We have reached the All Star break! I woke up not really knowing what to do with myself. There was no hustle to get the projections running and everything updated. It will be a nice week off for me, I think. But by Friday I think I’ll be feeling like it’s Opening Day again. That first Friday back after the break is one of my favorite days of the season.
It’s possible I won’t feel quite the same way this year because my home league team is so garbage. I’m in 6th place out of ten, and I’m really not seeing the team making any big movements in the final 2.5 months. It’s not a good team. I started the draft with Yordan Alvarez and took dumb risks on guys like Matt McLain and Luis Robert and Roki Sasaki. I bought a handful of lottery tickets thinking that I could manage my way around the busts. But they all busted and I haven’t been able to manage my way around it.
So I don’t think we’ll have that classic two-week period in September when I’m updating you on my playoff matchup. But who knows, crazier things have happened.
Sean Manaea debuted yesterday for the Mets. He did not start the game but instead through 65 pitches in the bulk role. It was pretty good
3.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 7 SO, 0 BB, 20% SwStr%, 32.3% Ball%, 0.05 JA ERA.
That’s pretty good!
Eury Perez lit it up again:
7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 6 SO, 0 BB, 19% SwStr%, 28.6% Ball%
His last three starts: 35% K%, 1.7% BB%, 18.7% SwStr%, 33.7% Ball%, 0.94 JA ERA.
The fastball has been completely dominant with a 62% Strike% and a .189 xwOBA. He’s given up just one homer in these three starts.
As I’ve said a lot, Eury will give up some homers, but that’s fine if it’s coming with a 35% K% and a 2% BB%. Those numbers won’t continue for long, of course, but I don’t think a 32% K% and a 6% BB% is an unreasonable expectation the rest of the way. And I imagine he’s a top 20 or so SP for drafts next year.
Noah Cameron may have figured something out here.
His last three starts have been fantastic with a 20:4 K:BB and just two runs allowed in 18.1 innings.
The fastball still hasn’t been very good in this sample (8% SwStr%, 45% Strike%). But the changeup has been untouchable with a 28.3% SwStr% and an 80% GB%.
So we have one of those situations where he has a changeup, and the pitch the changeup is changing up is a bad pitch to change up from. He’s going to continue to deliver spotty results. You’ll have good outings, but you’ll bad ones as well. His season line:
→ 21.2% K%, 7.7% BB%, 12.6% SwStr%, 44.5% Strike%, 3.74 JA ERA, 1.45 WHIP+
I’d be pretty hesitant on him for the second half, but he’s probably a top 60 or so arm since the field is so thinned out currently.
Joey Cantillo threw 89 pitches, so he’s fully in the rotation as a traditional start now. The 6:0 K:BB was nice, but he gave up seven hits and four earned runs. Here are the marks from July since he’s started to ramp up after Luis Ortiz went away:
It’s another situation where the secondary stuff is way better than the primary fastball. And he doesn’t bring much strike-throwing ability with any of his pitches. You’ll get your strikeouts with the guy, and probably a few gems along the way, but I wouldn’t bet on him giving you anything but a poor WHIP and very outings clearing six innings.
Cristopher Sanchez wrapped up his stellar first half with 7.1 more strong innings. He gave up just one run.
He’s seventh in the league in ERA among starters with at least 15 starts. Here’s that leaderboard:
Brandon Woodruff made his second MLB start and struck out ten on 81 pitches. He has now struck out 47% of the hitters he’s faced without a single walk.
The four-seamer has been terrific with an 18% SwStr% and a 60% Strike% on 50 pitches. The sinker is a great duo with it, having a 68% Strike% and a 67% GB%.
That will be the key for him. Tunneling and commanding these fastballs. Woodruff was formerly a high ground ball rate guy. That hasn’t happened yet (35% GB%), but he could get that up if he wanted to just by throwing more sinkers.
What I’m realizing now is that the cutter is probably actually his slider. It was called a slider in AAA, but now it’s labeled as a cutter in the Majors.
