MLB Daily Notes - July 26th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
Yesterday I ran a contest to give away $100 if anybody correctly picked someone to homer twice. My thought process was this
This will be fun
I will gain followers and subscribers
I likely won’t actually have to give away $100
This year, a two-homer game has happened 212 times. We have had 118 days of baseball since the season began, and only 92 (43%) of those days had a two-homer performance. Add on the fact that yesterday was a 15-game slate and I figured there’s about a 50/50 chance that someone would even hit two dingers. So that set me up with a 50% chance to get off just like that, and then even if someone was going to hit two homers it was pretty unlikely someone would get the prediction right.
Yesterday, four different hitters hit two homers. That was only the 15th time all year that at least four homers hit two homers. They were
Bo Naylor
Pete Alonso
Dansby Swanson
Julio Rodriguez
Someone picked Alonso, someone picked Swanson, and now I am $100 poorer. What did I get for it?

Not worth it at all!
Thankfully, I did think to put the “multiple winners split the money” disclaimer in the tweet - or else I’d have been out $200! So congrats to the winners - I’ll probably run it back next Tuesday!
Prop bet trackers:
I added H+R+RBI to the player prop sheet. Somebody helped me figure out how to get lines directly from the DraftKings API, which is a real game-changer, so that sheet has just a ton of stuff in it now.
I will probably get a tracker up for these too, but I’m not sure the right way to go would be to just bet all the ones above 0.10 or 0.15 or something and see what happens - I’ll have to think more about that. It doesn’t exactly fit the Poisson distribution thing because you can get more than one RBI in a single event, but I won’t get into that. Anyways, the data is there and now you can all take it and go with it - I’ve had plenty of people reach out to say they’ve found ways to make money with the projections and whatnot, so good luck to you out there.
Pitchers - Yesterday
Tyler Glasnow is an ace, of course. 17.5% SwStr%, 55.7% Strike%, 8:2 K:BB - one of the best pitchers in the league.
Griffin Canning, my boy, went for an 8:0 K:BB on an 18.3% SwStr% and a 51.6% Strike%. He only made it through five innings with his 93 pitches and gave up a couple of runs on seven hits.
He does have this problem of giving up a lot of hits, at least lately. I’m not a huge HEAT MAP guy, but maybe he does have this George Kirby-esque problem where he can throw too many strikes down that aren’t located precisely.
I’m not sure how to read these charts, I haven’t looked at many of them, but it would seem that he’s catching a whole lot of the middle of the zone. His BABIP on the year is .290 - so that’s about normal. He does have a good 46% GB% too. So all in all the guy now has an 18.5% K-BB% with a 14.1% SwStr% and I think he’s really, really good - but I seem to be one of the few guys around here talking about him!
I shouldn’t say that I guess because I pretty much don’t read anything anybody else writes at this point. I’ve pretty much just disconnected myself from the other “fantasy analysts” out there, so maybe I’m wrong - tell me if I’m wrong. Tell me if I’m just sounding like everyone else! I don’t wanna do that!
Domingo German was the whiffs leader at 18 yesterday and the SwStr% leader at 19.8%. For the year now:
15.5% SwStr%
49.2% Strike%
25.8% K%
33.2% Ball%
38% GB%
That’s a strong 18% K-BB%, so he’s really been a surprise this year. The only pitchers in the league with 10+ starts, a SwStr% above 15%, and a Ball% under 35%:
Spencer Strider
Pablo Lopez
Shane McClanahan
Domingo German
Luis Castillo
Tyler Glasnow
Jesus Luzardo
George Kirby once again threw a ton of strikes, and this time he piled up 9 strikeouts on a 16.9% SwStr%. However, he gave up five earnies on seven hits. He has 19 strikeouts in his last two starts, both of those being against the Twins who lead the league in striking out by a good margin.
I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again - Kirby gives you a pretty nice WHIP floor with his elite walk rate, but he does risk giving up some extra runs with how many strikes he throws.
