Three thousand strikeouts for the great Clayton Kershaw. One of the best to ever do it. My main memories of Kershaw were around 2015-2016 when I was first getting into MLB DFS. I swear he was priced at $14,000 a few times, which is insane. He was so, so good. He pretty much limped over the finish line there, getting exactly the three strikeouts he needed to get to 3K, giving up four runs on hits hits to the White Sox along the way.
Greatness fades away, and Kershaw is a shell of his former self right now with a 17.5% K% on the year. His fastball sits at 89 and has a 1.2% SwStr% with a .355 xwOBA allowed. He’s fully reliant on that slider (16.5% SwStr%) at this point, but even that pitch has gotten crushed this year (.547 SLG, .366 xwOBA). I don’t think Kershaw is a guy the Dodgers will be hoping to have on the mound in the postseason. It’s always a little unfortunate for a Hall of Fame career to end that way, but I can understand that retiring at the top of your game is a really dumb idea. Why would anyone do that. Soak it up, baby. Kershaw is probably still a net positive for the Dodgers with jersey sales and people coming to the games just to see him and whatnot. It’s also nice for a guy to spend his whole career with one team. Kershaw has always been outspoken about his faith, and obivously you know that I like that a lot. So shoutout to him
Speaking of faith, we’ve lost faith in Will Warren. Or maybe we should have never had it. At least I kind of saw that trainwreck coming. I figured he wouldn’t do much in the strikeout department against the Blue Jays. I guess I didn’t expect him to put a snowman in the earned run column.
4 IP, 10 H, 8 ER, 4 SO, 4 BB, 7.1% SwStr%
This was his second time below zero this year.
He’s given up 15 of his 47 earned runs in those two starts. His JA ERA went from 2.93 to 3.09 last night. But that’s still pretty good and I’ll still probably continue to start him. He’ll get the Mariners and Cubs next, so I wouldn’t blame anybody for dropping him either. Those are pretty tough matchups, and we have seen several times now how bad this guy can be.
Someone on X told me they started Warren, Chase Burns, and Jacob Misiorowski this week. So that’s hilarious. J-Mizz failed the hardest test of his season against the Mets.
3.2 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 2 SO, 3 BB, 2 HR
The pristine command disappeared and he gave up a pretty untimely home run to Brandon Nimmo (in the form of a grand slam). His fastball velo came down to 98, which is a funny thing to say, but it’s true! And he had his first 40% Ball% of the year, which is about what I expected from the beginning.
You’ll just continue to start the guy, it’s probable that he’ll have more good starts than bad ones. But that’s no guarantee since we can’t shake this history of high walk rates on him.
It also seems like, at this point, that anybody throwing 98+ consistently has a ticking time bomb strapped to their elbow. Spencer Schwellenbach is gone for multiple months now after he fractured his elbow, and he himself said it might have come from ramping up the velo.
What do we do about that? I don’t know. I guess it’s a pretty good idea to avoid paying the premium price tag on high-velo starters for fantasy purposes in the future. At the same time, you’re pretty happy with the half season Schwelly gave you, and maybe you’ve picked up some very strong backup plans for him over that same time period. I’m not sure there’s a correct answer to it.
It will have me more and more avoiding SPs in the first few rounds though. Although of course there are exceptions. My best NFBC team right now is the one I grabbed Skubal (in the second round) for.
MacKenzie Gore threw 111 pitcehs and struck out two. I didn’t think that was possible! Just ten whiffs on those 111 pitches for a 9% SwStr%, his lowest of the year. I wouldn’t take anything from it. H’es been elite all year and the JA ERA sits at 2.81 for the season.
Dylan Cease had his lowest SwStr% of the season at 9.7%. He gave up four earned runs in six innings against the Reds and struck out just four. So it’s another good day to make some offers to buy low on Cease!
Ryan Pepiot came out and struck out nine more hitters. He had a weird one-strikeout start the time before that against the O’s, but other than that he’s been on a nice roll. Since June began:
6 GS, 34.4% K%, 9.9% BB%, 24.4% K-BB%, 15.8% SwStr%, 34.1% Ball%
That’s a 2.38 JA ERA. And that K-BB% is sixth-best in the league since 6/1.
K-BB% Leaders since June 1st

I’ve gotta get moving on some other stuff, but here, I’ll give you a standout pitcher and a standout hitter to consider adding in your fantasy leagues. I’m shooting for guys that are available in most leagues.
Pitcher: Sean Burke
He threw six strong innings against the Dodgers last night and now has three great outings in a row.
That’s a 1.10 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP, a 27.5% K%, and a 7.2% BB%. He has really cleaned up the walk rate. After going for a 17% K% and an 11.7% BB% in March-May, he’s at a 24.1% K% and a 6.0% BB% in June and July.
Remember that he’s a young guy. This is his rookie year. He has a mid-90s fastball that now has a 13.9% SwStr% since June 1st, and he has a nice curveball behind it (56% Strike% since June). The rest of his stuff is mediocre, but he does have pitches to mix in (slider 19%, changeup 9%, sinker 5%). He’s looking better!
The hitter is Tyler Freeman. He’s probably already owned in very competitive leagues, but he’s the guy. His season has been very impressive.
148 PA, .323/.412/.427, 8.8% K%, 10.1% BB%, .300 xBA, .365 xwOBA
He has just one homer on a 3.5% Brl%. But there might be some more homers than that once you see his strong 105.4 EV90. I think he could hit a couple dingers a month, and he makes a stupid amount of contact with a 96% Zone Contact%. Add on the nice walk rate and the patient approach, and you have yourself a pretty darn good hitter in points leagues. He also has 11 steals on a very high 25% attempt rate.
So there you go! Have a good Thursday, and I’ll talk to you against on INDEPENDENCE DAY!
