Yesterday was quite a day on the pitching side. There were 280 strikeouts, the third-most in a single day this season and the second-most strikeouts per game.
Let’s go down the list and examine some pitchers!
I had the misfortune of lining up against Zack Wheeler in the home league this week. He would seem to be a front-runner for the NL Cy Young, and he made his case a lot stronger for that award this week with 17 innings, one run allowed, and a 22:0 K:BB. He’s at a 2.25 ERA with a 0.85 WHIP and a 27.9% K-BB% on the season now. Stone cold ace. And it’s weird that we alerady know he’s retiring after the 2027 season. So he only has 2.5 years left! I imagine there will be a pretty serious fall off in skill between now and the time he’s knocking on the door of being 38, but at the same time it seems pretty likely that he’ll still be a very capable MLB pitcher when that retirement date hits.
But there’s more to life than your career, and Wheeler seems to get that. He’s made a terrific career for himself after struggling with health so much in his early years. He truly didn’t break out until he was around 30 years old. Just imagine what he could have done if he were healthy the whole time! Although that’s pretty much a pipe dream at this point. And who knows, maybe the Mets truly are cursed and maybe he never would have done anything good with them had he stayed.
Uh-oh! The Pirates are pulling the reins on their horse!
I suppose that shouldn’t be surprising. Why let the guy rip off 3,100 pitches this year when the extras aren’t doing you any good. It doesn’t hurt for fantasy too bad unless you’re in a quality starts league. That limitation cost him a qualdaddy yesterday, and it might have cost him one in the previous start. It also slightly decreases his chance of getting wins, since the reliever that is taking the extra inning from him is always worse than him. So that sucks for you Skenes owners, but it doesn’t bother me because I never drafted Skenes aha hhah hah!
Tarik Skubal, what more is there to say? He’s at 116 innings for the year and there’s no slowing him down. The Tigers are heading for the playoffs, so it’s going to be another massive workload for Skubal. But this is what you pay the guys for. They’re employed to throw the ball, let them throw the ball!
Matt Boyd has proven to be a fantastic signing for the first-place Cubs. He now has a 2.52 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP on a 17.7% K-BB% and a 3.24 JA ERA. There’s been some good luck (11% HR/FB on a high 30% FB%), but the guy can pitch. He’s not the young stud pitcher that the Cubs will want to go out of their way to preserve, but it’s still worth noting that he threw just 59 innings last year, and he’s at 104 already this year. He’s clearly a guy they’ll want in their playoff rotation (although we’ll see what they do at the deadline), so we could see them taking some precautions to make sure they can get to October with his arm still working.
Kevin Gausman took advantage of the Angels matchup to put another spike upward on his crazy season game log.
He did give up seven hits and walked three, so the WHIP was pretty tragic, but you’ll take the nine punchies.
George Kirby had his second-best start of the year, this time exploiting the Pirates (who did not score a single run in their three-game set in Seattle). He went for a 20.4% SwStr% and a 29% Ball%. That’s about as good as you can do it. The slider and fastball were both just insanely good; the Pirates didn’t have much of a chance. It’s still been mixed results from Kirby. His last five starts:
22.5% K%, 4.5% BB%, 11.7% SwStr%, 32.4% Ball%, 3.21 JA ERA
The last two have been special with a 14:0 K:BB, an 18% SwStr%, and a 29.2% Ball%. Maybe he’ll just take off and be an SP1 the rest of the way, but I can’t say anything about him with full confidence right now.
Three very interesting arms here.
Jacob Lopez didn’t do much right except for the 8:1 K:BB. He gave up five hits and four earned runs in 4.1 innings, giving up another homer. We knew those homers were coming, this guy is a heavy fly-ball pitcher in a small ballpark, and now a long ball has cost him a chance at a good pitching line in each of his last two. But he did have the whiff going yesterday (17% SwStr%). He has at least 15 whiffs in four of his last seven starts. He could continue to be good for strikeouts, but he’s going to have a high HR/9, I don’t see much way around that. The guy has a tiny 23.7% GB%. That’s the lowest in the league by a mile.
Imanga isn’t a bad comp for the guy. Deceptive lefty with low velocity and a high FB%, but still the ability to get whiffs. I don’t think Lopez’s command is in the same conversation as Imanaga, but everything else is pretty similar.
Gavin Williams did some of his best work against the Tigers. Six scoreless innings on one hit and three walks with the eight strikeouts. He’s had major issues witht eh command. He’s walked at least two in nine straight starts and has a 13.1% BB% on the year. That’s a huge issue and it seriously holds him back. His WHIP is disastrous at 1.41. I don’t think it’s a good idea to be starting Williams in fantasy leagues until he can seriously improve the command, which might never happen.
But the story of the day was probably the return of Brandon Woodruff. Yesterday was his first MLB start since September 23, 2023. And it was a good one
6 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 8 SO, 0 BB, 114.3% SwStr%, 58.6% Strike%, 24.3% Ball%
Coming back with a bang! That is a ton of strikes. A 24.3% Ball% is really rare to see. That was the 14th-lowest Ball% from a starter over 65 pitches of the entire season.
The fastball is not what it used to be. He was a 95-96mph guy before all of these injuries, and now he’s sitting around 93. It worked just fine yesterday, though. And the sinker/cutter combination is still there to mix in with it.
He didn’t show much confidence in anything but the fastball variations yesterday. He was just out there throwing as many pitches in the zone as possible while trying to keep guys off balance with the four-seamer, sinker, cutter trio. It worked great. I can’t say it will continue to work great, but we have to wait and see!
