I noticed Elly De La Cruz on the 30-Day K% Improvers. The one thing FanGraphs still does much better than I is offer quick and easy customizable rolling plots. Check it out:
We have also noticed that Mookie Betts has not taken a walk since June 18th. Taking the walk has always been a big part of his career, but things are changing.
As we explored in AL East Outliers yesterday, walk rates are highly correlated with swing rates. Betts is indeed swinging more lately, and he’s also seeing more pitches in the strike zone lately as pitchers have probably figured out that he’s not the same power threat that he used to be.
The guy is slugging .390 this year, down 100 points from last year and down 190 points from two years ago. He is not the same guy and who knows, might not even be a top 30 pick next year.
Chase Burns torched the Rockies with ten strikeouts. He walked three, but came in with a good 34% Ball%.
He fits into the Strider mold. Before a few years ago, we saw very few of these types of pitchers that threw 90% four-seamers and sliders and had a ton of velo and movement and struck out the world with all of it. But this is a pretty common prototype nowadays. Jared Jones was emulating it last year, Hunter Greene has been in that category probably even before Strider was. This is pretty much how Jacob Misiorowski is going about it.
The common thread through those names is a bunch of strikeouts but some home run issues at times. And… sadly… umm… elbow problems.
J-Mizzy is an All Star. Which is an interesting thing. He’ll have thrown fewer than 500 pitches in his career before appearing in an All Star Game. And this is one of those classic situations where I understand both sides of the argument. I could be on either team.
It all depends on your worldview. How do you view the All Star game? What’s the point of it? What’s it for? I believe the Greek word is TELOS.
Is it to show the game’s best and most exciting players? Or to show who the guys who are having the best seasons and being most deserving on that front? Seems to me like that’s just a question of personal opinion.
If I had to pick a side, I’d let Misiorowski in there. He’s really something to watch, and you should show him off while he’s healthy.
But you know what would be cool - if Misiorowski would reject it on the count of his small sample. I guess he’d be unlikely to use the term “small sample”. Maybe he’d go for just “I’m not deserving of this yet”. But the reason he’s not deserving is primarily about the small sample.
I dream of a day when guys like Jacob Misiorowski refuse to go to the All Star game on the account of small sample sizes.
Ryne Nelson sucked it up against the Angels. I’m personally not surprised. That guy has been a snake oil salesman his whole career.
I’ll never forget the Stuff+ models being all about that guy two years ago, so everybody got real excited, and then he just completely sucked for two years, and then they updated the Stuff+ models, and all of a sudden, he wasn’t good at all. You could write a book about that. And maybe I would.
The entire data modeling universe is just predicting outcomes based on inputs, and you train the thing to use previous inputs to see what outputs usually happen. But at any time, you can re-train the thing with altered inputs and change everything. You can rewrite history!
That’s a rough and not entirely accurate picture of it, but I’m rushing through things here because it’s Saturday morning.
Nelson had a streak of five starts with a 1.53 ERA and a .78 WHIP. Here it is:
The advanced stuff for that sample:
Pretty good even under the hood, but nothing stunning.
I’m considering re-jiggering the JA ERA to incorporate SwStr% and Ball% to adjust the K% and BB% inputs. That could be fun. The question is would it actually improve anything? But that’s something I could test. So maybe I’ll do that next week.
I suppose I’m obligated to say something about Cody Bellinger. He homered thrice last night.
That’ll shoot up the ole rolling wOBA.
His stats for the season:
His stats by month:
Since May 1st, he’s on the first page of the main dashboard when sorting by OPS.
Nick Kurtz is there too!
