MLB Daily Notes - July 6th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
I am writing these notes from my beautiful backyard, so obviously you have to see it.
This is the first time I’ve written out here, and I have no idea why. Actually, I do know why - because I have three kids.
Pitcher Review
Cole Ragans put up 22 whiffs in Coors and got through seven innings. Ho-hum.
Aaron Nola also went whiff-crazy with 21 of them. That is uncommon for him these days. He’s now at an 18.2% K-BB% with a 3.56 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP. Another very solid season for him, even though the strikeout rate has been dissipating over these last couple of seasons.
Kevin Gausman exploited the Mariners for ten strikeouts. A 54.8% Strike% and 21 whiffs of his own. Good to see, but only partial credit because everybody has been doing this to the Mariners.
Reese Olson was fourth on the day with 16 whiffs. That’s 17 strikeouts in his last two starts and a 30.4% K% over his last four. He now has his season SwStr% up to 13.5%. He’s hid that four-seamer a bit more lately, and it’s paid off. Prior to these last four, he threw it 24% of the time. Since then it’s 20%. His slider has the fourth-best SwStr% in the league at 21.3% (Jones, Cease, Glasnow). His changeup has the third-best mark at 22.4% (Skubal, Ragans). If he can do anything good at all with the two fastball variations, he has very good starts. Thems the rules.
Drew Thorpe got deep. 6.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 5 K, 2 BB. Good line there. Still a horrible 37.8% Strike% and 43.3% Ball%. More balls than strikes but somehow kept runners off base. Pretty amazing work (read: lucky). He’s probably not someone you can trade for any kind of return, but if you can, I’d do it. A 40% Strike% on 430 pitches is a real problem. Every pitch except the changeup has been just terrible at earning strikes, and you can’t survive like that. The changeup must have something to change up #TCMHSTCU.
I wanted to integrate strikeout ceilings into my projections. I had the idea at Costsco yesterday. What I would do is this:
Take the strikeout projection from my model
Take each pitcher’s variance (measured by the standard deviation of strikeouts) and add that to the mix to calculate the ceiling (add two standard deviations to the projection to get the ceiling).
This would only make sense if variation was sticky. Meaning, if a pitcher has high variance in their strikeouts one year, does that mean they are more likely to do that again next year?
So I checked, and no, there’s no stickiness to it at all. We’d be much better off just using average variance. But if I use average variance, then I would be adding the same number to everybody's projection, and then it would just be a duplicate of the projections as far as sorting goes. So it turned out to be a dumb idea, I’ll try again next time I go to Costco.
Hitter Review
There were a bunch of homers hit yesterday. The fourth-most of any single day.
June 22: 48
June 16: 44
May 24: 44
July 5: 43
I’m working on a course teaching Excel with baseball data. So here’s a teaser of that.
If we have data that looks like this (one line for every player for every day and the number of homers they hit that day):
We can run pivot table to see how many homers were each day:
Sort it by the “Sum of HR” column:
And then you can easily slap a plot together to show it:
Some cleaning on that would be needed to make it ready to share out, the dates are hard to read, but it’s that quick and easy if you have the right data.
You can then add the batter names in there to see how the 43 came to be:
So 11 of those 43 came from five different players. Thre rare three-dong day came from Will Smith, and then two pretty interesting names here in Colt Keith and Rowdy Tellez.
Colt Keith
Keith was one of the Tigers’ top prospects coming into the season. He signed an extension in the spring, and that cleared his way to be their Opening Day third baseman. He has struggled for most of the year, but has recently looked quite good.
Season:
.240/.282/.361, .643 OPS, 7 HR, 8.0% Brl%, 18% K%
First Half:
.197/.254/.220, .474 OPS, 0 HR, 7.6% Brl%, 16.7 K%
Second Half:
.279/.310/.493, .803 OPS, 7 HR, 8.3% Brl%, 19.7% K%
Not a ton of movement in barrels and strikeouts, but the slugging has shot up through the roof.
He has been lowering the ground ball rate as the season has gone on:
And now that’s down to 43%, but that started changing in early May - it’s not really a new thing. Since June began, he has a 41% GB%, a 25% LD%, and a 31% FB%.
His average exit velo on FB/LD by month:
April: 88.6
May: 88.7
Jun-July: 86.9
So there’s really nothing we can point to as a driver for the big change in slugging.
There was bad luck early on, and then a lot of good luck in late May:
Not everything is explainable, even when you really want it to be. Most people will look at this stuff and conclude that Keith has adjusted to Major League pitching and now is better. I’m not so sure that’s the case. It’s more possible than you want to believe that the hot stretch here is just good luck and he’ll go back to being pretty mediocre.
His full-season numbers aren’t very interesting. The names he’s most similar to:
The fact that he’s not a big base-stealer for me would keep him off my team in a 12-teamer or shallower.
The other guy here is Rowdy Tellez. The Pirates went bananas with seven homers. That was tied for their most in a single game since 2021; they also homered seven times on May 26th, 2023.
There have only been sixteen instances since 2021 of a team hitting at least seven homers, here they are:
Something in the Gatorade last night or something. Can’t wait for them to lose 6-0 tonight!
Pirate fans were wanting the dude cut before June, and he certainly wasn’t on any fantasy teams, but he has been excellent for more than a month now.
Since June 1st:
.367/.412/.671, 1.083 OPS, 6 HR, 12.7% Brl%, 19% K%, .388 xwOBA
He’s freaking fifth in the league in OPS since then, it’s nuts.
His BABIP is through the roof at .404. But his expected batting average since 6/1 is .324, still a fantastic number. His 30% LD% is one of the higher numbers in the league, and that is how you rack up a high batting average.
I’m still short of calling him a must-add in a standard league. He sits against lefties (he’s faced just 25 of them all year), the steals aren’t there, and he hasn’t been homering a ton over this hot stretch. But in a deep league, yeah.
It’s also freaking nice for a Pirate player to do better than you expect for once.
Jose Miranda kept piling on last night with four hits and a homer. That’s nine hits and 16 total bases in his last two games. You saw him in the OPS leaders since June 1st above with that elite .388/.430/.641 line.
You might remember Miranda from the 2022 season. He was pretty good in the Majors after arriving:
488 PA, .747 OPS, 15 HR
But he struggled in 2023 (.566 OPS) and got sent down to the minors, and that’s where he’s spent a third of his time since 2023.
He’s been a better hitter in these Majors now than in AAA, so that’s a red flag:
This wild run won’t continue, but maybe he can be a solid enough contributor in the middle of a decent lineup.
There you have it, I’m off!