Kirby’s BIP Type Profile is pretty much league average in terms of the types he’s giving up:
Those percentages are all really close to the league averages. He gets a few more “topped” than normal, which is to say ground balls - but it’s not very high above the average.
And here’s how those have performed after contact is made:
Something I should dig into more at some point is whether or not certain pitchers can have some control over the barrel performance and things like that. You see there that only 37% of the barrels Kirby has allowed have gone for homers, and that’s a dozen points below the league average. Certainly, the home park plays in there, but I’ve also heard some stuff about high Stuff+ maybe seeing better barrel performance? That doesn’t make a ton of sense to me, but it’s worth looking into.
When we talk about BIP Type profile, we have to talk about Andrew Abbott! He had another great start last night with six scoreless innings and nine strikeouts. A 13.3% SwStr%, a 56.6% Strike%, a 31% Ball% - that’s all elite stuff. He did not give up a barrel! He’s gone two starts in a row now not giving up a homer, and the FB% is down to 25% in those two starts. For the year now:
10 GS
12.9% SwStr%
48.9% Strike%
35.6% Ball%
27.5% K%
8.1% BB%
8.6% Brl%
.222 BABIP
40.1% FB%
25.7% GB%
That’s still the highest FB% in the league, and you can see there that a .222 BABIP probably isn’t something that is going to stay true, but you can’t argue with the whiffs and the strikeouts. He seems to be very good, and the Reds are letting him get over 100 pitches without much concern - 113 last night to get himself that quality start.
I initially bought into him in the home league, but then dropped him after his third start because the SwStr% was at like 8%, but after his fourth start I gave him another try and I’ve been benefiting bigly from him ever since. It’ll be interesting to see where he lines up in the rankings and projections for next season (which I will be doing all offseason!)
I suppose we could say that Justin Verlander is “fixed” now.
His first 13 starts:
10.7% SwStr%
44.6% Strike%
20% K%
His last 2 starts:
15.7% SwStr%
53% Strike%
25% K%
No changes to the pitch mix recently, just seems to have gotten the command or deception back or something - or maybe this is just a fluke and he’ll go back down! Who is to say!?
Quick check on Corbin Burnes. It wasn’t great yesterday with an 11.8% SwStr% and just a 6:1 K:BB after he had looked like his former super-ace self since the break. The curveball usage went down a bit yesterday:
In his previous two starts he had a 30% and a 35% SwStr% on the curveball, but last night it was just 6%. Maybe he just couldn’t locate it as well or something like that - I don’t care to much to look further into it, but maybe we can’t say that Burnes is fully back to SP1 consideration.

Hitters
Bo Naylor with the two-barrel, two-homer day. Here’s what he’s doing this year in the Majors
77 PA
.211/.273/.423
4 HR
19.3 PA/HR
8.2% Brl%
28.6% K%
7.8% BB%
77% Contact%
.310 xwOBA
33% GB%
Getting the ball in the air a good bit, but not hitting it all that hard and striking out a lot. The 77% Contact% is good - so maybe the K% will come down. He seems just okay, but he is a catcher and does have a history of stealing some bases - so he’s an option in deep leagues right now and maybe he’ll be a guy we’ll like in two catcher leagues next year.
Speaking of catchers, Gary Sanchez also double-barreled. In his time with the Padres this year he has 10 homers in 159 PA (15.9 PA/HR) on a strong 12% Brl% and a low 22% K%. That’s a really low K% for the guy - and the 75% Contact% backs it up to some degree.
And holy cow Martin Maldonado also double-barreled, but we don’t write words about Martin Maldonado here!
The man Edouard Julien has a 32% Brl% over the last 3 weeks which is ridiculous. For the year now:
.305/.390/.545, 9 HR, 17.6% Brl%, 32% K%, 12% BB%, 69% Cont%
This profile would suggest a bit of a boom-or-bust guy just benefiting from a lot of boom lately. The contact rate and strikeout rate are bad, and he has a 49% GB% - so I would imagine there will be rough patches ahead. He would seem to be a pretty great sell-high right now in redraft leagues.
