MLB Daily Notes - July 5th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
.
Colton Cowser is getting the call for Baltimore, and that’s pretty big news.
So he doesn’t swing very much at all. That keeps the walk rate up, but the K% could be a problem for him in the Majors, to begin with at least. The contact rate isn’t very good, especially again minor league pitching. If he keeps swinging at that rate, he’s going to take a lot of strikes.
One recent prospect call-up who is suddenly hitting the ball extremely well is Nick Gonzales. He’s slashing .314/.359/.629 with 2 homers, a 7.4% Brl%, a 23% K%, and a 5% BB%. There’s plenty of bad news here with a 61% Contact% and a 56% GB%. So the .988 OPS is pretty misleading, bummer.
Elly De La Cruz crossed the 100 PA mark, so we can take a look at him again.

The OPS is at .839 - and that does feel a little too high. That K%, Brl%, and GB% trio are really bad numbers - he has to change that to keep up good production. His .266 xwOBA is very low, and that’s mostly because of all of the ground balls he’s hit.
The best SP outing of the last weekend may have been Joe Musgrove yesterday with a 25% SwStr% and a 56% Strike%. That’s pretty out of character for Joe, he’s really not usually much of a whiffs guy, but it was good to see him have a big outing there. It came against the Angels, who are without Mike Trout for a couple of months or more now, so I wonder if the Angels won’t end up being a very good matchup for pitchers down the stretch. Sad stuff.
One other thing before I finish up, if Tarik Skubal is available in your league you should change that. He threw four innings yesterday and looked great.
