MLB Daily Notes - July 21st
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
Outs props are off to a ripping start at 1-9:
Also lost our two recommended BB and K bets, so another bad day on the algo prop betting front. But the good news is, I’m not betting any of these myself - so shout out to me! It’s pretty fun for me to track every day so I’m going to keep doing it:

Pitchers - Yesterday
Spencer Strider had the weird start (although it’s becoming not very weird for him) where he goes absolutely nuts with whiffs (26 of them), but ends up with a bad ERA result because he gives up homers. 13 strikeouts, but two barrels on three strikeouts and therefore four earned runs. A nice WHIP performance though with a ((1+4)/6=0.83) result there.
So he’s up to a 9.8% Brl% and 34% FB% allowed. That’s the 8th highest FB% and a bottom-25 Brl%. I’m perfectly happy to accept a 10% Brl% if the K-BB% is at 33%, I think he’s still a total fantasy ace - but the hard contact stuff just might be here to stay given his limited pitch arsenal.
This is something that should be studied though - do two-pitch pitchers get barreled up more often than pitchers with more weapons? What I know is true is that four-seamers get barreled the most by far (10.6% league-wide), so a pitcher throwing a ton of four-seamers will likely have an inflated Brl% because of that - so that would complicate the two-pitch analysis thing. Most two-pitch guys, in my experience, are four-seam+slider - so we’d somehow have to control for pitch type in order to separate the two different possible affects I just described. More to come on that later, maybe. For now, obviously, start Strider every time.
But just like that, Corbin Burnes is back in the SP1 discussion. 10 more strikeouts for him and a dominant outing. He now has 23 strikeouts and no runs allowed in his last two - looking like his old self.
He once again did it with elevated curveball usage, throwing that one 26% of the time yesterday. He was 55% cutter. Here’s how the pitch mix has looked in these last two brilliant outings:
He was around 15% curveball usage before these two, so this seems like a conscious change - and one that’s likely to stick around given these two results.
Hogan Harris went for a 21.6% SwStr%, which was something we didn’t expect. Haven’t looked at it him much this year, but here’s the breakdown:
His changeup went for a 39% SwStr% yesterday - so it was good, but that was seemingly an outlier start so nothing to really focus on.
Kyle Gibson had his second big SwStr% day in the last three, doing it against the Rays this time.
Those Rays have really cooled off. Here are their hitting slash lines by month:
April .281/.351/.527
May .252/.333/.443
June .260/.327/.413
July .215/.277/.370
I’d consider them a neutral matchup for pitchers from here on out.
Andrew Abbott had the best start of his young career yesterday throwing eight scoreless innings and giving up just one hit on six strikeouts and two walks. It was a nice 14.2% SwStr%, but a weirdly bad 44% Strike%.
44% Strike%
39% Ball%
17% BIP%
It was still a 44% FB% yesterday, but they were all caught. For the year now
9 GS, 26.4% K%, 8.5% BB%, 12.9% SwStr%, 47.9% Strike%, 36.2% Ball%, 23% GB%, 24% LD%, 44% FB%, 9.4% Brl%, .291 xwOBA, .192 BABIP
The thing about fly balls is they do get caught a very high percentage of the time - so a low BABIP is probably to be expected from Abbott, but obviously not this low.
Abbott is really putting me through the ringer this year. Here’s his full game log from the “P Logs” tab on the dashboard.
So I was really concerned about those low SwStr% in his first three starts, but since then he’s gone 15.8% - so that hasn’t been a problem. The next big concern after that was the almost unbelievably high FB% he’s been giving up. And that has been an issue as he’s given up eight homers in his last seven starts.
And yet, he has a 2.10 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP with a solid enough 18% K-BB% through nine starts.
I’m not sure what to make of Abbott, but I think the correct choice is to just to default to the success he’s had and say he’s clearly a must-start guy in fantasy right now - just know that you’ll have to take a few of these 2+ HR allowed lumps along the way, just hope nobody is on base.
