MLB Daily Notes - July 12th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
I have a lot to write today and only about half the normal time to do it.
Pitcher Review
Paul Skenes was the man of the day. He threw seven scoreless, hitless innings and truck out 11 Brewers. There was a lot of angst in Pittsburgh about pulling him with 99 pitches while twirling a no-no in a 1-0 game, but it worked out anyway. The bullpen immediately blew the no-hitter but preserved the 1-0 win. Very interestingly, Skenes had just 11 whiffs. It’s not unheard of that a pitcher would have the same number of whiffs and strikeouts, but it’s uncommon. Only 14 times this year has a pitcher struck out 8+ with the same number or fewer whiffs.
The point here is that maybe we’ll see a slight down-tick in his strikeout rate moving forward. He’s at a league-leading 35% K% right now, and the SwStr% is 15th-best.
Hunter Greene hunted the Rockies and earned a lot of green on the spreadsheet. Shout out to me for that wordplay.
He is now at a 17.8% K-BB% with a 15.1% SwStr% and 49.5% Strike%. Very good numbers. He has still somehow avoided the long ball (46 PA/HR) despite a high FB% (31%) in Great American Ballpark. I think there will be some rough outings moving forward, but it’s also fair to say that his K% could end up at 30% instead of the 25-27% it’s been at for most of the season.
Jack Flaherty hasn’t quite been as dominant as early on. He struck out just four Guardians yesterday on a 13.3% SwStr%. Cleveland is a tough matchup for strikeouts, so we can forgive that. But let’s check some segmented numbers for Flaherty. He’s made 16 starts, so we can divide that into fourths.
One time when we were teenagers, my older sister asked me how many quarters are in a football game, and that was the moment I knew I was smarter than her.
Starts 1-4: 16.4% SwStr%, 48.4% Strike%, 29.1% K%, 3.9% BB%
Starts 5-8: 16.9% SwStr%, 52.8% Strike%, 36.3% K%, 2.2% BB%
Starts 9-12: 15.3% SwStr%, 50.4% Strike%, 35.6% K%, 4.6% BB%
Starts 13-16: 13.6% SwStr%, 48.3% Strike%, 27.8% K%, 6.7% BB%
If you could still bag a return that is priced as if Flaherty is a clear top-15 starter, I would do that. Meaning that my money would be him being outside of the top 15 SPs for the rest of the year. But I don’t think he’ll be bad or anything like that.
Shane Baz update
Only 160 pitches, so it’s hard to study. But I don’t love the 11.3% SwStr% early on. We’ll monitor that. It was a real tough matchup with the Yanks, but it didn’t go well:
68 pitches, 4.1 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 5 K, 1 BB, 13.2% SwStr%, 29.4% Ball%
That’s a pretty sweet SwStr% and Ball% combo. We know that Baz is one of the most electric arms in pro ball, the stuff has never really been in question. He should be owned in all leagues.
Justin Steele slapped up seven scoreless against the Orioles.
He is at a strong 49% Strike% on the year with a league-average 12.1% SwStr%. He does not waste pitches with the 31% BAll%, and once again he’s limiting hard contact with the best of them. It seems like Steele is just who he has always been - a guy who won’t strike out a ton of guys and will beat the indicators because of the deception and command.
Hitter Review
Spencer Horwitz hit a dinger and now has a .935 OPS on the season.
He leads the Blue Jays in xwOBA.
107 PA, .322/.430/.500, 4 HR, 10.7% Brl%, 14% K%, 12% BB%, .391 xwOBA, .299 xBA, 37% GB%
Lots of walks, and lots of balls hit in the air. He doesn’t have a ton of bat speed, and his exit velocities are pretty unimpressive, so it’s hard to imagine he’ll keep up a double-digit barrel rate. However, the sheer volume of fly balls he gets off will turn into a homer rate that might beat the expectations generated by the barrel rate.
The league leader in fly balls per plate appearance is Will Smith at 31% (322 PAs, 102 fly balls). Horwitz ranked #160 out of 373 hitters. He’s a little better when you use at-bats because that takes away the walks. He’s #123 in the league in that regard. That’s lower than I expected, given my first quick look at his stats.
But in an OBP league, he’s a pretty enticing target nonetheless.
Okay, I have to wrap it up. We’ll have waiver wire adds, a slate preview, and maybe even my rest of season 1B ranks coming out today.
