MLB Daily Notes - July 28th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
Trade Deadline Update
Jazz Chisholm to the Yankees
This was the big one of the day. Chisholm is one of the best players on the trade market and has an extra year of control, so you’ll see Chisholm in pinstripes through the 2026 season. They gave up three prospects to get him, but I don’t have the time to look into them right now. But it’s a big boost to Jazz in the fantasy game. Presumedly, he’ll be hitting lead-off for them ahead of Soto and Judge, and that’s a fantastic place to be.
Jesse Winker to the Mets
The return here is unknown so far, but I doubt it’s very much. Solid outfield addition for the Mets, he’s slashing .260/.377/.422 this year with 11 homers and 14 steals. There’s never been a ton of raw power in Winker’s game, but the hits are falling this year after a couple of seasons with really low batting averages.
Danny Jansen to the Red Sox
This was a weak spot for the Red Sox, who add a catcher with a bunch of power. That’s a pretty good landing spot for Jansen. He’s probably still a part-time catcher, although maybe he DH’s some in Boston. I don’t think this really changes his fantasy impact.
The other news was that Kodai Senga’s season is over, a really rough development for the Mets. The one thing they could use was an ace to push them into being a real postseason contender.
Pitcher Review
Just a little 30-whiff outing from Blake Snell. By the way I count whiffs, this was only the 10th time going back to 2021 where a pitcher had 30+.
The pitch mix:
Just insane numbers on the four-seamer, curveball, and changeup. But this is the kind of stuff you’ll get when Blake Snell has command and he’s facing the Rockies. He went for 15 strikeouts in six innings and threw 103 pitches. Crazy good stuff, and Snell is probably in the top 15 or so SPs for the rest of the season.
The other big pitching performance of the day was from our boy Spencer Schwellenbach.
7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 11 K, 0 BB, 15 whiffs, 16.9% SwStr%, 56.2% Strike%
And he did that on 89 pitches. The guy has been throwing a ton of strikes ever since he debuted, and the whiffs have been there more often than not. We see the ceiling of that kind of approach here. When you’re landing strikes with good stuff and the hitters aren’t getting any kind of good fortune when they’re putting the ball in play, there’s going to be some gorgeous box score lines.
He’s now at 103 innings on the year and he threw just 65 last year, so I’m not sure how long they can push him. But the way he’s pitching, you’d think they’d want him to be a part of their potential playoff rotation or bullpen.
Hayden Birdsong also faced the Rockies in that double-header and did very well:
5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 8 K, 3 BB, 18.9% SwStr%, 52.8% Strike%
The efficiency wasn’t there, using 106 pitches to get 15 outs, but he didn’t give up anything hard hit or any runs.
The four-seamer was good yesterday, but that’s been a problem for him on the year (8.1% SwStr%, 42% Strike%). If that pitch is improving, we could be in business, but I don’t think it’s going to happen for him this year. Two good starts in a row against the Rockies now have brought his ERA down to 2.97 and his K% up to 30%, but prior to these two soft matchups, it was just a 21% K%.
The Max Meyer return was deflating for those of you who might have waited all that time.
4 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 K, 2 BB, 4 whiffs, 4.7% SwStr%, 50.6% Strike%
He’s now thrown 338 pitches to Major League hitters with a 13.3% SwStr%, 44% Strike%, 38% Ball%, and 50% GB%. Not all that impressive numbers, but we need to see more. The fastball velocity is fine but nothing special, and the slider looks pretty good overall (46% Strike%, 18.1% SwStr%). There’s a ton of potential here, but it’s really hard to know what to expect here early on. The next question is how will the Marlins really use him over these next two months? He’s at 79 innings of the year after missing all of last season. You wouldn’t think he’s going much over 100. I don’t think he needs to be owned in 10 or 12-team fantasy leagues.
Lots more to talk about, but I just don’t have the time for it. Driving back home to Indiana here shortly, so we’ll get a lot of stuff out tomorrow.
Hitter Review
Tyler Fitzgerald is on quite a run. He’s homered eight times in his last nine games. He’s now slashing .324/.390/.658 on the year with nine homers, 25 runs, 19 RBI, and seven steals in just 123 PAs. Incredible start.
He has a 12% Brl% on a 29% K% (69% Contact%), so he would seem to be one of those guys swinging big and hoping for the best. That can result in these torrid stretches, but it also will eventually result in a slump as the strikeouts bunch together. The 35% hard-hit rate is also unimpressive, and not what your expect from a guy with nine homers this fast.
His 90th percentile EV to this point is 102.7, which is a really low number. The hardest he’s hit a ball is 107. None of this would predict anything like what we’ve see so far, so I think this 12% Brl% is going to disappear pretty quickly, and given the strikeout issue - that will make him useless for fantasy purposes. I would try to move off of him, and I wouldn’t be spending much money on him in a FAAB situation.
This is all pretty similar to what his teammate Heliot Ramos did this year. He was a relative unknown and then came into the Giants lineup and started hitting dongs.
To my surprise, Ramos has stayed pretty good all year long. The season line is now .292/.353/.509 with 15 homers (20.3 PA/HR) and a 26.5% K%. The key is that last part - he has lowered his K% as the season has gone on (24% over his last 150 PAs - about half of his season). He also has a 108.1 90th-percentile EV, so there’s real power there with Ramos, while it’s much less sure with Fitzgerald.
I’ve gotta get moving, enjoy your Sundays!