That’s the problem with cutters. You don’t know exactly what they are. Some guys’ have cutters who are a lot more like their four-seamer, and some are more like a slider. I will say that the early 7.1% SwStr% on it isn’t encouraging, but we should pump the brakes there since it’s just 28 pitches thrown.
He threw plenty of sliders, changeups, and curveballs before his injury. If you call that cutter a slider, his pitch mix looks a lot like it used to. But if you call it a cutter, it looks a lot different.
Regardless, I can’t believe how good he’s been. I really don’t think he’s anywhere near an SP1, but I can’t say much with any level of confidence right now. There’s no doubt he should be started in every league when the second half begins. And then we’ll see where things go from there.
Corey Seager looks like he’s going to have a massive second half. He finished as one of the hottest hitters in the league over these last few weeks.
Since June 16th:
.300/.418/.600, 1.018 OPS, 7 HR, .313 xBA, .472 xwOBA
That’s the third-highest xwOBA (Judge and Soto). The rest of that list (xwOBA leaders over the last four weeks):
Kyle Stowers was one of the biggest surprises of the first half. He finished his first half by adding three homers to the tally.
He finishes with a .293/.365/.543 line with 19 homers on a 28% K%. It was not steady production. There was a huge slump in the middle of it. That made it look like the beginning of the season was a mirage.
From May 16th to June 21st:
110 PA, 0 HR, .228/.291/.297
I probably would have cut him loose at some point during that. He has been striking out a bunch all year. I think it was reasonable to think those 6-7 weeks from April to mid-May were just the result of some luck and over-performance. And then you saw him be terrible for more than a month there.
But the before and after that stretch were so elite that it makes the whole picture look pretty elite.
I suppose you have to roster and start the guy, but it’s not going to shock me if he ends up doing pretty poorly in the second half. His splits:
Looks like two completely different hitters. And his swing is weird. He has one of the shortest swings in the league, and that usually means a lack of bat speed, but not with Stowers.
You could argue that a short and quick swing is the optimal swing. I’m not sure I would argue that, but I could see that being optimal.
Short swing = more contact
Fast swing = more power
So putting those two things together would give you the ability to do both contact and power at the same time. But then it’s confusing because Stowers does strike out a lot. I don’t know, kind of a weird player.
In any league of depth, obviously you’re plugging Stowers in your lineup daily if you can. And the next time he goes cold, you should just stick with him, I guess! But it could be a real trap. I’m not really helping anybody here, am I?
Roman Anthony has been hitting the ball hard quite often. He’s been showing up on my auto tweet about the most hards hit balls over the last 100 swings. But the results haven’t been anything special yet:
120 PA, .265/.375/.402, .777 OPS, 2 HR, 11.7% Brl%, 20.8% K%, 12.5% BB%
There’s a lot of good news in that profile though. Few guys go for a double-digit Brl% with a K% under 22% and a good walk rate.
He has been extremely patient with a very low 37.6% Swing%. The issue has been the inability to launch. He has a 58% GB% and a poor 19% FB%. That’s your issue there.
How hard he’s able to hit the ball gets him some “cheap barrels”. By that I mean they are barrels that are hit so low that they don’t truly have a chance to go over a fence. This is the Oneil Cruz problem. And it’s not even really a problem. A barreled line drive is a great outcome, it’s just not a homer.
Anthony has all the tools of a stud power hitter. I don’t think anybody needed to hear that conclusion from me. What is most impressive has been his strikeout rate. He was at 21% in AAA and has maintained that into the Majors.
He has an 82% Zone-Contact%, which is nothing elite, but it’s pretty damn strong for a guy who hits the ball this hard. I’m surprised at how good Anthony has been. He’s one little tweak away (hitting more balls in the air) from having a massive second half.
That’s the final daily notes of the first half! I’m going to get to work on a home run derby preview, and I’m going to try my best to just take some time to chill this week.
