The Astros have called up their top prospect Brice Matthews. And we have another case on our hands of the air being taken out of the balloon immediately. Wecan know quite a bit about hitters from looking at waht they’ve done in the minor leagues. The first thing you look at when a rookie hitter gets the call up is their strikeout rate. And it’s not a good thing for Matthews.
Here’s what I’ll do when looking at one of these guys. First, I go to the basic stats on the MLB & MiLB Stats Dashboard v3 dashboard. Pull up that Hitter Profile tab and search for the player.
You can make it so the “year” drop down includes all years, and then it will break down their whole career (since 2021, but most top prospects debuted professionally some time after 2020) by level.
We see that he has struck out a bunch every single year, and things haven’t been improving as he’s gotten more experience and moved up to higher levels.
But there are slightly different ways to turn into a hitter that strikes out a lot. If the guy has spent some time in AAA, we can get a lot of good information from the MiLB Statcast 2025 dashboard.
What you’re looking for there is stuff like swing rates, contact rates, and batted ball profile stuff.
With Matthews, we see a low 41% Swing%. The AAA average (45%) is a little lower than the MLB average (47%), probably just because more strikes are thrown in the Majors. But 41% is low, so the guy takes some strikes and gets himself into deeper counts because of that. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It turns into a ton of walks, as you’ve seen above. And it doesn’t have to turn into a high K% if the hitter has a good contact rate. But Matthews doesn’t. His Z-Contact% (the percent of the time he makes contact, fair or foul, on pitches in the strike zone) is just 75%. The AAA average is 83%. We’d like guys around 85%, but you can go lower than that if they have a lot of power.
Going from the minors to the Majors makes you pretty likely to have your Z-Contact% reduced, and it’s really hard to survive in the Majors with a Z-Contact% below 75%.
I did a little minors vs. Majors K% and Z-Contact% comparison in a Google Sheet here.
The question is what are the chances that Matthews improves his Z-Contact% in the Majors? This is a question for the short term. I’m not saying anything at all about what the guy might do two years down the line. I’m just trying to figure out what he’s most likely to do for the next three months.
So I have a list of every qualified hitters (50 zone swings in both the minors and Majors this year) and a comparison of their zone contact rates. Here are the biggest decreasers from MiLB → MLB:
It’s not to say it’s impossible to handle the transition. There are some guys who have been better at this in the Majors than the minors:
But you know, that doesn’t make a ton of sense. How could you be better at making contact with better pitches?
What you’ll notice with those names is that these are mostly guys with Major League experience. We have guys either who have rehabbed or just guys who are veterans and hanging out in AAA because they couldn’t quite stay on the MLB roster this year.
It’s probably more an approach change than anything with those guys. I did my best to quickly filter this only to the young guys who have been trying to come up and get earn their first real shot at Major League playign time. Only Jace Jung and Agustin Ramirez have improved their Z-Contact% in that sample, and the average change is a loss of six points.
That is a lot of words and data to make a pretty simple point. I think Brice Matthews is going to come up and strike out like 40% of the time and then probably hit the bench or go back to AAA. I wouldn’t add him in fantasy leagues.
Going now from a young, new, exciting hitter to an old, known, boring pitcher. Miles Mikolas:
5.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 6 SO, 1 BB
That was his best start of the year as measured by fantasy points scored.
I don’t know why I’m mentioning it. Obviously nobody is starting this guy in a fantasy league or a DFS lineup or anything. But I could see Mikolas inspiring some feelings around baseball. In the age of 100mph fastballs and high strikeout rates, Mikolas has been a blast from the past. He’s hung around the Major Leagues for way longer than anybody should have expected, so shout out to him.
Remember that this guy was pitching in Japan for three years between 2015 and 2017.
You don’t expect someone who goes from MLB → Overseas to ever come back to the MLB and stick around for long. And maybe he shouldn’t have stuck around for this long. It seems to me like the 2018 season he had immediately upon returning from Japan buoyed his career. He posted a 2.83 ERA that year, but it was on a 3.93 SIERA with a .279 BABIP and a 76% LOB%. He was really lucky that year. He has an ERA around five over these last three years, so it’s not like he’s been a net positive on the Cardinals over this long contract.
Or maybe he has, who knows. He’s thrown more than 1,000 innings for them, and that’s worth something. But let’s stop talking about Miles Mikolas.
Bryan Woo took a no-hitter deep into the game against the Yankees. He had it spoiled late and the Mariners ended up losing the game. And he struck out just five.
Woo is a unique pitcher. He’s one of those guys who does extremely well with a lower strikeout rate and it’s not due to good luck.
I checked every pitchers xwOBA allowed in the middle of the strike zone this year. And Bryan Woo isn’t even in the top 50! Here’s your top 15:
Woo is down there at #63:
Here are your worst:
We are talking about a small number of pitches since I’ve limited this to just this year, so there’s some randomness here. But you can tell the difference between the names at the top and bottom of the list.
Wheeler, Crochet, Fried, Cabrera, Webb, etc. Those guys either have really nasty “stuff” or really pristine command, or both! I would expect Woo to move up this list since he’s been a guy who has so consistently generated soft contact in his career.
Extending the data sample back to include 2024, here are your top 20:
And there we get Woo into the top 15.
This is sort of a weird stat since it’s requiring pitches right down the middle. I would imagine that the one of the goals of every pitch thrown is for that pitcht to not end up there. The perfect pitcher would never be on this list because he’d never throw a pitch middle-middle.
Let’s change this to just be xwOBA on pitches in the strike zone that were put in play. Now we’re really talking. These are the true soft contact generators. I’m so excited about it that I’ve put it in an interactive table.
Right away we see three relievers. I don’t watch many games, but I’ve seen enough to know about Tyler Rogers and Tim Hill. What do they have in common? Really weird release points.
Here’s a fastball from Rogers to Nick Kurtz in just a dreadful location, but he gets away with it and generates a lazy fly ball:
And here’s Tim Hill doing the same:
So one good way to generate weak contact is to throw the ball from a location where nobody else throws it from.
Both of these guys stretch the release point plots.
Back to the point! Our guy Bryan Woo ranks #5 here, and #2 for starting pitchers behind Justin “The Magician” Steele. And he also does that with the help of an uncommon release point.
It’s not nearly as obvious when watching Woo. You might not even think anything of his release point, but it’s weird.
So there you go. Bryan Woo is real good.
I’m going to wrap the daily notes there.
My baseball writing urges come in waves. Sometimes I’m really jazzed up to write, and sometimes it feels more like an obligation. My jazzed% is way higher than my obligated%, so we’re still in the green territory. But I got to like a 112 Jazzed+ last night and started a new post series called Most Surprising Stats. I was going to just do one surprising stat from each team and go division-by-division. But then I ended up writing a ton of words about two stats coming from Yankees’ hitters that I found. So I changed the the title name from “Most Surprising Stats - AL East” to “Most Surprising Stats - New York Yankees”. I didn’t finish it, I’ll finish it today. But then I was lying in bed and realized like damn did I just start a 30-part post series in the middle of the freaking season? And there’s pretty much zero chance I’m going to write one of them for every team, but I’m also not going to undo what I did last night. So we’ll see where it goes. Maybe I’ll just hit the most popular teams, or something.
That will start today, and I’ll have a slate preview out for the nice slate of Friday night baseball we have.
