We begin today being stunned by Quinn Priester. He goes into Dodgers Stadium and throws a gem, leading the entire day in fantasy points scored.
6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 10 SO, 0 BB
Here’s how he attacked:
Looks like we’re missing some velo data from that game… but you can see the 15.6% SwStr% on the sinker and the 21.7% mark on the cutter. Those are quite uncommon for those pitches. But Priester was cooking last night.
We have picked out June 10th as the pivot moment for Priester. Since then:
Pretty impressive stuff, checking a lot of boxes. A 54% GB%, a 28% K%, a 3.8% BB%. The 12.6% SwStr% and 34.6% Ball% don’t quite support that K% and BB%, but they aren’t bad numbers either.
It’s just strange to me that someone can be so bad and then just suddenly be so good without making any clear change. Unless there’s a change here I’m not seeing. I really wouldn’t have bought much into Priester before last night, but it’s hard to turn your nose up at that kind of outing against the Dodgers as the cherry on top to this 600-pitch sample where he’s been very, very good.
You may have noticed something new in that graphic above. I have once again enhanced the main dashboard, this time in the pitcher luck category. I have renamed “Pitcher xStats” to “Pitcher Luck” and have changed it a bit:
I show three luck metrics right at the beginning:
→ BABIP
→ HR/FB
→ RISP H%
BABIP and HR/FB are known, I think. The averages we’re looking at this year is around a .290 BABIP and a 15% HR/FB. Anything well above or below those marks could be considered luck in one way or another.
The new one is RISP H%. This tries to emulate LOB%. It is, simply put, what percentage of the hits you allow come with men on base. There’s not going to be much skill there, if any. It’s not about a raw number of hits you’re allowing, it just looks at your total hits allowed and sees how many of them came at very inopportune times.
The league average is 21%. It will correlate highly with LOB%, and you can use those three numbers altogether to get a really nice picture of pitcher luck. I’m pretty excited about it.
Sandy Alcantara pitched last night, and he’s been one of the least lucky SPs in the league by these marks. 41% of his hits allowed have been with men in running scoring position.
It’s true that Alcantara is putting a lot of guys on base, and therefore throwing a higher number of his pitches with men in scoring position. So this isn’t the perfect luck stat, but I think it’s going to be a positive for us to keep an eye on. I will try to do a full explanation and analysis of the stat next week. We want to figure out if it’s prone to regression to the mean. If it doesn’t, then it’s useless, but I’m very confident that it will be.
Sandy’s line last night:
6 H, 8 H, 4 ER, 2 SO, 2 BB, 45.4% Strike%
Not good. While I was typing that I had the idea to add a moving average of JA ERA to the pitcher profile tab. And then I liked that idea, so I did it. Let’s go back to Priester and show that:
Man that’s nice. I love Tableau so, so much.
The second half has me charged up, but I’ve also begun looking forward a bit to the offseason. Not because I want baseball to be done, but because I love writing up teams and players all winter. I think those team previews are my favorite thing to write. The fun never ends here.
Dylan Cease! 21 more whiffs! He now leads the league in whiffs with 326. He was great, but inefficient last night.
5.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 10 SO, 0 BB
Only four hits and zero walks, you would think he would have sailed through six. But it must have taken him some extra pitches to grab those ten punchies, because he threw 94 pitches to get those 16 outs.
But yeah, you’ll take that start. As mentioned yesterday in the slate preview, Cease was and is the most obvious buy-low player in the league right now.
He is top 15 in the league in JA ERA. He has an elite 22% K-BB% and a sick 17.2% SwStr%. He’s been so, so good for strikeouts.
But you can see the luck data there, a high .326 BABIP with a 24.5% RISP H%, which is almost four points above the league average. It’s not an absurd number. The issue has just been the number of multi-run homers he’s given up. He gave up seven homers in his final three starts of the first half. That’s a problem. And giving up homers is largely the pitcher’s fault, I don’t want to make an excuse for these guys. But Cease has usually been good at limiting homers, and that’s swelled up a bit this year to 1.2 HR/9.
If he can rein that in a little bit, he’s going to be one of the best starting pitchers in the league in the second half because everything else is just so dominant.
Taj Bradley kept the good times moving with six scoreless innings against the Orioles. He hasn’t allowed a home run since June 18th (five starts), and hitters are at just a .231 xwOBA over this time. It feels like he’s playing with fire a bit because he still isn’t getting strikeouts (19% K%), but he’s been finding every bit of the weak spots in the bats for like a month now.
It’s not something you want to hitch your wagon to, but the Rays will take it, and so will fantasy owners.
The one guy we were watching closely was Slade Cecconi. He had a really freaking weird start. I watched it, or at least I was flipping around and keeping an eye on it. My wife is out of town right now, so I watched baseball all night last night. It was wild. I was actually watching games. I got to see what the Rays stadium actually looks like and what some of these new uniforms are like. I watched the Phillies take a tough loss to the Angels, which sucked because I had put a little bit of money on them to win just so I could try to push myself more and more towards actually being a fan of them. But by like 9:30, I was all tired out, and I started watching John MacArthur clips on YouTube again. And then I saw that this Democrat rep from Texas was on Joe Rogan. He’s a proclaimed Christian, and he was defending a lot of stuff that Christians don’t defend very often. So that was really interesting to me, and that took me to bedtime. I’m not a normal guy.
Anyways, Cecconi had cruised through seven innings and was getting a ton of outs really fast. He started the night with five straight innings under 15 pitches and didn’t give up a hit until the fifth. But he also didn’t get a strikeout until the 7th. Really strange.
So he went into the 9th for some reason and broke down there, and ended up giving up six earned runs on eight hits. Seems like a pretty mean thing to do to the guy, it’s not like the Guardians bullpen was taxed. And it was a pretty mean thing to do to me as well since I started him. Imagine how good that start would have been if they had just used someone else for the ninth.
I can’t say it was an encouraging start. Even before the ninth, he wasn’t fooling anybody. His SwStr% finished at 5.6% for the night. It was a really weird start, so I’m just going to move past it and keep starting him until this run of elite matchups ends.
Brandon Pfaadt threw seven scoreless innings. He’s a guy I could see having a strong second half.
He has a 21% K-BB% and a .238 xwOBA allowed in his last four starts. But he still hasn’t figured anything out against lefties, so the struggles against those hitters will continue. As we saw a month or so ago, teams get as many left-handed bats as possible in the lineup when they face Pfaadt. He had faced the highest percentage of LHB in the league when we last checked, and I’m sure he’s still way up there.
But he has good command, and he’s always been quite good against righties, so he’ll have plenty of good outings along the way. And the team context is nice.
Sean Manaea was indeed pretty limited, throwing just 69 pitches, but he was really good once again. His short-season numbers:
It is all about the release point. I saw some clips from him and yeah, he looks really unique when throwing the ball.
Lodolo and Lopez are the only starters similar to that. Chris Sale is the dot right above the T in “Tyler Gilbert”. Someone asked me that last night on Twitter, so I’ll go ahead and answer it here, where there’s only like a 5% chance that they’ll see it.
It’s good to be back on the daily notes, and I’m looking forward to another day full of baseball. Thanks for reading!
