13 miles while wanting to yack the whole time. I will be earnestly praying that God helps her out and just skips the morning sickness that one time so she can have a good time running, so any help in that regard is appreciated.
This is also to say that I will do my best to get the notes out and keep the projections up to date with lineups Saturday and Sunday, but it might be a bit of a struggle, so just a heads-up on that front.
Someone else who is super sick is Kyle Wright, who capitalized on another soft matchup yesterday to put up another solid start. This one was a bit less convincing with four walks, but he racked up another eight strikeouts and allowed just three hits, and had eight of his 13 balls in play stay on the ground. He has still yet to face a really good offense (CIN, SD, MIA, CHC), but there’s no reason to think he won’t continue to be quite good moving forward.
Aaron Judge and Pavin Smith were the top hitters yesterday, both with two barrels and a dinger. Smith is yet another Diamondback to pop up on these notes (we’ve had to talk about Varsho and Christian Walker in recent days), despite having a pretty rotten season overall. He has a 20.5% Brl% now with a 23.8% K% and a 12.7% BB%. Somewhat interesting stuff there.
It really does seem like Arizona should be scoring way more runs than they actually are, besides the complete and utter disaster season of Ketel Marte and Carson Kelly so far, they’ve looked pretty good under the hood.
Some pretty high barrel rates there with low strikeout rates, but I guess the common thread is the high walk rates. Are they walking too much? It’s a mystery.
Let’s take a quick look at the very bottom of the JA hitter ranks. This morning the algorithm ranked 242 hitters based on the granular data of 2022, here are some notables below #200
204 - Bryan Reynolds
205 - Joey Gallo
208 - Joey Votto
210 - Whit Merrifield
216 - Bobby Dalbec
223 - Bo Bichette
224 - Julio Rodriguez
225 - Ketel Marte
233 - Bobby Witt Jr.
236 - Jarred Kelenic
238 - Randy Arozarena
239 - Franmil Reyes
If you fantasy team has more than two of those names on it, you probably aren’t having a good time of it. Will be very interesting to see if these guys can bounce back or if the JA algorithm is more or less on to something. Let’s get to the notes.
