MLB Daily Notes - July 6th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
The notes are late today because I wanted to actually write stuff but then I kept getting interrupted by work and meetings and my bladder and stuff (I house like 60 ounces of water+coffee before 9am most mornings). But here they are, and there’s some extra stuff in here, including some jokes that I think are funny but nobody else probably will.
I’m in a weird mood today. But look, shout out to me, I made the all-star team in that men’s baseball league I’ve talked about a few times. Turns out being 30+ and still quite light on your feet goes a long way to being better at sports than most other people. This isn’t bragging either because I’m saying it’s not. And of course, I’ve been keeping my own stats. You think I’m going to keep stats on hundreds of pro ball players but not keep stats on myself? You’re nuts.
If I give myself a hit for every hit/error decision, your boy is slashing .615/.643/.615 with a steal in 14 PA. That’s eight hits, all singles baby. And only 4 of them made it out of the infield. Highly encourage and expect at least half of my readers to be at the game next Saturday with my jersey on. I wear #2. See ya there.
Pitchers - Yesterday
It was a Pablo Lopez day! 10:1 K:BB, a complete game against the Royals. 58% Strike%, 24% Ball! That’s how you do a complete game I guess, just don’t waste time throwing balls. That 24% Ball% was the 27th-lowest of the season (out of 2,393 qualified starts). Elite stuff from Pablo who has been dazzling this year
51.9% Strike%
15.7% SwStr%
31.9% Ball%
30.4% K%
6.4% BB%
23.9% K-BB%
40% GB%
Ace-like stuff there.
Seth Lugo had a nice outing of his own with 18 whiffs and an 18.2% SwStr%. He held Ohtani hitless, and that is going to go a looong way now with Trout on the shelf. That Angels lineup is pretty brutal after those top two, so I think we can stream against them now.
Kodai Senga proved himself with 11 strikeouts against a D’Backs lineup that is not easy to strike out, and he walked just one. However, the walk problems haven’t been improving for him as he sits with a 12.3% BB% on the year and a 10.9% mark since June began. If we look at pitchers with 10 starts and a double-digit walk rate, most of them are really bad pitchers, with the exceptions being:
Shohei Ohtani
Blake Snell
And then less so:
MacKenzie Gore
Jack Flaherty
Michael Kopech
Edward Cabrera
Josiah Gray
So you can survive a high walk rate, but you absolutely need a high strikeout rate to go with it, but Senga has that going with his 29.3% K% on the year and a supportive 13.1% SwStr%.
Dean Kremer also had a spike game with a 51.5% Strike%, a 17.5% SwStr%, and a 10:1 K:BB. His season numbers:
45.3% Strike%
11.7% SwStr%
36.7% Ball%
22% K%
6% BB%
Those aren’t very good numbers, but he’s been a bit better since June began:
46.9% Strike%
12.6% SwStr%
36.3% Ball%
26.7% K%
4.8% BB%
Pitch mix:
I’m not really buying into him, but he’s a useful streamer against bad lineups.

Pitcher/Pitch Trends
I’m not much of an artsy fartsy kinda guy, I’m probably one of the more analytical people in the world, and that takes away from a sense of beauty and appreciation for art, but I am pretty confident in saying that modern art sucks. Pretty much everything modern sucks in my view. There are a lot of things I think we did better in like 1950 than now, medicine & honoring God-given individual rights aside, but yeah - the art blows. I say that because I think a lot of the pink-haired modernists would want to hang Josiah Gray’s pitch mix trend in the freaking Louvre.
It’s just so gross. But I guess it’s better to have 6 broken tools than one.
The other J-Gray threw a couple of sweepers yesterday, which was new. It’s possible that was just a classification mistake rather than an actual new and different pitch, but people love when pitchers throw new pitches so I’m going to run with that shit.
He sucked yesterday, by the way.
Kodai Senga threw more cutters than four-seamers yesterday, and that was a first for him.
and Bryan Bello embraced the sinker yesterday!
Seven more strong innings, this time against a brutal Rangers lineup. He gave up three hits to Corey Seager but survived it - well done despite a lackluster 11.2% SwStr%, 42.1% Strike%, and just a 3:0 K:BB.
But there’s probably something to just cutting your losses against an elite lineup like the Rangers and just trying to keep the ball out of the air and hope for the best. If he threw a bunch of four-seamers and sliders he’d be elevating the risk of some real damage being done with the long-ball. Bello’s over-performing by the numbers (3.04 ERA, 3.94 xFIP), but he has such a great mix of pitches that it’s hard to think that he can’t do that reliably. Just so many ways for that guy to approach a hitter, it’s beautiful - he might be my favorite pitcher in the league besides my long-time childhood friend Tyler Glasnow, who I’ve never met.

Hitters
Jack Suwinski is on one again. 21.2% Brl% and a 17 PA/HR since June 15th. For the year:
.234/.365/.519, 19 HR, 19.2% Brl%, 30.9% K%, 16.0% BB%
That’s an .885 OPS, I love him. Might even start referring to him as a close personal friend like I do Glasnow.
I’m not a feelings guy, but I have a feeling that Willy Adames is about to rocket launch off. Season totals:
.208/.390/.384, 13 HR, 12.5% Brl%, 25.7% K%, 38% GB%
Sine 6/1:
.212/.291/.385, 4 HR, 9.3% Brl%, 25.6% K%, 29% GB%
So yeah he’s been worse lately, I didn’t expect that - that should teach us a hard lesson about trusting our feelings. Feelings are dumb.