George Kirby had one of his best outings with 10 strikeouts and, of course, no walks. A 20.2% SwStr%, a 59.6% Strike%! Filtering down on the 2023 Individual Start Google Sheet for starts with 20%+ SwStr% and 59%+ Strike%:
A pretty rare occurrence and Kirby has done it twice now. He didn’t change anything yesterday, going 50% FF, 22% Sl, 17% SI, 6% CU, and 5% Split - that’s pretty normal, but he got a huge 24.5% SwStr% on the four-seamer. That’ll happen from time to time - it’s a good pitch - but I think Kirby is more of a 22-25% K% guy right now.
Blake Snell had seven walks and four strikeouts. Eight walks has happened just once this year (Brad Keller 5/15), and seven walks has happened seven times
Blake Snell 7/20
Michael Kopech 6/27
Luis Medina 6/25
Alek Manoah 5/15
James Kaprielian 4/14
Edward Cabrera 4/7
Jack Flaherty 4/1
Snell’s 48% Ball% was the 24th-worst of the season, but he didn’t completely crush your fantasy team (besides WHIP) because he gave up just one run.
This stuff is going to happen with Snell, if you suddenly thought he had the walk rate under control - you were fooled and you shouldn’t have been.
And then Tyler Glasnow added nine strikeouts and zero walks to his season total, bringing him to an elite 34.9% K% and a 7.9% BB% on the year. That 27.1% K-BB% puts him behind only Strider when filtering to pitchers with 8+ starts. Top five pitcher when healthy!

Hitters
Let’s take a stroll down memory lane on a few takes I had on certain players that I got absolutely rolled for.
First, on April 25th I said Bryan Reynolds “isn’t this good” after his contract extension.
Reynolds this year now has a .750 OPS. Last year he was at .807. For his career he’s at .828.
He is certainly an above-average Major League player, and I still fully support the Pirates paying him every penny of that $106.75 million dollars - it’s not my money, and I think it’s great they’re willing to pay contracts like that to keep good and popular players around.
We are 0.5 years into an eight-year deal, so obviously we’re not close to being able to judge it - but for right now, I feel vindicated.
Next, Jordan Walker during draft season. I was fully against anybody drafting him in the top 120, and he was going in the top 100 near the end of the draft season. I will pick out my worst tweet about him just for some fairness here:
We could be very charitable to me and say that I meant “relative to ADP”, but I didn’t really mean that. I really liked Schmidt and I really didn’t like Walker. Walker has out-done Schmidt, no doubt - bad take there. But Walker hasn’t come close to justifying a top-150 pick this year.
227 PA, .282/.339/.455, 9 HR, 3 SB
Classic case here of me being right about my main point (don’t take Walker where he was going), but then stretching it out to get the fun Twitter interaction and then actually making myself look stupid.
Of course, we have to hit up Elly De La Cruz! This was a big one.
Elly so far:
165 PA, 30.9% K%, 6.1% BB%, 3.8% Brl%, 55% SB Att%
I was a bit too high on the strikeouts, on the money with the walks, way too high on the barrels, but way too low on the steals. Overall though, I feel pretty good about that - the base projection showed a flawed player that would have a hill to climb before being ready to really smash in the Majors, and that’s exactly what we’ve seen materialize.
One that I can remember that I was very wrong about was me telling everybody to buy Alek Manoah after those first handful of starts.
The poll Eric posted was Manoah vs. Taj Bradley ROS. It hasn’t gone great for Bradley, but you would have benefited a ton by making that trade at the time just by virtue of getting rid of Manoah. So yes, I was very wrong about that - Manoah was for-real busted and I didn’t see it.
There are probably a lot more bad takes that I conveniently can’t remember, this is pretty much how our brains work - forget the bad and remember the good - so I’m not saying I’m some dude with a crystal ball - but I think this year has been very good evidence for following the rules about fading rookies when the crowd is really high on them.
Alright well, that was fun for me, let’s finish up the notes.
FYI the hot hitter tracker has re-appeared now since we’ve had six days since the All-Star Break!