It was a decent bounce-back outing from Burns in a losing effort. He only lasted 4.2 innings on his 91 pitches and the ball rate was horrible at 42.9%. No efficiency there whatsoever, but he put up 13 whiffs for a 14.3% SwStr% and didn’t allow a homer, so you’ll take that after that really horrible second start to his career.
But we’re seeing what we should have expected, rookie inconsistencies. There’s quite a learning curve going from AAA to MLB. Raw stuff won’t get guys out at this level. The overall numbers in his three starts:
30.6% K%, 12.2% BB%, 12.7% SwStr%, 38% Ball%, 3.06 JA ERA
Not bad, but he clearly needs to improve the command. If he’s going to be 90% four-seamer and slider, they have to both be located well. He won’t be fooling many guys with what pitch he’s throwing. Here’s how he’s splitting it up:
He hasn’t thrown anything but a four-seamer or slider to righties, and he only has 12% usage of the changeup against lefties. We’ll see this change as we move forward. It’s good to see that he at least knows how to throw a changeup. That seems like the keystone pitch for him to really develop into an ace.
The Rays sneakily called up Joe Boyle on Sunday morning and put him right into the game, following two innings from Drew Rasmussen. He threw 95 pitches, so it was treated like a traditional start for the big man. And it went really well.
If he can throw this fastball in the strikezone, he’ll be fine. He has huge velo and good extension. The 34% Ball% is good to see there, and even on just those 58 pitches you can get a hint of how tough it is to hit (.267 xwOBA).
It looks like the Rays will do this same thing with Rasmussen and Boyle in the short term. That makes Rasmussen a clear drop in fantasy leagues. Two to three innings as an opener can’t help your fantasy team nearly as much as it can hurt it. But it does make Boyle a guy you want to start. He’ll have plenty of win opportunities being the pitcher of record pretty much every time.
It’s pretty amazing that the Rays were able to fix (or at least vastly improve) the guys walk rate immediately. Are they really just that much better at this stuff than the Athletics?
Joe Boyle Minor League BB% by Year
2022: 20%
2023: 17.8%
2024: 19.8%
2025: 10.6%
In my head, I just imagine Joe Boyle coming into Rays camp in February and someone being like “hey you know there’s this imaginary box above home plate right?”. And his mind being blown.
Trevor Rogers is an interesting case. He’s been pitching great for the Orioles, and I cannot say I saw that coming.
A 1.57 ERA and a 0.87 WHIP oh boy!
But you should immediately be skeptical after seeing the 14.5% K-BB%. It’s just a 3.57 JA ERA for the guy (3.90 SIERA).
He has been the beneficiary of a .211 BABIP and a 10% HR/FB. The 47% GB% is good, but nothing super special. He’s been hit hard (53% hard hit rate), but nothing has really hurt him so far. I think there are many worse starts ahead of him. I wouldn’t break the bank on the guy. But he can be considered a decent streaming option, I suppose!
To take a look at the pitch mix:
He’s been dominant with the four-seamer. A 16.1% SwStr% is really, really high. That’s not something he’s going to sustain, but it’s still a good sign that guys are having trouble picking it up. The real red flag there is just the single homer allowed on the pitch along with that 48% FB%.
I’m not convinced at all by Rogers.
A couple other guys to hit before we wrap this up.
Emmet Sheehan returned to the Majors and made a start for the Dodgers. It went pretty well.
5 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 4 SO, 1 BB
That makes for nine innings in the Majors this year with a 27.8% K% and a 2.8% BB%. The pitch mix:
Pretty strong signs across the board, but hard to judge from just 145 pitches. I think he’s pretty close to a must-own guy right now, given the state of the position.
A few standout hitters to cover. People keep asking me about Mickey Moniak. He’s having a decent time with the Rockies. It seems like this guy gets into the conversation every year. What I remember about Moniak is that he’s a talented guy with power and speed, but just swings at everything and whiffs a ton. So, let’s see if he’s the same guy this year.
The 54% Swing% is high, but it’s not insanely high. Same with the 81.5% Z-Contact, not good but not completely awful. So he’s made some improvemetns. The K% is 24.5% in 233 PAs, and that’s a big enough sample where you can start believing in it.
So yeah, it looks like Moniak is a better hitter this year than in the past.
The GB% is nice at 36%, the EV90 is fine at 105.5, and you can see the nice 12.3% Brl% that results from it.
He has a .958 OPS at home and .692 on the road (.221/.250/.442 on the road with a 26% K%). He’s been a bit of a Coors merchant, you could say.
I still foresee this all going south in a hurry. You almost never see a guy be as bad Moniak has been for as long as he has been and then just suddenly figure it out (especially on the Rockies). But there are enough good signs here to give him an add if you’re hurting in the outfield. However the Rockies don’t play another home game until after the All Star break, so I guess you shoulds wait on that.
One other wild name popping up in the notes below is Heriberto Hernandez. He double-barreled yesterday with his third homer. He’s a 25 year old Marlins outfielder, and he’s made a splash in his 70 PAs since getting called up.
.328/.371/.531, 27% K%, 7.1% BB%, .289 xBA, .366 xwOBA
It looks like this guy is going to strike out a ton. He has just a 69% Z-Contact%, which is egregiously awful. He had a 35% K% in AAA, so yeah. He’s easy to dismiss.
That will have to wrap it up for today’s daily notes. Back later with a look at some of the action coming tonight!
